Stop the Abolition of DLA

Glitterknickaz · 16/01/2011 13:19

The government are proposing to get rid of DLA in favour of PIP. full consultation here

Riven started a fantastic thread in Chat with the very pertinent point that this applies to everyone, that every one of us could be just one step from disability themselves.

There is NOTHING in the media about this. These proposals could mean poverty for the disabled and their families in this country. It could leave some in residential care completely isolated from their families and support networks through the removal of the mobility component.

My family has already been hit three times through the NHS, education and aiming high, via the cuts, if they now remove the money from our pockets we are going to be in a heat or eat situation.

Please MNHQ do something, as many are oblivious to these proposals and what they will mean, including those who themselves already claim DLA.

Will do - thanks for the link. My MP will be getting sick of hearing from me! Before the election he wrote back a very nice letter about support for research into my illness. Since the election, not even an acknowledgment to anything about DLA. One less vote for him next time.

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 07:17

I know it is frustrating.

You know, when I wrote my blog post about R last week, I got over 500 hits.

The DLA blog post had 65 hits.

Now, I don't normally have 500 hits for a post, but do regularly get at least 100 - 150 hits.

It just feels like there is so little popular support

eatyourveg · 26/01/2011 07:24

Early Day Motion on DLA tabled yesterday. See here

Glitterknickaz · 26/01/2011 08:37

Have sent that to Francis Maude. I can't see him going against his own party policy though Sad despite his lies to me before the election.

No reply yet from my MP. I can't say I'm particularly surprised, although in fairness they would only have received the e-mail yesterday.

Rhydian · 26/01/2011 10:27

Who is your MP?

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 10:30

Bumping this. Thanks for your blog link MmeLindt - I am trying to write my response to the consultation and without the blogs it would be almost impossible............

[grateful icon]

Spoke to a friend yesterday who gets DLA. She had not heard of the proposals so there will be so many out there who just do not know what is going on.

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 10:33

I spoke to my Mum yesterday, Poppy, and she is very "Oh, well if it happens, it happens, nothing we can do about it."

They are saving up to replace their boiler this year. I have told them to save up in case they lose DLA so that they can at least buy an old banger (he has a mobility car) but they are sticking their heads in the sand.

They will manage without a car, if they have to but will have to rely on my brother helping them more.

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 10:35

No reply from my MP (or rather my parents) but he is a Labour MP so hopefully sympathetic to the cause.

rhuhama · 26/01/2011 10:51

I see the daily mail are choosing to attack the sick and disabled with their lies about ESA. Chris Grayling has been warned before about giving false statistics but it seems that anyone claiming benefits is now an official scrounger it does not seem to matter that they have paid into the system and are only claiming due to ill health.

People may not realise it but this will soon affect every family in the UK. After all look around your own relations do you too not have some one who is ill or disabled. Or by the grace if God could be.

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 10:56

Need a new boiler?

Ask warmfront. They provide grants for homeonwners and tenants on low incomes or disabled.

Well they did.

They are being cut too.

As for the "nothing we can do about it", well I am having to build a mental barrier to that now.
However the EDM gave me some joy, as I could at least say "It wont change anything? Really? Then where has the EDM come from?"

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 11:00

Hossylass
I will enquire about that, thank you.

That DM article is horrible. And the problem is that so many see that as a reason to cut DLA because they lump DLA with Incapacity.

Does anyone have figures to dispute that? I cannot believe it is true.

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 11:11

MmeLindt

Yes there are figures, but there really is no point.

For five years now the media have targetted the "non-economic", single parents, stay at home mums on low incomes, unemployed and disabled.
In their minds they are ALL scroungers.

And they will never admit that there is a difference between the benefits.
No point in telling them that people work on DLA, that children and retired peopel get DLA.
DLA means to most people IB.
Even MP's have confused this.

The five years of propaganda have brainwashed the public into believing everything they say.

I haven't seen the DM article, but the Express article is practically word for word what the DM printed last year, just with the updated figures.

Full Facts, a site dedicated to challenging things like this, have already shown that the DM is wrong. It has also tackled some MP's for using the wrong data.

I, and others have complained to the PCC about the DM, but sadly the PCC is run to protect itself, i.e. the press, not protect the people who complain to it.

You can complain to the EHRC, (European Human Rights Commission). I did on the grounds that the media are harrassing certain groups, and this is inciting hatred.

To me it borders on hate crime and incitement to hate crime.

judyblueeyes3 · 26/01/2011 11:56

Here's the link to the broken of britain blog for the EDM info -

thebrokenofbritain.blogspot.com/

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 11:59

If you want to see if your MP has signed the EDM then go to edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=42351&SESSION=905

Hope that works....

judyblueeyes3 · 26/01/2011 12:07

Are people really this unconcerned and apathetic about our plight? HOW are we going to get people to take notice of what's happening??? I feel we have got to think outside the box!!!!

Does anyone on Mumsnet know any celebrity types who could be contacted? Or know anyone who does? Someone in television or the music industry or films? It's sad but true that things only really make the headlines if someone famous gets involved. Any ideas?

Glitterknickaz · 26/01/2011 12:10

I know that Rosa Monckton does great stuff about the disabled and carers but I'm not sure how she'd feel to be associated with something that would be considered as political as this.

OP posts:
Hossylass · 26/01/2011 12:14

Ed Milliband, on PMQ's, has just told the PM he is arrogant and doesn't have an idea of how most of the people of this country live, and what they feel.

Yep, Ed, whatever my political leanings, I agree.

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 12:16

Johann Hari may be good - just been reading his excellent article on care homes for the elderly

My mother mentioned that Fiona Phillips has been commenting on the Respite issue

Glitterknickaz · 26/01/2011 12:18

She also has links with the labour party

OP posts:
Hossylass · 26/01/2011 12:23

Judy, people are not just unconcerned and apathetic.

They actively despise us now, mainly due to a campaign of hate against all benefit recipients by the media.

People believe this. They believed that Iraq could bomb us in 40 minutes.
They believe all sorts of bullshit if they are fed it long enough and often enough.

Back to PMQ's.
The PM has just actually stated that they are standing by the decision on removing DLA mobility from residential homes as he states that they are on par with hospitals.
Then moves on.

Un-fucking-believable.

Glitterknickaz · 26/01/2011 12:26

So those in resi don't need to get to hospital appointments then? Cos the school/home doesn't take them.... twat

He's repeated this non-answer so many times. Is it beyond the wit of just one MP to press him on it and point out that residental homes are not the same as hospital - and that anyway withdrawing the DLA from those staying in hospital for more than a set amount of days in a year is itself a policy that should be looked into.

Glitterknickaz · 26/01/2011 13:05

Hang on.... this isn't actually a 'formal' MN campaign at all is it?
