PREMIUM BONDS. APRIL 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/04/2024 15:09

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1860 in prizes

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,860

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 3 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

White - main one with info 😄😄😄

Blue - those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

But I won last month and didn't show anything the day before so not sure it shows for all

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

I had bonds bought for me in 1973 when born but I cashed them in as didn't know then you can ask for old ones not to be used

I didn't know you could ask them not to cash your old bonds in 😔

I have some that my grandmother
gave me when I was born and was quite upset that when I recently cashed some bonds in and they used up my oldest bonds first.

@Jellybean85 How exciting! Really hope that you are a big winner 🤞🏻

westisbest1982 · 01/05/2024 14:20

Congratulations @Jellybean85 🍾. Any nice plans for that £5K or is it all still sinking in?

SootikinSweep · 01/05/2024 14:21

westisbest1982 · 01/05/2024 08:55

The holdings on the list are what were eligible.

I don’t think they are! Dd was lucky to win £1000 the other month on £3000 of bond entries but she’d upped her holdings that month to £4000. It was a massive surprise when she won as I’d previously dismissed any big wins that month as I was assuming it would be listed at the former figure that entered the draw.

SootikinSweep · 01/05/2024 14:22

So her total holdings were listed as £4000 even though she’d only had £3000 of bonds entered.

Jellybean85 · 01/05/2024 14:25

Thanks all. I can confirm it's total holdings listed not eligible holdings. I added £25 last week that wasn't eligible but showed in the total.

We have some big repairs coming up that we were going to have to raid our modest savings in PB to fund and now we're paid for !! Also a nice meal out this weekend 🎉

We remortgaged recently and there was a random month where the mortgage was way lower than normal as it changed over. I had 500 spare and dithered over what to do but stuck it in PB and it seems it won!!!

How wonderful! Congratulations.

so i have the list of my bonds which are for example

A1234567890 to A1234569000

do I have to look through all the bonds to see if mine appear?

Winning Bond NO.
400DT748739
400PJ306291
401TJ413151
401XJ119706
406GX900978

If you download the excel file rather than just look on the webpage, I tend to sort it by area, then total holding, then bond number. I think that's how I sort it anyway... every month I get confused with how to do it but manage to work it out Grin

Then I just scroll to my area and the right holding amount, and check the remaining bond numbers with mine. I have about 18 different 'batches' of bond numbers and it still only takes me a couple of mins to scan through and be disappointed check them all, because sorting by area and holding first, and then by bond number takes a lot of the work out of it.

My sister and I both thought we had old premium bonds since we are kids, but when our parents passed away there was no paperwork for them.

If I still had bonds would they automatically be added to the account I now have or do you have to do a search for them?

You have to contact them but I did it without knowing the old address or numbers and having changed name and they found it

happinessischocolate · 01/05/2024 14:54

Thanks @Jellybean85 I'll have a look

omega4ever · 01/05/2024 15:12

@Jellybean85 so pleased for you !!! Mucho congrats and have a lovely meal out!

Can I ask a really basic question? Been following this thread for a couple of days, just seen someone said you have to be in for a whole month to be in the draw. So if I buy some bonds today (I don't currently have any) would I be in for May? And is it possible eg can I open an account today? TIA

Eaumyword · 01/05/2024 15:27

No big wins here as per usual, lol!

chimichangaz · 01/05/2024 15:31

Just logged onto the website and answered my own question.....takes 7-10 working days to open. So I have a little time to think about how much to invest!

It's a whole calender month, not 30/31 days. So anything in your account by May 31 (though I'd not cut it quite that close) would sit dormant in June and then be eligible for the July draw.

FiveShelties · 01/05/2024 15:45

If you won last month you should definitely have a picture

Sorry, but again I definitely do not have a picture and won 200.

Yes you can open an account now but you wouldn’t be eligible until July.

What does this mean?

Clean the house incase agent million calls

EatenEasterChocsAlready · 01/05/2024 16:50

@JellyBeanFactory.. How wonderful!! A live lucky winner.... Enjoy the weekend, what a timely treat.

EatenEasterChocsAlready · 01/05/2024 16:53

@Jellybean85 so they found your old bond just thru dob and name

Flin · 01/05/2024 17:00

If you are searching the spreadsheet for winning bond numbers, anyone using a laptop can just do CTRL F and type in the first few digits of bond number and see if it comes up. If you have several batches of numbers just do one search for each batch. It takes me about 30 seconds to check all mine. You don't need to search by area and total holding etc.

I'm aware many people aren't using a laptop, so this only applies to those who are! Hope it helps someone. Good luck all for tomorrow!

TreadSter · 01/05/2024 17:32

has anyone got anything pending in their navy blue app yet? Can’t remember when that usually appears
