If you had a sum of money say 3k, what would you spend it on? Would you go on a luxury holiday or buy some nice furniture or some nice clothes. I've had a luxury holiday so I dont think I would spend it on another luxury holiday. I would buy some nice furniture and some nice clothes and maybe a few days away somewhere in Europe but I would not blow the lot on a luxury holiday. A three week holiday to Australia staying in a classy hotel would come to about 3k but if you've done it before then it's just a waste of money

If you have never look at prices of a flight and hotel to australia you will have no idea what you can pay and you will only assume that it costs a fortune. Because you don't know any difference. So do some research, and you might be quite surprised, i went to Adelaide and stayed in the ibis hotel, which was very nice. When I went to purse, I had the opportunity of staying with somebody, I know, but I didn't want, so I also stayed in an ibis.

id would fix the dent in my car someone did and didn’t leave note grrr!

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/09/2025 17:38

I would pay off any debt first. Then see how much I had left afterwards. Then I would see what needs repairing/replacing most urgently (if it isn't the car then it's usually the house or new specs).

A two-week stay at the Ibis Adelaide could cost approximately £800 to over £1,000,

I’ve never stayed at that Ibis, but have at many others so I suspect that wouldn’t be anyone’s idea of a classy hotel.

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/09/2025 17:53

I stayed in a hotel once and the windows were so dirty. I couldn't see out of them, but the ibis are spotlessly clean, lovely, friendly staff and good food.

Why would you wanta really inexpensive posh hotel? Anyway, because you won't be spending much time there. As you will be too busy going out and about sightseeing.

The whole lot would go on necessary house things, the list of which has been building up for years.

WTDress · 08/09/2025 18:10

That is my budget for a half term holiday. I’m holding off booking because although I have enough in savings, I’m reluctant to take that much out at the moment as we have work that is needed on the house.
So I would book the holiday if I had that money unexpectedly.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/09/2025 18:15

If I didn't have immediate need of it, I'd save until we did. We are notoriously boring financially though after years of instability.

Australia and a nice hotel. I have done that and had never been able to afford that before I came into some money so to me that was luxury. I grew up in a poverty stricken childhood and e couldn't afford to go abroad

I have recently returned from Australia. I paid 6k for my flight and £350 per night for a nice hotel. Absolutely no chance you can get a nice hotel for 3 weeks (or even 1 week) plus flights to Australia for 3k

Allthegoodhorses · 08/09/2025 19:04

Bless.. "classy hotel" and Ibis Adelaide should not be in the same sentence. I once stayed in an Ibis in Liverpool.. shudder. I think you need to rethink your use of the words classy and luxury.

She didn't. She went economy which currently on emirates is about 1300 for October dates and stayed in an Ibis hotel. I think the OP needs to reframe her words.. It was definitely not classy or luxury!

Did you not see my post which I took from the Internet. Flights for under1k. And I dont know what hotels you stay in but the ibis are nice hotels. Not luxury but I'd rather stay in an ibis and have more spending money than pay for a swish hotel that I am hardly going to be in because I'm out exploring the country. In Canada I stayed in a fancy massive hotel with two bars and a hotel shop and a jacuzzi and gym and I hated it.

I did take your quote from your OP where you mentioned that an ibis was a classy hotel

PerkyOchrePeer · 08/09/2025 19:40

I never said it was classy. It's an average hotel, but very nice. All the same I give up. I can't be bothered anymore.

I would spend a grand buying gold coins as a investment.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 09/09/2025 05:47

It depends. I would need to save it as we both have savings and save regularly.
If probably either
spend on a fab holiday
Use for house decor ( our bedroom needs a refresh)
Pay towards mortgage as trying to pay off earlier ( was late 30s when we got it)

Not fussed about expensive clothes, bags etc.

Op I wouldn’t go searching for things to buy. Save it- the need to spend it will come soon enough.
I’ve stayed in some lovely ibis hotels - the one in Geneva is great. Bruges not so much

I dont look for things to buy. I just walked past the charity shop and saw the dress in the window and went in. It was a whistles dress and a bargain. The only other thing I did was get a decorator to paint my hallway which badly needed doing so I am not frittering money away needlessly. Apart from the second hand dress, I hadn't bought clothes for 6 months

I would consider using savings on private health care. I am going through a health issue and the NHS is not helping. The longer this goes on, the more concerned I get and I have asked for help but I feel ignored

Luxury insofar as its australia and very far away and it's 23 hours to get there and not many people I know go there

@PerkyOchrePeer did you want advice at all or were you just wanting to talk about how to spend 3K? By all means spend it how you like you don’t need us to validate anything for you.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/09/2025 15:24

being far away doesn't make it luxury ffs!
