EDCM Campaign against cuts to benefits paid to parents of disabled children

Hello

Today Every Disabled Child Matters, with whom we worked on our Respite Care Campaign, is calling on the government to rethink its decision to cut support for up to 170,000 families who have disabled children.

The Welfare Reform Bill proposes to cut benefits paid to low income or out of work families with disabled children by 50%. This amounts to a drop of £1400 per year - although these families often face higher basic costs than others, and may also find it harder to get employment which allows them to continue caring for their children.

If you'd like to write to the PM and ask him to reconsider, EDCM have made it easy to do so via this link. And don't forget to let us know what you think here on the thread.

Thanks

MNHQ

Dillydaydreaming · 16/12/2011 19:07

My lovely niece is tweeting and texting this all over the place.

I dont know if it's too late but I got a response back from my MP. He said in his email to me that he is going to look into our complaints about it, look into the policies themselves and will then email me what he makes of it, clear up any thing we are not sure about and will question those who know more about it to make things simpler and easier for us to understand and how the changes may affect us. He also said that because of the time it's going to take to look into it that he will email me in the New Year.

I also sent him the link to this thread .

Your MP sounds very promising, fingers crossed...

CardyMow · 17/12/2011 18:15

Bump for the evening crowd, to keep in Active Convo's.

colditz · 17/12/2011 22:44

When's the next election?

KatieMistletoe · 17/12/2011 22:55

Not for at another three years at least. Unless the ConDems split before then. They possibly could over Europe but doubt they will over the cuts.

molepomandmistletoe · 18/12/2011 18:43

Bump.

'So far 3645 people have taken this action.'

Really? Is that all? Oh god, can we all please pass this on so as many people as possible send an email to David Cameron?

I know we're all busy with Christmas and kids off school, etc...but in a couple of years there'll be less money for Christmas, respite, activities, transport, services, etc. than there is now Sad

Stopping now before I get too emotional.

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 18/12/2011 21:58

shocked that so few have signed, but grateful to those who have,
mn is weird , 100's of posts about a new button on mn, yet something like this is over looked. yet it will affect everyone at sometime

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/12/2011 09:15

Bump.

AvadventKalendar · 19/12/2011 13:18

I'm not affected as I have no children with disabilities but as someone who was previously fit and healthy this year I have suddenly and out of my control become disabled. It can happen to ANYONE, man woman or child.

Please sign Thanks

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 19/12/2011 16:10

perhaps if this thread had a better name, and pretended to be a petition about the silly FB like button, people might care
they can get their knickers in a twist over something that silly, but this which is actually a threat to lief(yes people will be driven to despair by this) they ignore or walk by

CardyMow · 19/12/2011 19:08

Bump.

Dillydaydreaming · 19/12/2011 19:23

It's depressing and shows just how little people really care about others. Sad Sad

AvadventKalendar · 20/12/2011 08:13

Just bumping this worthwhile cause Xmas Smile

AvadventKalendar · 20/12/2011 14:31

I just asked this on the Gransnet webchat with Vince Cable.

AvadaKedavra

Has Mr Cable heard of the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign against 50% cuts to the Tax credits enhancements for disabled children that the Government is proposing/has proposed which Mumsnet is also supporting?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_campaigns/1361867-Cuts-to-benefits-paid-to-families-with-disabled-children-what-do-you-think?pg=1

What are your thoughts on this matter?

I think it is very low to sneak in a cut like that to the absolutely most vulnerable people in society, who cannot fight back.

Also what are your thoughts on the fact that Mr Cameron in PMQs last week lied about the cuts saying there would be none?

Thank you for your time.

Vince Cable's answer....

I don't know the answer to your question, without checking, but I am sure my colleagues wouldn't knowingly take steps which damaged disabled children. I'll raise it with colleagues.

My answer to that?

Hmm
deepandcrispandsevenfold · 20/12/2011 14:48

"I don't know the answer to your question, without checking, but I am sure my colleagues wouldn't knowingly take steps which damaged disabled children. I'll raise it with colleagues."

he really said that Xmas Shock scarey when people who have such power, seem to suggest they don't know that the cuts are targeting the disabled

molepomandmistletoe · 20/12/2011 15:02

Lets just hope that he actually does do something about it, or at the very least, let more MP's know about it. I think it is very suspect though that a large majority of MP know nothing about this. They must know something.

Peachy · 20/12/2011 15:11

How can allowing those of us withtwo or more disablede children only to get the help for one of them after 2013 not damagiong to us? Having gone from 1 to 2 and now maybe 3 disabled children (first two within 6 months admittedly) the psychological and practical effetcs (we have 4 children at 4 different schools!) has been huge, and life has become more complex and RL harder to tap in to with each diagnosis.

Peachy · 20/12/2011 15:13

Gosh that hardly makes sense! Further evidence that I need sleep and that right now I'd make a useless employee!

AvadventKalendar · 20/12/2011 19:57

Bumping up.
