I'm too idle to make up a playlist. Do it for me, and start with "What time is now" by the Smiths.

lol I had a feeling Dire Straits would meet with disdain, but thought it was worth a try, I think that particular song does fit in with late 70s/early 80s "alternative" themes.

cyteen · 18/04/2009 21:00

Lol at 'What Time Is Now' - the kind of mistake I've been making lately!

The only Dire Straits song that any self-respecting indie-girl can listen to is 'Romeo And Juliet' methinks.

Happy When It Rains - The Jesus And Mary Chain
Also their entire Darklands album.

Eloise - The Damned

Bohemian Like You - Dandy Warhols

Another vote for Fake Plastic Trees because it is so gorgeous. Also 'Creep'.

The Cure - Charlotte Sometimes

Hole - Violet

The Feeling - Sewn

The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet

1959 - Sisters Of mercy

Here Comes The Rain - The Cult

Oh... Lost weekend- excellent song- so jangly!
I had forgotten about teenage fanclub- how could I do that?
Love The the too.

Considering how 'crunching' "How soon is now" is... there are an awful lot of jangly suggestions on this thread

RaggedRobin · 21/04/2009 21:30

heh heh... most of my suggestions were from my "jangle" folder.

potplant · 21/04/2009 21:34

If you want jangles you've got to start with This Charming Man.

potplant I heard it on the radio at the weekend, and it always amazes me how fresh it is- the opening riff.... genius!

retiredgoth2 · 21/04/2009 23:21

How Soon Is Now? The Smiths

(was I supposed to start with this? I may have misunderstood. Saw them play it live, splendidly, in 1985...)

Could You Be The One? Husker Du

Dalliance Wedding Present

Dare Wedding Present (these two segued memorably together at the start of the gorgeous 'Seamonsters' LP)

Burning Down The House Talking Heads

Jacket Hangs The Blue Aeroplanes (Bristol's finest!)

Brian Rix The Brilliant Corners (good call, Janeite. Another Bristle band, I thought no-one else remembered it... It is on You Tube now, though)

Doppelganger The Luddites (you will need to have had a serious early 80s Peel habit to remember this)

Ma Sim Ba Bele The Unknown Cases (ditto)

.....and what's this nonsense about the Mission's version of Like a Hurricane? 'tis tosh. The original only will suffice.....

retiredgoth2 · 21/04/2009 23:24

....as an aside, I was reading a 'what school did you go to' thread earlier.

This caused me alarm, as many of the respondents seemed to be bizarrely youthful.

....the selections here lead me to suspect a slightly more (ahem) mature type of contributor...

EachPeachPearMum · 21/04/2009 23:32

Ah RG- do you like Mission's version of Dream On at all?
And I love Zen Arcade... haven;t listened for far too long...
Youthful? well... too young to have been allowed to see The Smiths perform

retiredgoth2 · 21/04/2009 23:40

.....sadly, The Mission never held any mystery for me, Each Peach.

After I discovered that Wayne Hussey was not from gritty Leeds, but in fact from Yate (see the book 'Crap Towns' for further info. I knew some people at 'The Whip' out local Goth disco who had been at school with him... apparently he had failed his trial with Bristol Rovers. Something of a feat)

....I love Zen Arcade, too.

....and am old enough that I saw The Smiths twice. 1985 was not, sadly, the first occasion....

upagumtree · 21/04/2009 23:57

The Smiths - How soon is now
The Wedding Present - My Favourite Dress
Orange juice - Rip it up
LLoyd Cole and the Commotions - 2CV
The House of Love - Christine

Talulah Gosh - Bringing up baby
The Smiths - Sister i'm a poet
Strawberry Switchblade - Yesterday
REM - It's the end of the world as we know it
Joy Division - Love will tear us apart

upagumtree · 22/04/2009 00:00

Oops, Blister in the sun

retiredgoth2 · 22/04/2009 00:04

...another fine call, first Violent femmes LP.

I'll pick 'Good Feeling' from it.....

RaggedRobin · 22/04/2009 00:04

retired goth 2: how very odd. i was discussing BOTH brian rix by the brilliant corners and ma sim ba bele by the unknown cases this month. spooky!

retiredgoth2 · 22/04/2009 00:10

...crikey, RR.

Still no takers for The Luddites?

...or The Backyard by Miracle Legion?

Dirty by Hard Corps?

(Thinks: what obscure area of brain stores this stuff??)
