PREMIUM BONDS. APRIL 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/04/2024 15:09

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1860 in prizes

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,860

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 3 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

White - main one with info 😄😄😄

Blue - those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

But I won last month and didn't show anything the day before so not sure it shows for all

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

I need your luck. If I remember you have a similar amount to me ( lower end anyway. I’m on 4k)
Congratulations

Yes we have similar amounts - I’m under £4k now due to raiding pb

I know it's a controversial view, but I am wondering whether there's something to having a large block versus lots of small amounts.....

I had about £9k made up of £25s and £50s. I hadn't won anything since the summer, so i withdrew it all in January and got one large block. The first month it was eligible was March and I won £100. April was the second month and I've just won another £100.

Of course it's all luck but it makes me wonder, as I seem to do better when the same amount is in one lump rather than scattered.

Ya I did an eggsperiment and am feeling the same way.

My first ever win - £25! I am chuffed!
I only have £400 (it was £600 last month but took £200 out). I started buying small chunks of £25 in early 2020 but due to house renovation I sort of stopped. But then discovered this thread and my aim is to buy in bigger chunks every now and again- aiming to buy a £1000 chunk once a year! Would love to get to FH one day!
Anyway, I love reading this thread! Congrats to all the winners and here's hoping for some big wins in the near future!

Your luck sounds like me

Well done

Nothing won this month on about 41k, but I have been winning between 350 and 125 for the last four months. Based on the holdings in the last 12 months, I have earned about 3.83% interest, a bit lower than what you would expect from savings accounts/ISAs on the market, although they often cap the amount you can earn interest much lower than 50k

RockaLock · 03/04/2024 09:28

£300 for me, on £32k. Very happy with that.

We're on a good streak at the moment - 5th win in a row, and £1500 so far this year.

Mind you, last year was pretty bad - we only won £375, and DH was always on at me to cash them in. He's not saying that at the moment Grin

Caterina99 · 03/04/2024 09:28

£225 for DH on 20k and £50 for me on 30k. DH always seems to win more than I do!

SB1971 · 03/04/2024 09:31

£125 on £46k.
Have got to take £6k out when we remortgage at the end of the month so let’s see how this affects my winnings!
well done to all those that have won big.

WimbyAce · 03/04/2024 09:32

I broke my £100 stalemate and won £150 this month so happy with that. Think my best was £200 back in October.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 03/04/2024 09:32

£150 for me this month 😀

Queenie8 · 03/04/2024 09:37

I won 1x £100 and 1 x £50 = £150 on £5,000 holding this month.

I have just worked out that I'm running at 9.5% for the last 12 months. Which I'm really happy with.

It just goes to show that smaller holdings can be lucky !!

Snowpaw · 03/04/2024 09:39

£50 on 25k - not great.

hellswelshy · 03/04/2024 09:41

Very pleased, I've won 2 x £50 and 1 x £100, so £200 in total on a holding of £14100. This is the biggest win so far, very happy!

AllRevvedUpWithNoPlaceToGo · 03/04/2024 09:49

I won £100 this month, am v pleased with that!

Fatfriends23 · 03/04/2024 09:49

£200 for me this month! Very happy after not winning anything last month. £15k holdings.

NorthernDancer · 03/04/2024 09:52

Spurred on by this thread earlier in the year, I sorted out my paperwork, found my lost £5 Premium Bonds from my childhood and bought another £1,000. First time in the draw in April and I have won £25. I am beyond excited!

Thank you

FiveShelties · 03/04/2024 09:58

@Blondeshavemorefun wow well done, fabulous return.

Congratulations to everyone who won and commiserations to everyone who did not. Looking forward to May now😁

BondPremiumBond · 03/04/2024 10:06

Congratulations @Blondeshavemorefun!

I've won 1 x £50 from a bond in my £100 Christmas bonus batch I bought in January. Ridiculously pleased with that. Goodness knows how I'll feel if I'm lucky enough to win a larger amount if this is what £50 feels like 😆

That takes me to £225 winnings in just over a year. Started with £3000 and deposited every month to now be at just over £7000 invested + prizes reinvested.

yumscrummy · 03/04/2024 10:06

£500 for me on £41k, made up of 8 prizes. Biggest win yet and a boost after nothing last month. Still a rubbish annual return though.....

BeccaBean · 03/04/2024 10:08

£100 on FH for me. My lowest since November but am above average over last twelve months so definitely not complaining.

Rhoticity · 03/04/2024 10:12

not had anything for AGES!

£125 this month

Hyperion100 · 03/04/2024 10:21

275 on FH.

825 for the year so far.

TerroristToddler · 03/04/2024 10:26

I've had FH since Dec and won absolutely nothing until this month. This month I won £100, which I'm happy about but it is still pretty poor return to be honest.

I'm taking PB holdings down to just £10K now, and putting the rest of the money in a Cash ISA from Paragon with guaranteed return of 4.95% fixed for 1 year instead.

With the current interest rates available on savings accounts, PB just doesn't make much sense at the moment.

DillyHilly · 03/04/2024 10:31

Full holdings here - won £50 .
Drum roll . . . for the year , £100 , crap winnings so far this year .

HotCrossCat · 03/04/2024 10:39

£350 this month on FH. £825 so far in 2024. On track for 4.95% interest over the year.

£1200 in whole of 2023 on FH. 2.4% over the year.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 03/04/2024 10:48

£75 for me and £100 for dH both on FH
