Any metal fans around? I need an education!

So I've just started dating someone who is very into his heavy metal, and despite being a rock fan it's not an area of music I know well. To get an education what should I start listening to? Smile

My music taste is also stuck in early 00's Grin i'm properly fan-girling over seeing korn and disturbed in a matter of days!!
I like nu metal as well as other more "approved" genres, and make no apologies for that! Wink

The pretty reckless are another female fronted band that i like

And everyone needs to have a listen to babymetal, the marmite band of the moment!

eternityleave · 06/06/2016 14:55

Yes I am Whiskey Smile

I actually quite like Babymetal Beyond, as do several die-hard metalers I know (even if they won't say it too loudly) Grin

Looking forward to seeing all the headliners (esp Rammstein who I hear are fantastic live) but a few of the smaller acts are intriguing me so it'll be good to catch something different.

Starting to get really excited about it all now Smile

I love Rammstein, looking forward to seeing them on Friday. My fave is , and I think Spieluhr is a close 2nd. Grin

I love Iron Maiden too, was a spectacular 18th birthday when I went to a concert. Grin

For new stuff, I've recently been listening to a Japanese band called Crossfaith who are only half my age, shame

Linkin Park are another band I like.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 06/06/2016 19:58

Feuer frei is my fave too!!

MakingJudySmile · 06/06/2016 20:14

If you're listening on Spotify then whilst you're trying out the Bands who will be at Download try all some of the 'related artists' too. I find this a great way to discover bands of a similar music.

MidnightVelvetthe5th · 06/06/2016 20:18

I used to listen to a lot of metal when I was a teenage goth, was there a genre called industrial metal or have I imagined it? Possibly nine inch nails and there was an album I had with a greenlit skull on it?

I may have imagined it, I was doing a lot of drugs around that time!

RaspberryOverload · 07/06/2016 21:03

Rammstein have been classed as Industrial Metal before now.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 08/06/2016 06:50

Are you two going today or friday? I'm going today (woop!) just waiitng for my shopping to come first Grin

eternityleave · 08/06/2016 16:24

I'm getting there tomorrow night Smile but unusually for me I've already packed! Can't wait but hope the weather holds, looks like it might be rainy?

eternityleave · 08/06/2016 22:25

Stupid question but what do you wear to something like this? Trying to pack and the awkward weather isnt helping my options.

For the weekend I have denim shorts (bare legs dry faster than wet denim) and more vests. All with either flip flops ☀️ or my long docs 🌧

I don't live very far away from the site, so I'm not camping, just turning up each day.

I've never been to Download before, and I'm going to be alone.

I keep looking at the forecast, and I'm not really sure what to wear. It's going to be warm, and I was thinking a cool linen shirt, jeans and sandals to keep my feet cool (although, flip flops sound ideal for me).

I've got a bag with a pac-a-mac, portable charger, tickets, dosh, driving licence (in case I need ID), my hearing aid spares, contact lens kit and sunnies. (Yes, hearing aids Grin)

And reading glasses.

And I have been called by my mum who has sternly ordered me to phone every day to confirm I'm alive Grin I'm 47........

(I'd wear shorts, but I'm fat Grin)

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 10/06/2016 20:13

Anyone a bit damp? Grin

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 11/06/2016 09:33

And apart from the rain, I have a (slightly outing) story to tell. Coming back from the village Thursday night I went backwards off a curb in my chair, tipped up backwards and knocked myself out! Woke up in ambulance and had to stay in the field hospital for a few hours!! Grin

Whisky2014 · 11/06/2016 09:38

Jeez I have just seen fb videos of the site...what a shame! Hope you are surviving eternity. OMG beyond hope you are OK!!! Be safe x

RaspberryOverload · 13/06/2016 16:57

Beyond hope you're ok now Thanks

I got really damp, but not camping so turned up in dry clothes every day.

Given the amount of mud, I'm astonished my boots held out so well. they are drying in the porch. When dry, I'll brush the mud off and give them a clean.

But the music, well, I was very happy. I even ended up in the pit watching Rammstein. As a middle-aged mum, I must have stood out among the mostly young lads down there Grin

Seen some fab bands I've not heard of before, so will be checking them out; Rival Sons, Inglorius, Atreyu, Juliette & The Licks, loads more.

I also managed to get sunburn! My face is a lovely red Grin

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 13/06/2016 17:22

Home, clean and dry :) My heads okay now, just my neck thats suffering from the jolt.

DH left our clothes bag in the mid section of the tent on friday, so they were soaked. Luckily i'd put some inside another bag so we could just about improvise some dry outfits.

Cooroo · 13/06/2016 21:48

What an educational thread! May have to save it somewhere. My DD had introduced me to Avenged, Evanescence and best of all System of a Down. As a mostly classical music nut it's fun to have a complete change and sing along to Mesmerise! She's just back from Download. Cold, wet and developing tonsillitis. But determined to try again next year and be better prepared. Says Rammstein were amazing. Missed a lot of the bands she wanted to see due to drink and sleep loss!

eternityleave · 14/06/2016 09:37

I'm safely home and had a great time (feeling it today though!). Saw some great bands - made an effort to see some of the smaller ones and found a lot of them more enjoyable than the bigger ones.

I've got mud in places I didn't know I had.

Hope you're feeling better beyond.

Was anyone else disappointed by Sabbath? Ozzy's really lost his voice hasn't he Sad

OP posts:
BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 14/06/2016 19:19

Yeah ozzys been rather crap for a while now imo, very much getting old.

I'm okay now, been to my gp today and she confirmed that i have whiplash from my fall! Grin

Did anyone else see Amon Amarth? I was very impressed

GipsyDanger · 14/06/2016 19:23

Babymetal Blush Damn it's so catchy

RaspberryOverload · 14/06/2016 19:33

I did leave early during the Sabbath set, they've never been a band I was particularly into, and it was raining heavily by then.

I loved Rammstein and Iron Maiden. I liked Gojira and was disappointed not to see Ghost.

AndYourBirdCanSing · 14/06/2016 19:46

Some of the bands on this thread shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the Gods who are Metallica Grin

Shame about Sabbath. I saw Iron Maiden in 2006 and they were still good then, still hear good things about them live now
