Nappy not changed for 7.5 hours

Hyperquiet · 22/04/2025 19:23

So i changed my 1 yo at 7.30 am and he went to nursery just after 8 am. He had a long day and we picked him up after 5.30 pm.

From the number of nappies used in the bag, the nappy logs on the app and the fact that he leaked wee through his clothes when they changed his soiled nappy around 3 PM tells me they didnt change him at all in the morning.

So from when he was dropped off he wasn't changed for about 7 hours.

What do you think of this and how would you handle it?

I wouldn’t say anything after one occasion. I think nursery staff need to know you trust them and their judgement. Maybe they’d checked him earlier and he was dry, & then they were distracted with all the children yada yada… loads of things happen. If it happened a few times I’d definitely be asking them about it, but just once… no. I wouldn’t be bringing it up yet.

Taytayslayslay · 22/04/2025 20:17

Would be easy enough to check because the times will be different. For example, say 3 babies are changed at 10am, 10:05&10:10am, then again at 1pm, 1:05 & 1:10. It'll be in order on the sheet.

That makes sense. Thanks.

It never ceases to amaze me how rude people are (jk it's mumsnet I expect this).

Also I try and be as measured as possible before jumping onto things so I find getting the advice of others helps me balance my view better. Also my child has only been at nursery just over a month so this is all new to me.

Anything else?

There are constructive and friendly ways of discussing it. And theres jumping down their throats way.

For example - a gentle angle to start with might be, ‘I notice that little Freddie leaked through a nappy yesterday, and looks like might have been on for a while. Do you think that was a one off, or do we need to think about different nappies / different size switching up routine of nappy changes and naps?’

(size 7 nappies are massive, filling one of those takes quite some doing. Shooting round the side is pretty easy to do).

LuluDelulu · 22/04/2025 20:34

I’d definitely be asking the nursery about this.

Thanks. He is a big boy and he doesnt tend to leak since we moved to this size!

Our nursery changes them 3 hrly. If on the odd occasion dc is "dry" it gets recorded on the app and changed regardless with the time stated. On a 9/10 hr nursery day dc is changed 4 times on average. If cream is applied that gets noted as well. I'd be following up on this

Fupoffyagrasshole · 22/04/2025 20:39

Yes at my nursery (where I work) someone is on morning nappies, someone is on afternoon nappies and someone on evening!

so mid morning each child is taken in one by one for a nappy change

then again just before nap after lunch

and then after nap

and again after tea

and then obviously more if it’s needed.

very unusual that this would this not happen because someone is scheduled on for that to basically be their only job for a set amount of time!

so if this is happening regularly they aren’t very organised

My 3.5 yr old wears age 5 clothes and size 6+ nappies overnight.

I imagine that with the specific way of fitting the bigger size will avoid leaks, but fitted like one of the normal size for his size and it’ll sag round the legs pretty quickly.

So it is a pull up. Trust me I know what fits him. He is a bigger child! All children are built differently. I know it is unusual though. I'm not so concerned about the leak it is more the lack of changing and I brought up the leak as one of the telling signs.

The key worker was off today. It is easter hols and there are much fewer babies so I am surprised it happened. But at the same time I feel there must have been a lack of organisation.

I worked in a nursery - babies should be changed (I believe?) 3 hourly and there's a sheet that must be filled in to say who changed them & what time. Usually at the end of the day (or week I really can't remember) they get put in a locked folder for the nurseries record. Ask to see it at drop off tomorrow and don't allow the staff anytime to add any extra changes to the sheet.

Im sorry, but this is nonsense.
Each nursery will.have it's own policy and way of doing things.
Not all of them will write on paper and lock it away. In fact, in my 20 years experience of working in nursery settings, none have done this.
Most these days will use an app.

Please do ask the manager, as this time between changes is totally unacceptable, but dont go in asking to see a piece of paper because someone on mumsnet has told you it must exist.

Nonsense when that's the policy MY nursery followed? Get a grip. I'm just saying that's how we did it.

I won't assume there is one but will ask if there is a sheet thanks

Also bear in mind that if they do indeed have a sheet of paper they might not be able to show you it anyway. It will have a list of children's names on, if it even exists, and there might be gdpr / safeguarding reasons that they can't show you. I really think you need a conversation first. I mean, I don't know about anyone else, but there have been occasions where my child has had a nappy on that has leaked whilst been in my care... It happens, he was changed and dry when you picked him up? They had noticed and dealt with the issue.

That's true with the names.

So the issue wasnt the leak it is that it wasnt changed in over 7 hours.

Hi all just to update they've said they did do an extra one in the morning and forgot to log it.

Even though it may not add up fully I dont want to cause a big drama but if it happens again I will not be letting it go so easily.

The responses have been interesting varied from leave the nursery to who cares. I think I will see how it goes.

So my child is in size 7 nappies in the baby room so there are defo no other babies in that size

Then I'd ask the manager to check the nappy changing log, I'm assuming all nurseries have these.

Sorry didn't see your update. Glad you got an answer.

WorthyOtter · 23/04/2025 11:26

I would confront them about it. My nursery changes them every 3 hours unless they've done a poo

Tumbleweed101 · 24/04/2025 08:56

He should definitely have been changed more, so keep an eye on it. If they had different staff this week perhaps that is why the online log wasn’t updated but I’d be surprised if they didn’t have paper records too.

Pull ups tend to leak more as the legs aren’t so adjustable and they shift about easier, especially combined with a big wee.

Hyperquiet · 27/04/2025 13:35

So just to update again one year old had a bad rash all over his bum following this day and it still hasn't gone (improved though). Therefore we are going to talk about it again at next drop off.

Not sure what we can say if they're saying it has been done though?

Do you use the same nappies, wipes and cream as at home?

We didn't, and turned out the ones at nursery irritated her skin.

Also, any chance he’s managing stealth poos? If so, talk about clothing options that help / hinder.

Well I suppose you're entitled to your view but at least with a nursery there is a way of tracking this stuff isn't there.

If you mean you'd use a childminder then this could happen too and if youd never use childcare well good for you but let's not make people feel bad eh

OP I would raise this with nursery it's absolutely not right

I worked in a busy, understaffed nursery years ago and I will fully admit there were times I did forget to change babies for quite afew hours (too many) as I was rushed off my feet and sometimes I was left with 5 or 6 under 2s all by myself so it was hard to keep track of everything and who needed what.
That's not okay though, and shouldn't have happened.Definitely raise it as it will make them think to be more careful.Hopefully not the same issue of being understaffed and babies not getting enough attention.
I haven't used a nursery for either of my babies under the age of 2.5 due to the issues I witnessed 'on the other side' working in one.

We provide the wipes and nappies etc so they'll be the same.

Yes he can do a stealth poo. At home i am constantly smelling and checking him though so I dont miss them.

What clothing options help?

I am dreading the transition to the over 2 room as the ratios will increase to 5 to 1 i think.

For sure no one at nursery will be checking his nappy outside routine changes unless he noticeably smells.
