EDCM Campaign against cuts to benefits paid to parents of disabled children

Hello

Today Every Disabled Child Matters, with whom we worked on our Respite Care Campaign, is calling on the government to rethink its decision to cut support for up to 170,000 families who have disabled children.

The Welfare Reform Bill proposes to cut benefits paid to low income or out of work families with disabled children by 50%. This amounts to a drop of £1400 per year - although these families often face higher basic costs than others, and may also find it harder to get employment which allows them to continue caring for their children.

If you'd like to write to the PM and ask him to reconsider, EDCM have made it easy to do so via this link. And don't forget to let us know what you think here on the thread.

Thanks

They are going to try and overturn but it's a great leap. however still worth remembering this does not affect:

limiting it to one disabled child per family.

limiting carer's allowance to those receiving HR DLA so cutting out probably the majority of claimants now and requiring them to work even if no childcare available

cutting child hours remission off at 12 even in areas like mine where there is no childcare for over 12's and for children with MR care needs so creating a choice between 35 hours (less for single aprents), starvation without income or having another baby. Bit of an own goal that last one!

Cutting DLA and ESA down and not covering someone in need of constant supervision becuase obviously someone needing constant supervision can work- well so ESA say now anyway.

ESA wills till be time limited to 'not less than two years'- so WILL still affect patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses, even if not so many now.

It's a massive success but for those of us who do a little disability advocacy, the shite still awaits!

Peachy · 12/01/2012 13:12

Oh sorry- lst point meant to say- not cancer patients but people with similar illnesses: so Aids, etc- how is that OK?

Buggered that up sorry- bit stressed about ds4, never mind.

Government may seek to overturn on financial grounds

molepom · 12/01/2012 14:51

Freud already got one reform passed dispite it being voted to be amended last night.

The reform that disabled children can not apply for ESA was overturned by HOL originally but then by......

him forcing another vote late at night after most of the orginal voters left the building it was passed through! He tried that stunt with the other reforms but was called up on it and has now put the House Of Lords into disripute by his actions.

The sneeky, slimy, dispicable excuse for a human.

Peachy · 12/01/2012 15:01

Bastard

Or as they call him on twitter now, Lord fraud

molepom · 12/01/2012 15:40

molepom · 12/01/2012 21:50

Which one? You have posted a page full of them.

saralyn · 12/01/2012 22:15

Good summary by journalist Polly Toynbee in the Guardian:
www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jan/12/welfare-cuts-cameron

Might be handy to give to people who don't quite understand what the cuts mean.

rhuhama · 12/01/2012 22:40

Sorry this one epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/20968

molepom · 12/01/2012 22:42

Brilliant, thank you x

molepom · 13/01/2012 10:03

Who's going to sign it today?

molepom · 13/01/2012 13:59

No-one?

Well what if I told you that DLA claims can now be cancelled without you knowing and without evidence?

here

Still want to ignore the petition?

Sevenfold · 13/01/2012 16:07

175 posts in a day about CB, yet we still have to bump this, disgusting

Sevenfold · 13/01/2012 16:15

I am so pissed of with Mn and this.
why wasn't this pushed more, why doesn't it get the response that a benefit cut that only affects people on a pretty good wage gets loads of OMG how ill we cope posts.
and this we have ot beg Angry

molepom · 13/01/2012 16:39

I wish I never bloody posted that link on the CB re think now. The attitudes on MN and lack of support has not shown MN in a good light as far as I am concerned.

molepom · 13/01/2012 16:41

It doesnt help that it's hidden up here in Campagins either and to start more threads on it means breaking the rules.

molepom · 14/01/2012 08:50

Bump

molepom · 15/01/2012 10:56

bump to keep in active convos

threefeethighandrising · 15/01/2012 21:04

bump :)

SuePurblybilt · 17/01/2012 20:48

Bumping it up.
Is there another thread with a summary of the action in the Lords so far?

molepom · 17/01/2012 20:57

We lost by 16 votes. Changes are going ahead but with a few concessions - can't remember what they are right now. Too upset.

Will let you know tomorrow, right now just need some entertainment.

SuePurblybilt · 17/01/2012 21:18

Sad. I'm following the Guardian Liveblog but the latest I understood was that the proposal to pilot/delay PIP was the one defeated.

I don't blame you molepom

molepom · 17/01/2012 21:33

That's the one.

He was made almost forced to back down on a couple of things and make clearer on a few points for the new assessments and who's doing them. That's all I can remember.

SuePurblybilt · 17/01/2012 21:36

The Sad face was at the outcome btw, not at you coming back tomorrow Grin
