Stop the Abolition of DLA

The government are proposing to get rid of DLA in favour of PIP. full consultation here

Riven started a fantastic thread in Chat with the very pertinent point that this applies to everyone, that every one of us could be just one step from disability themselves.

There is NOTHING in the media about this. These proposals could mean poverty for the disabled and their families in this country. It could leave some in residential care completely isolated from their families and support networks through the removal of the mobility component.

My family has already been hit three times through the NHS, education and aiming high, via the cuts, if they now remove the money from our pockets we are going to be in a heat or eat situation.

Please MNHQ do something, as many are oblivious to these proposals and what they will mean, including those who themselves already claim DLA.

I dont know about "formal".

I originally thought that the "formal" bit was about service cuts, but people have realised that to get the services you need DLA to assist in proving you need the services.

And that disabled parents and parents of disabled children will find they need more services, not less, if DLA is reduced.

I think that is the bottom line - less DLA and less services when the need will increase.

If they cut my DLA I will need to go cap in hand to social services for the help I currently pay for myself.

This means I will be taking it away from other people should I get it.

Its about all the cuts, not just social care cuts, as they are all interlinked.

Radio 4's programme You and Yours today - first item is about changes to the Work Capability Assessment and ATOS.

Professor Harrington and Chris Grayling interviewed. Government are implementing changes recommended by Labour's 'internal review' before Harrington's recommendations even begin, even though 42 charities say NO! Even Harrington says 'timing is far from perfect'!

Have a listen here -

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00xw14z/You_and_Yours_26_01_2011

and then email the programme to tell them what you think!...!

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 15:04

I keep missing these although have the radio burbling in the back ground whilst I work......

Has Women's Hour covered the DLA proposals? Most carers are women and presumably at least half those with disabilities themselves are female........

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 15:06

I guess it would at this point be a good idea to ask MNHQ if they wish to get more involved, and to which level.

bullet234 · 26/01/2011 15:09

Are the statistics from ATOS by any chance? ATOS who told an employee of the DWP that she was unfit to work due to her ME and gtherefore made her redundant (ATOS does the medical/health checks for the DWP), but who then said she was fit for work when she tried to claim ESA? Hmm.

judyblueeyes3 · 26/01/2011 15:23

poppyknot -

i don't know if Womans Hour have done anything about DLA, but now that the PM has just said they are standing by their proposal to cut DLA for people is care homes, it's not looking good and I think WH would be interested! Especially from the standpoint of Carers - you could get in touch about it here -

www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/contact/email.shtml

ThisIsANiceCage · 26/01/2011 15:32

poppyknot Women's Hour's a brilliant idea. And as well as raising it as an issue worth discussing, could we brief them with stats and on the silly things being said at PMQs (a residential home is the same as hosp, ffs)?

I'm not up for talking to anyone right now, but could help you round up briefing material if necess.

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 15:33

Its Ian Duncan Smith behind most of this.
He was the one that blamed the economically in active for the downfall of the country.

And he is in charge of the DWP, the department that is supposed to provide for the economically inactive through welfare payments.

He wants to make a name for himself as the man who saved the country.

I'm not sure that history will record it that way.

More the man who put the c*nt in country, and took the fair out of welfare.

ThisIsANiceCage · 26/01/2011 15:44

Grin at cunt in country.

It's not just IDS, tho, a lot of this stuff was laid out by David Freud under the previous govt - and I noticed Clegg sounding pretty on-message about work as a cure for disability before the elections.

I'm not being party-political, just trying to make sure we don't raise false hopes by thinking Some Other Lot are better. Feel like I'm living in a historical reconstruction - not least because the political parties are so close you can't get a cigarette paper between them and sod the akshul people.

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 15:48

ThisIsANiceCage - I am sure we could get something together! DC said the same thing at PMQ last week and possibly before that too. (Will check Hansard or whereever) The hospital thing was the original reasoning given by GO in the CSR so presumably they have to stick to it (for there is obviously no other reason).

Hossylass - apparently IDS wants to be seen as the next Beveridge.

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 15:53

In all honesty I have given up which party they purport to be in.

All I care about is how people are treated, today, tomorrow and in the future.

FraudyFreud has a past that is embarrassing - in fact if I had a past like that I would emigrate and change my name.

The man is a walking list of disasters, all of which cost money.

Freud, Purnell, Smith, Miller - all bloody fruitloops that ordinary society would steer clear of.

I am starting to wonder if they are not given the jobs in health, DWP, disability because they are already disliked, and it is a way of getting rid of them.

I can think of better ways...

Hossylass · 26/01/2011 15:58

The people we should be targetting are LD's who may dissent.
Swing enough of them over and it topples the coalition.

If this is all about work, then maybe Vince Cable can be asked how business is preparing to employ millions of disabled people, and what strategies has he put in place to facilitate this.

Just a thought ;)

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 16:05

Thanks for these, judyb.

Spot the differnce in these answers from DC at PMQ....

Disability living allowance is an important issue, and our intention is very clear: there should be a similar approach for people who are in hospital and for people who are in residential care homes. That is what we intend to do, and I will make sure that it happens.

26th JAn
I am grateful for my right hon. Friend?s question. The intention here is very clear: we want to ensure that the treatment of people in hospital is the same as the treatment of people in residential care homes in terms of the mobility component of DLA. That was behind the announcement we made, and that is what we want to make sure happens.

ThisIsANiceCage · 26/01/2011 16:06

Poppyknot and/or judy, are you up for making the pitch to WH?

I'll start rounding up stories from here and PMing people to ask permish to repeat them (I know they're already public, but will have to sort out the etiquette around this.)

Can't bring myself to listen to PMQs or You n Yours at the mo: have you got those covered so you know where you're heading?

Easiest on us if we know someone with all the stats and info already at their fingertips, who can be suggested as an interviewee for this.

Harder, we have to actually source and verify the stats. Confused

ThisIsANiceCage · 26/01/2011 16:08

Bollocks, I'm getting knackered and need to rest now. Sorry, back later.

Hopelesslydisorganised · 26/01/2011 16:09

My friend has just been dimmed fit for work by ATOS - she is so agoraphobic she cannot even get on a bus.

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 16:09

Reading these so starkly on the page makes it look even more outrageous in the single-minded way he is really saying. I am going to do it, there is nothing you can do about it. So there!

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 16:10

Judy, I will do it but can I PM you to throw about ideas etc.....

Rhydian · 26/01/2011 16:11

Response to those horrible Daily Express/Mail articles here.

judyblueeyes3 · 26/01/2011 16:23

rhydian -

Brilliant!!!!! :)

judyblueeyes3 · 26/01/2011 16:23

poppyknot - got to go and rest now, will check back later.

MmeLindt · 26/01/2011 16:24

Vic Derbyshire from BBC 5live is good for stories like this, particularly if you can get someone to talk to her about a RL case.

poppyknot · 26/01/2011 16:31

Thanks Judy, cage, Rhydian MmeLindt and all. I've got to go but will be back later.
