Got a week to compile our holiday car cd, please help! Looking for nice singalong songs that aren't too annoyingly kiddy but have something that would appeal to kids. So far I have:

Autumn Almanac by The Kinks (has a caterpillar in it)

Don't stop me now by Queen
Shine by Take That
The Look by Roxette
Fascination by Alphabeat
Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles
Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys

I could go on!

cyteen · 02/08/2009 20:01

They might like Cannonball by the Breeders - good shouty bits.

petitmaman · 02/08/2009 20:41

Southeastastra, I am SOOO glad to find I'm not the only one who misheard the lyrics to "Monster" in such a spectacular way. I too could've sworn it said "bus stop"!

Makes me feel (marginally!!) less like a dweeb...

Tidey · 03/08/2009 00:14

DS (7)'s favourite song is Tribute by Tenacious D. DD (2) likes Blur's Song 2 and Take That's Rule the World.

But maybe I just have strange children..

cyteen · 03/08/2009 09:21

'The Wall' always goes down well with school-age children...

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 03/08/2009 09:39

We used to have the Toons - 'Ooh Eeh Oo Aa Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang!
Gets right into your head but the DCs love it.
Also Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach(!), and a CD of music from South America which DD (11) still listens to.

cornflakegirl · 03/08/2009 09:45

Really recommend They Might Be Giants kids' stuff. We have the ABCs and the 123s and they're great - aimed at kids, but proper music.

mollyroger · 03/08/2009 11:10

These are some of their favourite sing-along faves

Apeman - Kinks (or any Kinks!)

The chances of anything coming from mars - War of the Worlds

Beatles - yellow submarine -all you need is love etc

Abba - Mama Mia (especially if you teach them the diareeah version...)

Dare - gorillaz

Cpountry House - Blur

One Way - Levellers

Queen - any!(fat bottomed girls

Living on a prayer - Bon Jovi

Fog on the tyen - Lindisfarne

Tubthumping - chumbawumba

paddingtonbear1 · 03/08/2009 11:16

dd likes Queen, Katy Perry and Girls Aloud. And she loves that 'Monster' song!
dh hates Girls Aloud with a passion, however.
dh and I like rock music but dd will only tolerate it for a short while!

BaronConker · 03/08/2009 14:48

All 3 of my DSs like I bet you look good on the dancefloor (arctic monkeys), and it was THE big hit of our last birthday party. All the 5 year olds moshing, hilarious. Also massively popular at the moment is Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed peas - especially the bit that goes 'I'm so 3008, you so 2000 and late!'

Sunshinemummy · 03/08/2009 15:13

DS (3) likes:

  • that monster song (it's by the Automatic)
  • Supertramp
  • Amarillo by Tony Christie
  • 1000 Miles by the Proclaimers
  • Cops & Robbers and Mr Ray by the Hoosiers
  • My Blue Sky by ELO
  • Ant Music and Goody Two Shoes by Adam & the Ants
  • I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow
  • Octopus's Garden, Good Day Sunshine, Here Comes the Sun, Yellow Submnarine, Ob la di, I am the Walrus by the Beatles
  • You are my Sunshine - Ray Charles Version
  • Sunny by Bobby Hebb
  • Mistress Mabel by the Fratellis
  • Hey Hey we're the Monkees and Daydream Believer by the Monkees
All of Moon Safari by Air.
Sunshinemummy · 03/08/2009 15:16

Oh yes we also just downloaded for him:

  • I like to move it move it - Reel2reel
  • The Pina Colada Song
  • Wiggle it
SendReceive · 03/08/2009 15:20

Colours Are Brighter is an brilliant collection of original songs for kids sung by grown-up artists like the Kooks.

We've got it and even DH likes it.

Proceeds to Save the Children, too

cyteen · 03/08/2009 16:22

Adam and the Ants, great idea!

MANATEEequineOHARA · 03/08/2009 17:27

My dc's favorite song of all time is Spectacular Spectalular from Moulin Rouge! And also Hindi Sad Diamonds and quite a few others from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack...which is very much fine by me

LoveBuckets · 03/08/2009 19:48

LOL Baronconker, DS1(4) has been utterly gripped by Boom Boom Pow on MTV lately, it's hilarious watching him trying to do the moves. DH hates Black Eyed Peas but it will be worth it to watch DS1 in the rearview mirror. He also freaked out completely to Higher State of Consciousness by Josh Wink yesterday.

Sendreceive, I'm 'avin that! Thanks.

mine love the soundtrack from Juno, especially the vampire one and track 15 (about a flower who wishes it were a tree etc!) we all sing along to that. It's by the moldy peaches i think.

cheapskatemum · 03/08/2009 20:46

I can't believe there's a DH in existence that doesn't like Girls Aloud, but I suppose we are talking listening, rather than watching, here. The Pina Colada Song??? That would be my excuse for not going on the family holiday this year! My suggestion is Madness - Our House, House of Fun, Baggy Trousers etc. Also, some reggae e.g. The Israelites by Desmond Dekka, Monkey Spanner.

GentlyDoesIt · 03/08/2009 21:29

Upbeat ones with silly sounds to join in with:

Doctorin' The Tardis - KLF (or Timelords)
Nellie The Elephant - Toy Dolls (the version with the "whoooooooaaaaaa....")
Ca Plein Pour Moi (Ooh Eeh Aah Uuh!)
19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) - Gorillaz "Got the cool shoe shine"
Brown-Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (sha la la la etc)
Baggy Trousers - Madness
