to make a little sign for this woman?

I have ranted on a previous occasion about the morning rat-run through our village so very quick summary:

Single track roads - short-cut to city - I am apparently only person who needs to go opposite direction during rush-hour - majority of people coming the other way clearly think I am unreasonable for driving through my own village and glare and head-shake at me - I am cross.

Obviously it is the holidays now, so the school run traffic is missing which makes life much easier. However, there is one woman who I see every single time. She drives very fast on a narrow, twisty road with several blind bends so I finish up crawling around corners in case she comes hurtling the other way. She flatly refuses to back up even a couple of feet to the nearest passing space, and she makes no attempt to move over so that both cars can pass without scraping through the hedge. So I finish up reversing to the next passing space with her driving about 6 inches off my front bumper with a face like thunder, and then as soon as the road widens at all, she squeezes past, glaring at me all the time and shaking her head.

Bearing in mind the following:

  1. I live here and have as much right to leave the village as she does to cut through it.

  2. I drive a very small car which causes minimal obstruction.

  3. I don't drive dangerously fast.

  4. I am the one reversing and getting off the road.

would I be unreasonable to make a little sign saying "The next time you shake your head at me will be the last time I reverse for you. I can sit here all day - how about you?"

Would probably be unreasonable to add "cowbag" at the end, I suppose.

My mother has a woman like this on her hill. Daft cow can't reverse so even if she's 2 m from a pull in and the other driver is 100 m beyond one she'll stare down the other driver til they reverse along winding bog roads for her.

Until she had the misfortune to meet dp that is Grin

He had heard about her from my mom so knew what she was at and he refused to move for her, turned the engine off and crossed his arms and stared her down til she eventually gave in and wobbled her way back to the pull in.

He gave her the thank you wave as he went past and she almost choked on her own bile Grin

Who the hell beeps at someone on a horse!! When I've ridden everyone thankfully were lovely and gave me a wide berth (and dp too the one time he came out, which is good because he dithered - for some reason thought horses understood conversational english rather than the clear commands I told him; lots of 'let's go here shall we, ooh no let's not stop and eat grass).

I love the idea of MNetters doig a flash mob of breastfeeding zombies. Please please do this. Well, the sign thing. Zombies may be extreme.

Selks · 15/04/2011 20:01

OP, I feel your pain! I live in a rat-run village too. Most drivers are pretty courteous, but there is the odd knob who refuses to reverse and just barges through.

Do the sign thing! Do it! Grin

ExitPursuedByALamb · 15/04/2011 20:08

Oh yes - MNHQ a cowpat emoticon, that would make my day.

ChaoticAngelofchocolateeggs · 15/04/2011 20:22

Grin @ "'let's go here shall we, ooh no let's not stop and eat grass"

I can't do the breastfeeding, dcs are 16 & 18. However, if you get me out of bed at 6am then the zombie bit will be no problem Grin

missbusiness · 15/04/2011 20:32

I used to cross a busy road with my DS's then age 5 and 4. we ended up waiting so long to cross each lane I got the boys to paint a sign saying 'please stop and let us cross'

It worked like a charm as drivers slowed down to read it and gave us time to cross over.

not quite the same thing but OP I would like you to know a sign worked for us

placemarking also

WillYouStewTheLambShankOh · 15/04/2011 20:38

Pardon me while I sit here with flask & scones and refuse to budge until I hear what happens next.

NellieForbush · 15/04/2011 20:38

"do the sign, do the sign!"

Remember your other thread, can't believe you've been so tolerant and not had a 'falling down' moment. Keep us posted!!

unfitmother · 15/04/2011 20:43

Do a BIG sign!

CarGirl · 15/04/2011 20:44
Grin
WillYouStewTheLambShankOh · 15/04/2011 20:47

"I'm volunteering my services to dress up as a zombie and jump out of the bushes if you like. You could sit there with a horrified look on your face and pointing behind her car while hundreds of zombified MNer's pop out of the bushes covered in gore to chase her down the lane"

Great idea (and nickname) BarbiesBeaver but to extend your idea, we want this woman to reverse, don't we.

What we need is for kungfupanda to sit there gibbering hysterically and gesturing over her shoulder with her shoulder, while we advance from behind KFP's car.

WillYouStewTheLambShankOh · 15/04/2011 20:48

over her shoulder with her thumb Grin

headfairy · 15/04/2011 20:49

all the zombies could then break out in to the thriller dance?

Marking my spot too. Do the sign: do something. Rude cow that she is.

thederkinsdame · 15/04/2011 21:04

I know a lot of this is just talk, but please be careful! Someone pulled out in front of me once, making me swerve across 3 lanes of traffic. I hooted my horn, as he nearly killed us both. When I stopped at the lights he opened my door and punched me. Just remember, as satisfying as it is, you never know who's behind the wheel of the other car.

YAB a little U for starting this thread on a Friday Grin, it's going to be a long wait to find out what happens!

Not unreasonable at all to make her reverse though.

gnushoes · 15/04/2011 21:25

placemarking too.
the world divides into people who drive apologetically and those who drive like arses.

Jaydles · 15/04/2011 21:31

Bloody hell what a fucking idiot he punched you for daring to beep at his fuckwit driving!
Ok KFP make a sign and sit tight but make sure you have locked the doors first :)

PigeonPie · 15/04/2011 21:32

You could also get an Institute of Advanced Motorists leaflet to hand to her / pop under her windscreen wiper (if you want to get that close) when you get out to go for your picnic, to suggest she might like some slightly more advanced training Grin

I'll come and form a convoy behind you if you're in North Oxfordshire.

GentleOtter · 15/04/2011 21:34

Oh good! A zombie plan with mums, cows, tartan flasks and new emoticons.
I feel the need to panic buy.Grin

thederkinsdame · 15/04/2011 21:35

Agree with Jaydles, keep your doors locked and go for the reading a book option.

TandB · 15/04/2011 21:41

My DP really, really wants the zombie thriller dance plan to go ahead!

Thederkinsdame - that is awful.

Pigeonpie - Somerset now - I was in Oxfordshire when I saw the horse-crushed car.

OP posts:
PigeonPie · 15/04/2011 21:45

Oh bother - I was looking forward to a convoy Grin Somerset is a bit far of a morning after school and playgroup drop off!
