Nursery closed down for Easter

Is this normal?

DDs nursery closed last Wednesday and doesn't open again until next Monday which means DH and I are having to take time off work.

Surely a business should be able to stagger staffing to provide cover throughout the year (Christmas and New Year, I can kind of understand being closed).

What kind of nursery is it? The nursery mine go to is only a term-time one (and in term-time it's only 9-1pm - it's not a day nursery).

Day nursery - open 8:00 to 6:15 Monday to Friday.

Ds1 goes to a nursery 2 afternoons a week and they were only closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

I didn't think I was being unreasonable. The fees we pay are high enough.

mine is open all days except bank holidays, they used to close at christmas until enough parents complained about it, maybe you should tell them how you feel, other parents may have said something too?

ours was only closed for the 2 bank holidays too. but we do have a shutdown in august. maybe you should lobby other parents and write to the manager. our nursery is run by a management committee of parents and we decide the holidays etc ourselves.

I'm sure it was all made clear at the outset but there were a lot of positives that made us choose this one - location, staff, food. We're happy generally but I just think it is a bit unreasonable to close down for over a week.

It's not until you're actually faced with the situation that you actually realise how inconvenient it can be...

Am surprised at your nursery - does seem a strange way to run a business.

DS's nursery only closes bank holidays - it even opens in between Christmas and New Year.
But, on the flip side, we don't get any 'holiday' weeks so we have to pay 52 weeks of the year regardless of whether DS is there or not.

But they've really just closed down for 4 extra days haven't they? Friday and Monday they would have been shut anyway.

If it's laid out in the T&C I wouldn't have thought there was much you could do about it.

What a nice opportunity to have a break with your kids though, no?

my DS's nursery was closed on the bank holidays. They close for a week between Xmas and New year (which is in the contract) - have you checked your T & Cs???

ours is closed this week. The close this week and for one week between xmas and new year. Open the rest of the year.

When DS and DD were at a day nursery, it was only shut on bank holidays (but we did have to pay for bank holidays, which was slightly annoying).

It does seem a long time to be shut, but if you were told about it, there's not much you can do really.

I wasn't planning on doing anything about it - as you say I can't complain if I knew at the outset. I was just wondering if it is the norm.

Bank holidays - o.k.
But the other days ?????
We have been told, that nursery will be closing this year for the week between chrisitmas and new year. So irritating. Even when you do know about it, it doesn't hit home until it actually happens.

Only for the Bank holidays is the norm, I think.

You might find it is because they find it difficult to get cover is staff wish to go away over Easter and surely the closing is inculded in your fees - ie my nursery we pay monthly but the times it is closed are taken into account when working out how much to pay.

you say that if it's in the t&c's there is nothing you can do but that is not the case, ours used to close christmas week but enough parents asked them about it so they organised to stay open

and why are holidays irritating? do you take holidays from your job?

Ours is closed between Christmas and New Year, but otherwise just for bank holidays.

ours is closed bank holidays, so easter was just friday and monday. christmas they shut until new year i think.

ours is closed the christmas week and bank hols (but DD only goes Tues to Thurs anyway). The hols are factored into the monthly bill which is also evened out over the 12 months. I would think closing at Easter was unusual.

And gdg when I didn't have school age children I would choose to take my holidays out of the school holidays to save a bit of money rather than having to take them then, I've got enough years of that now...

Bozza - I agree with you about that - in some companies (like mine) it is hard to take time off during school holidays as there are so many other staff all wanting the same time off therefore it has to be shared between other members of staff who all have children aswell - there are years of that to come so I can see how annoying it would be to have join that 'bunfight' years before your children are at school.
