I've stopped going to the mother & baby sessions at my childrens centre partly because I was fed up with people (including the staff) looking at me with pity watching me struggle saying things like "I don't know how you manage with 2" yet offering no help.

People just don't think before they speak sometimes. The most insensitive comment I've had was "I don't know how I'd split my love" - what!!!! It's so horrible to imply that multiples are loved less than singletons or siblings of different ages, like you have a finite amount of love to give! However I think this comment really upset me as it actually struck a nerve - I have moments every day when I feel guilty I have to split my attention.

toomuchpink · 31/05/2012 20:26

You tube clip really funny.
"I don't know how you do it."
"Well, we've sound proofed a room and at night we lock them in it."
(Not really)

BonfireBaby · 31/05/2012 20:48

Ha ha love these. I have 19 nth old ID twin boys and have been asked numerous times 'are you sure that they are really identical?'. Yes and leave me alone please!

KateShmate · 31/05/2012 20:48

My GGG triplets are 3 this month - I constantly get comments along the lines of 'Wow, how did you manage to have 3 all so close in age?'

I've had the 'B.T.G.O.F' (Buy two ..)

'How do you cope with all 3?' - Havent reeeeally got that much choice! Grin

When they were babies, I often got a few 'Oooh twins, how lovely!' - it is pretty bloody obvious that there are 3 babies.. all in a row - how could you possible miss one?!

xkatyx · 31/05/2012 21:10

I must admit though before I has twins I didn't have a clue about "types" of twins I thought twins were just twins didn't know about ID or fractional nothing!! Do ignorance maybe?!

Also I was away in ore of them found them fascinating!! But it's just the norm now I have mine!!

But now I'm fascinated in triplets at how amazing/hard the pregnancy must of been etc!! It's hard enough with 2!!! And how feeding etc goes with 3!!

But it doesn't justify the rudeness at all I hate
comments is just as bad as saying " your child is awful if I had him/her I would kill myself" as it is about twins!!!

minesapintofwine · 01/06/2012 00:35

I dont mind the genuinely interested and well intentioned things people say. The one that makes me go Shock is three 'good' friends who I thought had been supportive to me for the last seven years of infertility all said, on seperate occasions, Oh they were IVF twins so not proper twins then. So a single IVF baby is not a proper baby then. This really upsets me and makes me feel invalid as a twin mum halfwits like that should really shut the fuck up I think. Was also royally Shock at the complete stranger (a twin granny) who pointed at my twins at the clinic and asked were they naturally conceived? to which I replied no IVF you nosy cow and she said, loudly, Oh not proper twins then like my naturally conceived grandkids. Or something like that. Now that is a stupid thing to say. So after these highly upsetting comments Ill take'double trouble'? anyday! I need Wine now.

Tortington · 01/06/2012 00:38

BG Twins = are they identicle?

THE most stupid

'oh you're so lucky, i would dream of having BG twins it must be amazing'

no love it basically means no sleep........for years

Mulsanne · 01/06/2012 00:52

My twins (non identical girls) are now 14 years old and I still get 'they don't look alike' - that's because they are not identical Hmm. Do twins run in your family and did you have ivf (no but it's none of your bloody business anyway)

noelstudios · 01/06/2012 11:22

I just get sick of people saying all the time, 'I don't know how you do it! I don't know how you do it!' - because we have to! And it is alright - and brilliant when it all works well.

What else am I going to do? Stop looking after them? Just opt out of being a twin mum?!

And also being told off by women for not dressing my girl in pink all the time.

Whoops - dtg has dtb in a headlock.... maybe I should put her in pink sometimes??

And also friends who call them 'the twins, the twins, the twins' - they have names!!! They'd hate it if I called they pfb 'your singleton' instead of their name!

MuckingFuddle · 01/06/2012 12:00

Ha yes I also hate "the twins" thing, I dont call my nephews the brothers or my friends dc's the brother and sister.

xkatyx · 01/06/2012 17:31

Like can they read each others minds, silly things like that, and the constant comparing .. Must be really hard!!!

Emphaticmaybe · 01/06/2012 17:49

Strangers telling me my twin daughters, ( up until they were about 8), must be identical, 'because they look the same' even when I'd explained the biology and pointed out they were definitely fraternal.

Strangers telling me now my 14 year old twin daughters, 'can't be twins they look so different' - you can't win,Smile

minipie · 01/06/2012 17:53

I don't have twins but these are hilarious - especially

"Are they twins?"
"yes"
"are they both yours"
"ye-es"

Grin
xkatyx · 01/06/2012 20:38

Ohhhh the worst for me was

"Awwww they are both lovely but this one is serenely more prettier "

RedBlanket · 01/06/2012 20:55

That YouTube video is every conversation I've ever had about mine

Someone once asked me how they were conceived, meaning IVF or not. I told her it was after we'd shagged twice in one night.

The most hurtful comment for me was A lady did the 'ooh twins, Do they they run the family, blah blah' routine, followed by 'well he's the good looking one'. I cried all the way home. Bitch.

pamdam · 01/06/2012 21:53

ahahah you're all soo funny :)
I got the same damn comments
going to the park, my 9 months old twins in the double buggy, pink and blue
"oooh are they twins?,
"ooh she's bigger"
"oooh 2 GIRLS, GORGEOUS"
I got a link for you guys, don't know if you ever watched this video:

beyoglu · 02/06/2012 09:34

"Are they identical?" Why don't you look at them for more than a second FFS. One has fair hair, the other dark brown! Also makes me laugh when people try and guess the gender and they always apologise for getting it wrong. It's fine, there aren't many gender cues on a 6 week old baby.

Yesterday someone in the park said I was awesome for being out at 6 weeks... a nice change from being told "oh, twins, you'll have your work cut out for you."

toomuchpink · 02/06/2012 21:23

I'm glad I'm not the only one irritated by 'I don't know how you do it.' I think it is meant to be a compliment, but maybe it comes over as 'your life is so much more difficult than mine.' On bad days I also think 'if you realise it is so hard, why don't you ask what you could do to help?'

On people calling them 'the twins' I was shocked to see people sending one birthday card to both twins at a recent birthday party. There are two separate people here guys, they just happened to have popped out at the same time.

Oh, how good it feels to moan. We should probably have a 'good things people say about twins' thread, but I am enjoying this too much.

mimiof3 · 02/06/2012 21:27

we had, several times:

"are they twins?"
"yes"
"identical?"
"no, boy/girl"
"yes, but are they identical?"
"no, there's a crucial difference between boys and girls"
"yes, but apart from that?"

What - they're identical in every aspect except one has dangly bits and one doesn't? How TF would that work?!?

MuckingFuddle · 02/06/2012 22:18

Ok - a nice one Smile I was very tired, balancing a shopping basket on pushchair - stocking up on coffee, calpol and teething powders. Feeling very soory for myself when a lovely couple stopped me and told me how beautiful my babies are and that they are a double blessing. As they walked away they said to each other - "Two babies - how wonderful" It made my day. Smile

This one is not a moany one but just plain odd - we were in Camden Market when a bloke walked over to me and said "Are they Twins?" "Yes" I said expecting the usual handsfull bla de da and then he asked if he could take their picture Shock I told him no and he looked really suprised - like I was out of order for not letting a stranger on the street photograph my children. Then walked away stopping only to turn and glare at me. Confused

minesapintofwine · 02/06/2012 23:53

mucking I honestly love all the nice things people say I dont get it when people moan about it if Im honest it can be a little irritating when people stick theyre heads in the pushchair without warning but I keep quiet as they mean well, I just dont understand the complaining bout nice and complimentary or merely joky and sociable comments Confused. The hurtful things people say though..(see previous) they really do hurt.

beyou ha ha when my twins were 3 months old a woman in a clothing shop told me I deserved a gold star well done you amazing mum of young twins you. Glowing with pride I passed this on to dh he said 'gold star? you love shopping?'. The thing I tell myself every day leave the house, have a life, dont give in, enjoy being an out and about mum no matter how many babies. Works for us! weve been EVERYWHERE. So keep at it hun it aint easy I know but so worth it (now where are those shops?)
