EDCM Campaign against cuts to benefits paid to parents of disabled children

KateMumsnet · 12/12/2011 10:08

Hello

Today Every Disabled Child Matters, with whom we worked on our Respite Care Campaign, is calling on the government to rethink its decision to cut support for up to 170,000 families who have disabled children.

The Welfare Reform Bill proposes to cut benefits paid to low income or out of work families with disabled children by 50%. This amounts to a drop of £1400 per year - although these families often face higher basic costs than others, and may also find it harder to get employment which allows them to continue caring for their children.

If you'd like to write to the PM and ask him to reconsider, EDCM have made it easy to do so via this link. And don't forget to let us know what you think here on the thread.

Thanks

MNHQ

I've signed it. It's absolutely disgusting. Has this man and his government have no shame at all?

Angry

I saw this thread and emailed no10 this morning but didnt post on here until now.

I think others may have emailed but not posted too.

This affects me and my family directly and like a PP said I am doing an ostrich over all this, its very scary.

I cannot convey how much I fucking hate DC

I dont particularly like the people that voted for him either.

This is awful.

duende · 12/12/2011 22:40

sorry, that should be "do this man and his...."
I'm very tired Blush

at least bumping the thread.

OpinionatedMum · 12/12/2011 22:41

Mumsnetters very apathetic. It's this kind of attitude that lets these bastard politicians get away with this crap.

Just remember there will be no safety net to catch you when you fall off your high horses.

Merry fucking christmas.

AvadventKalendar · 12/12/2011 22:43

exactly Sad

Glitterknickaz · 12/12/2011 22:44

Well yes, because it's not them losing their child benefit is it so it's of no interest.

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 12/12/2011 22:47

what makes me angry really really angry is that anyone can be affected by this at anytime,
I don't get why people don't get it, they seem to be more worried about who wins the xfactor or something.
this is going to affect every family at sometime.

edam · 12/12/2011 22:48

I've signed the petition - it needs loads more signatures though...

CardyMow · 12/12/2011 22:49

So there isn't even a minimum level set that they can't cut below?! Because they are currently planning to cut the support for dc with disabilities to 50% of current levels.

So now, not only are they cutting support to adults with disabilities, now they are cutting the support for CHILDREN with disabilities - Who are probably the LEAST able to complain of ANYONE in Society.

Gotta Love ShineyDave and his band of Merry heartless bastards men.

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 12/12/2011 22:50

I wonder what they are going to do next, build big buildings to put all these scroungers in, so they are hidden away

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 12/12/2011 22:52

what a shame mn hq couldn't have at least helped by putting this in discussion of the day.

coppertop · 12/12/2011 23:16

I didn't see this thread earlier. Has it only just been stickied?

I've e-mailed too. Targeting disabled children must surely be the lowest of the low.

GeekLove · 12/12/2011 23:50

Signed and tweeted. This benefit cut is small beer compared to tax loopholes. Why can't we close those.
Oh no! We can't do that it would be taxing the rich!

giraffesCantDanceAtXmasParties · 13/12/2011 00:01

fucking terrifble

latedeveloper · 13/12/2011 00:20

signed and sent. don't honestly think it will change anything at this stage but could not pass this by even if there is the faintest chance of reversing the policy.
I have a disabled dc but currently don't claim any special benefits as am fortunate enough to be able to work (not even DLA although apparently entitled).

I'm lucky now but if I did lose my job it would be difficult to find another sufficiently flexible job that would allow me time off for appts etc while paying me enough to pay for childcare etc.

Dillydaydreaming · 13/12/2011 00:32

@conservatives So it's okay to let Vodafone off their £4.8b tax bill but not okay to support disabled children. Got it! %23allinthistogether

MayaAngelCool · 13/12/2011 01:43

Marking my place.

KateMiddlet0n · 13/12/2011 02:15

Lots of retweets on Twitter.

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas · 13/12/2011 06:23

Signed this yesterday, also the time-limiting of ESA (oh I'm so looking forward to June when I don't get ESA anymore) Hmm.

Defiitely all check out the too many cuts blog linked up there ^. Some fantastic writing on there that helps me understand the politics behind the mess that they will be making for the people who have the fewest options to boost their income in other ways :(

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 13/12/2011 08:30

more people need to be aware of this and sign

DutchOma · 13/12/2011 08:54

This is what I have posted to our MP Michael Ellis. I have copied it to our previous MP who now works for the Church of England.

Dear Michael,

I am one of your constituents and have just been made aware of the plan to cut benefits to families with disabled children in half.

Of course this is a desperate plan and I would ask you to make sure that this policy will not be put in place.

I am in the fortunate position not to have a disabled child, but I do know of many people who have. Their life is hard enough even if they do have the extra money to cope with extra travel, heating and the myriad other things that come with disability.

I am pretty sure that you do not want your government to be so callous as to see this put into practice.

Thank you

Hope it helps

KateMiddlet0n · 13/12/2011 08:55

Little bump

Bramshott · 13/12/2011 09:09

I emailed this yesterday, but I must admit to being a little unclear on WHAT is being cut by 50%. Is it DLA? Mobility? Can anyone fill me in?

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 09:09

Does Every Disabled Child Matter?

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 09:10

Bramshott it is the disabled child element of Child Tax Credits that is being cut in half for all children awarded middle rate care Disability Living Allowance.
