Next week is National Adoption Week, and to mark it we're hosting a webchat with Francesca Polini, Chair and Founder of adoption support and advocacy organisation Adopt a Better Way.

While adoption rates have risen over the last few years, Adopt a Better Way take the view that the 67,000 children living in care in the UK would benefit from even quicker adoption routes, given the often poor outcomes for children living in care.

Adopt a Better Way aims to change the adoption process, and Francesca will be joining us to discuss how she believes this could be achieved to the benefit of the children concerned. Francesca founded Adopt a Better Way after adopting her first child from Mexico.

Please do join us live on Monday 3 November from 12.30 - 1.30pm to talk about all things adoption-related; as ever, if you can't make it then, do please post your questions in advance on this thread.

Thanks
MNHQ

Hi Everyone

Francesca is here and ready to get going - welcome to MNHQ Francesca!

Great questions so far - and do keep them coming.

Katie

@Madrigals

Is the problem here the remit of the webchat? The remit was stated to be 'all things adoption related'. Maybe it should have been focusing on the private members bill or specific issues in how to make domestic approval faster?

Hi Madrigals

We decided on the remit of the webchat - and in hindsight it does seem like it might have been too broad. I think we wanted to be able to understand and help address concerns from as wider group as possible - for example potential adopters, adopters and those who know families adopting.

It seems like there are at least two issues here - immediate concerns/ frustrations/ emergencies and advice needed on where to go to get real help, and longer term possibilities to improve policies and practices.

We'll look at developing content and support on these areas, but please let us know what else you need and we'll see if we can get it!

Hi All

Francesca is heading off now - but very keen to keep the convo flowing. Please do post here. We'll also keep and eye to see what resources we can develop.

Best

Katie

Hi All

Thanks for all your feedback. The webchat was 'stickied' in the busiest areas of the site with sliders in adoption, but it's an ongoing challenge for us to make sure everyone who wants to see a webchat (on any topic) does see and know it's going on (when there's lots of other stuff going on onsite).

In terms of topics we could hold future chats on - please do suggest and we will try to arrange.

We did have a webchat with British Association for Adoption and Fostering last year, but thought that it might be helpful to have someone 'outside' of the official system to give a different view.

We also had the Minister responsible from Adoption on for a webchat - but this was on SEN (another of his areas). We can certainly look at inviting him back on if that would be helpful.

Thanks

Katie

Hi Kristina

Yes - I think a more focussed webchat would have been more productive.

Perhaps what we could do is work out what needs to be answered; eg questions about the process for potential adopters, questions about post adoption support for adopters, questions about the overall system for govt. etc and then we can try and get in the right support.

Hi All

Thanks so much for continuing to engage. I'll check in to see if we can invite Edward Timpson, sounds like a very good idea, Familiessharegerms also a great idea for Adopt a Better way to have a stickied thread asking for feedback - I'll offer that.
