I saw Catatonia in the Water Rats pub in King's Cross, circa 1994, in the middle of the bill (if memory serves, some long-forgotten band called Octopus were headlining). They weren't very good.

Also saw The Darkness at the Camden Barfly before they took off. They weren't very good either!

I think I may be going back rather further than some of you

The Jam in 1977, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark in 1979 (supporting Gary Numan) when they were just two blokes and a tape recorder called Winston, Ultravox sometime in the late 70s when they were Ultravox! and John Foxx was still the lead singer, The Specials when they were The Special AKA The Coventry Automatics.

Ecmo · 09/06/2008 23:31

Blink 182 supporting Crowded House in Manchester in 1995. It was meant to be the Cranberries supporting but their lead singer broke a ?leg skiiing so couldn't come.

serenity · 10/06/2008 00:28

ooooh it wasn't Blink 182 supporting Crowded House, it was a completely different band called Blink - they were from Ireland like the Cranberries, and were bloody brilliant. Blink 182 had to add the 182 because the Irish lot were the original Blink (does that make sense?) I still play their first album (A Map of the Universe by Blink) to death in the car (The divine Nick Seymour did their cover art, and produced them for a bit)

Blink wiki entry

I have completely ruined my goth/alt credibility now haven't I? CH are my guilty pleasure band, I saw them play Wembley for the same tour as you TC.

TotalChaos · 10/06/2008 10:00

thanks for correcting me Serenity, I didn't think much of the band I heard so I was surprised when I thought they had made it big years later!

hattyyellow · 10/06/2008 10:25

Curiosity killed the Cat! Impressive, non? At a local fair before they err, hit the big time...

Wezzle · 10/06/2008 10:29

I've just been reminded that I saw th red hot chili peppers in 1990....don't remember much about that one though....tis a bit of a blur

itwasntme · 10/06/2008 10:31

INXS at Guildford Civic Hall.

mistypeaks · 10/06/2008 10:51

I met Marti Pellow when I was younger on holiday with my mom. He was in the same hotel as us and I saw him nearly every day. I remember him as a v hunky scot who was nice enough to pander to the obvious crush of a pre-teen (not in a pervy way) The week after I came home there was this hunky chap on the telly with his band WetWetWet doing their debut single (think it was on Going Live or something on a Saturday morning!) I was .

whinegums · 10/06/2008 10:59

Wezzle, The Broken Doll, fab pub!!!!! Brings back happy memories!

I saw Oasis at the Riverside and paid a fiver for the ticket; REM; Pulp (supporting St Etienne who were cak); Skunk Anansie; Kaiser Chiefs; Franz Ferdinand. I know there's more, but brain is mush today - they are my top picks.

Have to say Oasis only paid a couple of songs before fighting broke out between the band the crowd though! Gah!

wessexgirl · 10/06/2008 11:03

In Bristol in the 80s I couldn't go to a club without tripping over Massive Attack doing a live set, often with friends like Neneh Cherry etc.

Saw Pulp in a pub.

Saw Take That by accident - interrupting my shopping business in Nottingham city centre by prancing around to a tape of 'It Only Takes a Minute Girl'.

crumpet · 10/06/2008 11:32

REM in Portsmouth town hall in about 1989

Wezzle · 10/06/2008 11:36

Whinegums I've probably met you The Doll's not there any more you know....can't believe they demolished such a landmark

It was the Riverside where I saw the Chili Peppers and many more but I couldn't tell you who

castille · 10/06/2008 11:40

Not at a gig, but I tripped over Thom Yorke who was playing his guitar on the stairs of a university hall of residence

The H has gone to see them in Paris today

stepfordwife · 10/06/2008 11:46

the police at slough college
they were fab
before sting discovered dirges and tantric (yaaaaaaaawn) sex

whinegums · 10/06/2008 11:53

Wezzle, I know, the Doll should have been a listed building!!! Scandalous that it's now gone!!! And the same for the Riverside - ah, so many happy memories!

Tinker · 10/06/2008 19:15

Bree I think it was £10. You saw them for nothing didn't you? It was also at the Royal Court in Liverpool - already mentioned on here. I also saw Bauhuas there when there were only about 100 in the audience

OiSerenity, I've had a crush on Nick Seymour for years, hands off!

ivyJkaty44 · 10/06/2008 19:18

The Spice girls at there first gig for EMI employees summer bbq at a hotle in Kenilworth - half the staff walked out and went to the bar they were so bad. Cavaner played as well topping the bill - he never made it.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 10/06/2008 19:19

Tinker

50p in the local hall.

They were shoite ,if it is any consolation.

Tinker · 10/06/2008 19:22

They told us "We love you Liverpool, you're our second home" - liars

BettySpaghetti · 10/06/2008 19:24

Radiohead, several times in the days they were called On a Friday

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 10/06/2008 19:25

In fact just remembered....

They were so shoite, that Joe Mc Grane went up to them at the interval and told them to go home.

OMG... I have just sprayed wine at that memory.
