Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free, i.e. no monthly fee and no charge to add money on) pre loaded card I can get for my 8 year old please?

If you have a NatWest account then Rooster is free. I would recommend. Even if you open a NW account now then I think you can get it for free. The app is good

not really a preloaded debit but the Kite account by starling is linked to your account so you get to oversee all spending:
