Someone I work with claiming maternity pay but also working self employed

So a girl who works with me is currently on maternity leave receiving maternity pay from work. She was also a self employed wedding photographer as well.

Now she’s doing on average 1- 2 weddings a week whilst on maternity leave from where we work supposedly because she is able fit more in now.

Is this even allowed? I thought you couldn’t work whilst on maternity leave

Shes charging almost £2000 for a wedding and doing 1-2 a week? Well I am jealous 😂. * heads off to google ‘how to become a wedding photographer’*

Yes that’s the going rate around here

Mind your own business is my advice.

Letsgotitans · 30/07/2024 18:18

Yes employed women are allowed to do self employed work but self employed women aren't allowed to do any work, another way the government shows they for some reason despise self employed people

I was just genuinely wondering if it was allowed

Ask her husband, he should know the law if he's a solicitor

bananamum13 · 30/07/2024 18:19

Perfectly legal.

3luckystars · 30/07/2024 18:19

I didn’t know it was allowed either

Never claimed it affected me personally. Just was wondering where the law stood on this. Wow you lot are catty 🙈. Pretty sure she doesn’t need it financially her maternity pay alone will be £2000 a month and she charges almost that for a wedding. Her husband is also a solicitor

Jealous much?
Omg.

ToffeeSquirrels · 30/07/2024 18:45

Wind yer neck in OP.

bluebird3 · 30/07/2024 19:01

Yes you are allowed to do this. I believe the rule is you can work self employed as long as you were doing it before mat leave started. As in you can't be on mat leave and then take up a new self employed job during mat leave. I did this as worked 3 days/week employed and 2 days self employed before going on mat leave. I began the self employed work again 6m into mat leave but didn't go back to my employed work until 1 year.

stayathomer · 30/07/2024 19:02

As long as she does her taxes I’d assume it would be

QforCucumber · 30/07/2024 19:04

Google would have told you that this is absolutely allowed :)

Lilysgoneshopping · 30/07/2024 19:06

Lots of people have side hustles. As long as she's declaring it to the tax man I see no issue with it

MelainesLaugh · 30/07/2024 19:06

You can also be off sick from an employed job but able to do a self employed one. As long as the reason for being off sick doesn’t cover both. For example if your employed job is lugging heavy boxes around and you hurt your back so can’t lift, you can go off sick. But your self employed job is web editing you could legally do that while off sick from the other one.

HaveYouSeenRain · 30/07/2024 19:09

Seriously mind your own business.

OP of course knows every single detail of how much she works, how much she charges, and that she shouldn’t need to work bc it’s well known that mat pay is tons and children don’t cost any money!

Startingagainandagain · 30/07/2024 19:11

How do you know so much about her life outside work?

Are you literally stalking her on social media?

That's really inappropriate...

Her side hustle is none of your business.

momager1 · 30/07/2024 19:12

good for her! mind your own!! Maybe she gets this opportunity because her husband watches the baby whilst she goes and does it, and god knows every single penny in the bank really helps when she goes back to "job" and has to pay childcare.

I know. It’s scary how overinvested and jealous some people are.

To be fair, your comments about the husbands job, their financial status and what she charges are very catty to the point you sound like a very bitter and unhappy person. Try and find something nice in your life dear.

You sound nasty OP. Leave the woman alone.

dementedpixie · 30/07/2024 19:31

It is perfectly legal to do self employed work while on maternity leave.

And if you have 2 employers you can also get statutory Maternity pay from both and have different maternity leave periods too.

titchy · 30/07/2024 19:36

I was just genuinely wondering if it was allowed

So why didn't you google it? Or ask on MN without adding all the fluff about her earning £2k a month and having a solicitor dh - obviously implying she doesn't deserve it and should know her place chained to the sink
