Someone I work with claiming maternity pay but also working self employed

So a girl who works with me is currently on maternity leave receiving maternity pay from work. She was also a self employed wedding photographer as well.

Now she’s doing on average 1- 2 weddings a week whilst on maternity leave from where we work supposedly because she is able fit more in now.

Is this even allowed? I thought you couldn’t work whilst on maternity leave

Does her maternity pay come out of your pocket?

I believe you can work self employed whilst on maternity leave and claiming maternity pay from an employer.

Yes, yes you can. You are not permitted to work in the first six weeks, but most of us who like to eat will do what we need to survive. She’s luck to be available to do that.

I did some contract hours during maternity leave. I just waited until maternity leave was over to send invoice. Not sure it's totally wrong or not, but maternity pay wasn't good and was able to do a few hours when the baby was asleep with dh and I felt well able.
It was a few years back and if I hadn't, we would have struggled to buy our current house, so in the long run, it was the right thing to do. Morally or ethically, not sure.

She's on maternity leave from one job but not the other. Simples. MYOB

Another fun fact is that if you have two jobs you can get two lots of SMP…it was great 🙌 not a lot of people know this so I like to spread the word!

Never claimed it affected me personally. Just was wondering where the law stood on this. Wow you lot are catty 🙈. Pretty sure she doesn’t need it financially her maternity pay alone will be £2000 a month and she charges almost that for a wedding. Her husband is also a solicitor

It seems she was already self-employed as well as being an employee anyway, so what's the issue?

Thing is if she's on maternity she is entitled to the pay whether she's doing a side hustle or making money selling shit at a car boot sale. She is also entitled to it even if it's loads of money or her husband is a millionaire.
