what cover versions really really annoy you?

And which do you like?

On the chat thread , someone said they were snobby about people liking songs that are COVERS by x-factor artists, and that they don't realise they are covers. I suppose Alex covering hallelujah (how very dare she??) is an obvious one.

I have always HATED 'she's the one' as COVERED by Robbie Williams- it always made me irrationally that when it was out NO-ONE ever mentioned World Party....

will now ponder which cover I like....

Yes@daftpunk.

'Light up, light upppppppppppp...'

I cannot abide Snow Patrol, anyway. I think they should be sent to a tiny outer Hebridean Island with Leona 'Nicey Nice' Lewis and they should all be forced to listen to both versions of that horrible record over and over again until their ears bleed.

EyeballsintheSky · 25/04/2009 20:59

Tide is High for me as well. Yes I know it was a cover to begin with but Blondie put some effort in and made it theirs. Atomic Kitten are just shite. It makes me want to kick someone

daftpunk · 25/04/2009 21:00

lol MM...i don't mind snow patrol...

i really like live lounge covers....the guillemots cover of sam sparros black & gold is brilliant

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 21:02

LOL@Mrsmattie I heart snow patrol! but that was funny!

Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven - how could we forget that insult to music?

spursmummy · 25/04/2009 21:04

For me nothing can beat Elbow covering the Charlie's Angels song orginally by Destiny's Child.

most hated - whichever one hit wonder boy band that covered a-ha's Take on Me; not only was it awful in itself, but it was the first song I loved from my childhood which was covered and it made me feel old!!

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 21:05

You Shook Me All Night Long ACDC - if you can stomach it, take a look at celine dion doing air guitar here!!! It is embarrasing to watch!

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 25/04/2009 21:06

Oh, I feel redundant, you've quoted the two I really dislike - the Leona Lewis sickly sweet version of the Snow Patrol song, which I did quite like.

And Home as overblown to comic proportions, complete with cliche key-change by Westlife. Micheal Buble has a voice like high-cocoa content chocolate, and it doesn't need embellishment. Miles better.

Oh, and Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman doing Something Stupid. Blech.

And Matt Willis's version of Don't Slow Down. Argh.

And any dance versions of Bryan Adam's Run to You, of which there have been many. Bastards.

Greensleeves · 25/04/2009 21:07

whoever covered Spirit In The Sky recently - bloody atrocious

fatzak · 25/04/2009 21:07

Annie Lennox's cover of Ash's Shining Light. But at the moment she just annoys me full stop!

hazeyjane · 25/04/2009 21:08

'Heres Where the Story Ends' by The Sundays, covered by TinTinOut, it really annoys me that they only ever play the cover on the radio, and it is shit, compared to the beautiful original.

pointydog · 25/04/2009 21:08

fatzak - I was just about to post that! weird

spursmummy · 25/04/2009 21:12

ooh yes fatzak, I wasn't a big fan of the original to start with but Annie Lennox's cover is awful. I like to sing "you are a whining shite" over it, it seems to fit better

pointydog · 25/04/2009 21:13

I like Ahs's version a lot

Greensleeves · 25/04/2009 21:13

rofl spursmummy

Snorbs · 25/04/2009 21:15

Raahh - you're right, that cover of "Song to the Siren" is astonishing. Gives me goosebumps, but then most of Liz Fraser's work does that to me...

(Another obscure, but very good track is Fields of the Nephilim cover of Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home a Heartache". The Sisters of Mercy's cover of "Jolene" is also not to be missed)

As for bad covers, who are the shitemonkeys who recently ripped the arse out of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven"? And why, oh why, haven't they died of shame yet?

gillybeanie · 25/04/2009 21:16

Ronan Keating and somebody else did a cover of "Fairy Tale of New York" i mean how could they that is a classic should never had been allowed

MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 21:16

I had forgotten about Robbie & Nicole's 'Something Stupid'@Kay

I am not a violent person but I really do get the urge to kick Nicole Kidman in the shin whenever that awful video comes on...

pointydog · 25/04/2009 21:16

raah, love this mortal coil version

lou33 · 25/04/2009 21:17

was it girls aloud and teh sugababes who covered walk this way?

that too

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 25/04/2009 21:18

MrsMattie, she simpers through the whole thing. And WTF is the fat glittery heart g-string about. Ugh, the very idea of Robbie going down on anyone...

lou33 · 25/04/2009 21:21

you know weirdly, i usually dream about people i know, but on occasion i have dreamed about mr williams doing v bad things to me

i quite liked it

lou33 · 25/04/2009 21:22

i tell you what is a good cover though, obadiah parkers version of hey ya

fantastic

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 25/04/2009 21:31

Lou33, I'm all for dirty dreams and I applaud you. He just looks too buggy-eyed for me.

lou33 · 25/04/2009 21:32

he looks like a dirty bugger tho, so that overrules buggy eyes imo

lou33 · 25/04/2009 21:33

i should just clarify that if i dream about people it is people i know, but not usually a dirty dream

but it seems that when i have those its him in it

no idea why, i mean he could definitely have it, but he isnt someone i spend my days thinking about iyswim
