I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

judgejudyandexecutioner · 02/02/2018 21:50

Can I wear my Roller Boots?

TalkinPeace · 02/02/2018 21:51

I danced to Blue Monday with my late ex
and went to heavy metal discos with my now husband
the 80's were mine, all mine

I add FU jeans to the mix

CurlyhairedAssassin · 02/02/2018 21:52

I’m just flicking through my copy of Number One magazine while chewing my way through a packet of Pacers.

I’ve got “The Secret Of Association” album by Paul Young playing on my ghetto blaster. A few more spaces on my bedroom wall for this week’s poster of him among Wham, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears.

My bedroom was done up a few weeks back. Red and white. I wanted a Pierrot theme but my mum And dad said it would date and I’d grow out of it.

I’m going downstairs in a minute, will have to keep an eye on my Swatch watch. The Colbys are on and I fancy Jeff.

An early night having a flick through the Body Shop Book (going to try their stuff instead of Biactol), before reading a couple of chapters of Flowers in the Attic. more telly in the morning - Going Live. And then playing on Horace Goes Skiing and School Daze on my ZX Spectrum for a couple of hours before me and my sister will get ready for the disco st the church hall.

I’ve got a white batwing dress and electric blue tights. Stilettos too, of course. Heather shimmer for my lips, electric blue eyeshadow and mascara. can’t wait!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 02/02/2018 21:59

Curlyhaired I had a Pierrot themed room, I thought they were watching me in the night! Your parents were right, but for the wrong reasons! 😂

ThankYouGillian · 02/02/2018 22:05

Got room for me too, please? I'll bring all my Spandau Ballet 12" discs along, and spend most of the night dreaming of Gary Kemp......
The perm's freshly done and I'll make a choice between my 'Choose Life' t shirt, or the 'Spandau say Frankie goes to Hospital' version Shock

SingaSong12 · 02/02/2018 22:08

This makes me sad. I love the idea of the 80s - Saturday telly, no responsibility. Walkman, shell suits, that dewberry body shop stuff.

Please bring me back lots of real Cadbury's, pop tarts and recordings of neighbours. Check out whether we have any of the stuff from Tomorrow's World.

(Sorry I'm not coming though - the reality my 80s was undiagnosed ASD and being lonely.)

Readermumof3 · 02/02/2018 22:13

I'm now watching The Wedding Singer 😂 DH and I met in 1985 when the film is set. We were both 15 then 🙈

GlassHeart1 · 02/02/2018 22:14

I welled up with nostalgia on holiday last year when they put on a little show Electric Dreams in a holiday park ...

AndromedaPerseus · 02/02/2018 22:19

Have been to ’Blockbusters’ and got out ’Flash Dance’ and ’Gregory’s Girl’. Anyone fancy coming back to mine’s afterwards to watch them on the VHS.

TalkinPeace · 02/02/2018 22:24

Sunday afternoon listening to the charts

walking down to menzies to see the singles chart laid out on the racks

the excitement of the first ever stretch jeans

MTV

Katkincake · 02/02/2018 22:24

Oh wow, flashback central - I was a late 80s / early 90s shopper / disco attender.

I'll be out in my Aztec print hoodie and bleached jeans with a spritz of exclamation when I've finished recording the top 10 on my ghetto blaster, I've got to pause it during the talking and adverts. Grin

BestIsWest · 02/02/2018 22:26

I’m a 70s girl at heart but I’m game if I can come wearing my new romantic frilly shirt with my floppy fringe and artful scarf with tassels and threaded with gold lurex. Burgundy suede pixie boots.

I’ll be listening to Ashes to Ashes, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Teardrop explodes. Party Fears Too.

I’ll be drinking Malibu or Tia Maria and Coke and eating Dime bars.

Unless Dave takes me to the Cinema to see Gregory’s Girl.

MrsBartlet · 02/02/2018 22:28

47 here and I am coming too but first I have to stop off at the off license to buy some woodpecker to sneak into the school disco. I will be very happy to be at home with my little brother, still alive and downstairs on the sofa watching CHIPS while I am upstairs putting on my electric blue mascara and listening to Wham. Happy days Smile

Backingvocals · 02/02/2018 22:33

Great thread. I almost fell over from the head rush from hearing Thinking of You by the Colour Field on TOTP this week. And my love for Terry Hall still burns brightly. I need to find my giant anchor earrings, my pale pink cotton knit Aran jumper from Jigsaw which is still the most aspirational piece of clothing I’ve ever owned, and my Joe Boxer boots and I’m good to go.

ShackUp · 02/02/2018 22:49

OP I ate all the 5-4-3-2-1 bars back in 1988, it's why they don't sell them any more. They were so delicious, I couldn't let anyone else have them, so I finished off the world's supply.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 22:58

shack did you also scoff all the Terry's Pyramints and Horlicks tablets cause I really miss those?

OP posts:
ShackUp · 02/02/2018 23:00

Yes cruise and the Pacers, and the Golden Cups

SingaSong12 · 02/02/2018 23:00

Shack how could you be so mean - I'm going to tell on you

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 23:03

Don't worry shack I'll stop the time machine in 1988 and you can give your younger self a good talking too!

OP posts:
ShackUp · 02/02/2018 23:05

I bet if we were to petition Terry's to bring Pyramints back, we'd only experience disappointment. In my head, they were like a glorious fat After Eight mint, but in reality I bet they'd be insipid toothpastey yukness Sad

I’m gonna wear my naf naf jumper, soviet jeans and dr martens too.

If we go anywhere to eat I’m going to order prawn cocktail, so sophisticated....
