to make a little sign for this woman?

I have ranted on a previous occasion about the morning rat-run through our village so very quick summary:

Single track roads - short-cut to city - I am apparently only person who needs to go opposite direction during rush-hour - majority of people coming the other way clearly think I am unreasonable for driving through my own village and glare and head-shake at me - I am cross.

Obviously it is the holidays now, so the school run traffic is missing which makes life much easier. However, there is one woman who I see every single time. She drives very fast on a narrow, twisty road with several blind bends so I finish up crawling around corners in case she comes hurtling the other way. She flatly refuses to back up even a couple of feet to the nearest passing space, and she makes no attempt to move over so that both cars can pass without scraping through the hedge. So I finish up reversing to the next passing space with her driving about 6 inches off my front bumper with a face like thunder, and then as soon as the road widens at all, she squeezes past, glaring at me all the time and shaking her head.

Bearing in mind the following:

  1. I live here and have as much right to leave the village as she does to cut through it.

  2. I drive a very small car which causes minimal obstruction.

  3. I don't drive dangerously fast.

  4. I am the one reversing and getting off the road.

would I be unreasonable to make a little sign saying "The next time you shake your head at me will be the last time I reverse for you. I can sit here all day - how about you?"

Would probably be unreasonable to add "cowbag" at the end, I suppose.

Kungfu, we need you on twitter! you could tweet your updates, to those of us that are there and also to @MumsnetTowers... and they could update the home page feed.

I'm @LilMsHissyFit.... there are a stack of us on there already!

marking my spot for next week

Jbck · 21/04/2011 15:23

Did she have a ' I recognise you from somewhere but can't place you' look on her face?

MCos · 21/04/2011 17:37

"Anyway, now when I reverse for some twat one I wind the window down when they are level with me and commiserate with them on their inability to reverse. That makes them quite cross."

ha ha - love this!

TheSkiingGardener · 21/04/2011 17:51

Gah, had watched this thread and lurked and couldn't wait to find out what happened.

Can we have a whip round to pay for extra nursery sessions?

TheOriginalFAB · 21/04/2011 18:12

Maybe she has seen this thread and was trying to avoid you, OP?Grin

TandB · 21/04/2011 19:34

Pigeonpie - definitely not a fellow nursery-user - she would have been too early to drop off - we got there bang on 8 and we were the first people.

JBck - no, just her usually grumpy, the-world-owes-me-a-living-and-isn't-paying-up face.

Skiinggardner - liking your thinking but unfortunately I work in London Monday to Wednesday so different nursery on those days!

And now for the important bit - the day was not a complete failure. I did a later than usual pick-up and MET HER ON THE WAY BACK!!

There was no stand-off, but I did come across her just as I was coming out of a narrow bit into a wider bit so she did have to stop to wait for me - which judging by her expression did not improve her day. I gave her a bright smile and a cheery wave which was intended to convey "till next week, cowbag".

So not what everyone was hoping for, but not a complete fail!

Herhissyness - I don't do Twitter I'm afraid. I quite liked the idea of it but was massively put off when an entirely bonkers ex-housemate of mine started living her entire life by tweet and oversharing just a leeeetle bit.

You could put up signs in the manner of the local/AV elections or better yet like the ones outside churches.

Reverse now the end is nigh!

Oh no... I came on MN specifically to find out what happened! I can't wait til next week!

WickedWitchSouthWest · 21/04/2011 22:33

I love this thread more than is normal Grin

MadHairyMilkEggonEasterDay · 21/04/2011 22:36

Ha! Well done with the wave.

Marking place for next week.

I feel the timing of this should lead you to a kind of Royal Wedding street party-esque event, possibly with zombies, with bunting and flags and mugs and shit. All local Mners should join you with picnic blankets.

oooh just read the update! hehe, marvellous! Maybe at the end of it all, one day you will be friends and laugh together over a bottle of chablis at how unreasonably grumpy she was and how you showed her the light re. reversing for others!!! Grin

SillyDolly · 22/04/2011 09:05

Well done with the wave :) settling in with a good book and flask of tea for the next installment of Tales of The Passing Place!

SauvignonBlanche · 22/04/2011 09:36

Shoulddohousework · 22/04/2011 16:49

I think you should know that I have been lurking on this thread and now I have had to join MN just to find out what happens next! Cannot wait til next week! [busmile]

Ponks · 22/04/2011 18:26

This is a brilliant thread and am already looking forward to another standoff next week

The thought of herds of zombie mnetters doing the thriller dance while waiting for her to reverse is brilliant!

PigeonPie · 22/04/2011 19:35

I thought of this thread earlier today when leaving a carpark in the New Forest.

Because of all the cars parked everywhere th road was down to single file and virtually no visibility. I encountered a car coming in but thought 'no I won't reverse' but to my embarrasment it turned out there were another six cars behind him do I had to! oops!

I suppose the funny thing is there was only the one space we had just vacated available so they must all have had to turn round and try to get out again.

Am still Blush though.

chocolatehobnobs · 22/04/2011 20:20

You are totally in the right with this miserable BITCH (I mean lady) . I think your sign should read. 'Your turn to reverse, don't bother shaking your head at me I can wait all day' and then get out a tea, biscuits and newspaper.

knockinonyerdoor · 23/04/2011 23:54

Oh good I didn't miss it! Had arranged an early Easter break leaving first thing Thursday and coming back tonight, and I actually considered making up an excuse to leave later on Thursday so I could find out the results of the zombie-Disney-tea-and-biscuits standoff.

I think you should make the sign. Do it as a collage with leftover Easter egg wrappers. Grin
