How did you do it?

I had loads of charges when I was at Uni approx ten years ago. I haven't kept my statements though... did you need them?

You can only claim for the last six years I think, so 10yr old charges are no good

cathcart · 09/05/2007 12:56

diplidophus - you need to check out moneysavingexpert.com to see a guide on how to do it. you can only claim the last 6 years though. good luck!

I;ve been looking at my statements, I'm just worried that they'll cancel my accounts with them. Who do you bank with now cathcart and was it your choice or did hsbc make you change?

cathcart · 09/05/2007 14:14

they did not close my account. although as soon as i have paid off my loan i will be closing it!

Cathcart - congratulations. I also read your post on another thread. I know how you feel about one small mistake escalating out of control due to the bank not being willing to be lenient on one occasion, and I am sad to hear you had to use your grandfathers legacy to pay the scumbags off.

Good for you for getting this money back

I am about to start the process. Can I ask how long it took from start to finish? Did you have any probs on route?

cathcart · 09/05/2007 14:18

no problems at all. I sent my original letter off at the beginning of march and was just getting a bit restless as they seemed to be taking ages but i had the letter this morning! good luck with yours!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/05/2007 14:19

that is great! well done you.
i am still waiting for my bloody statements!

FeelingOldnGrey · 09/05/2007 14:22

Oh, the statements. I am going to need to get mine first too, might take a while eh?

I have heard that Halifax are sods with their refunds, and thats who I am with

cathcart · 09/05/2007 14:23

it took two weeks to get my statements, but if you bank online you can probably look them up there

OP posts:
FeelingOldnGrey · 09/05/2007 14:24

oh...can I? I am going to do that now...!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/05/2007 14:24

its been about a month coming up now.

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2007 14:27

Keep looking at these threads about bank charges and even got as far as printing off Martin whats his names template letters, but I'm scared!! What if they close my accounts and I'm not able to open another one? We've been in a mess before and I'm not sure we could open another one at the moment. Persuade me - is it worth the risk?

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2007 14:29

I'm with The Woolwich btw, if anyone has tried with them.

cathcart · 09/05/2007 14:33

its is probably worth trying to open up another current account before you claim if you are worried. Have a look at Martin Lewis's website and there may be other people who have had success with the woolich.

Sorry cathcart to hassle you for info. Did you use the sample letter from moneysavingsexpert.com or did you make your own letter?
I dont want to go in all high and mighty and pee them off too soon, but dont want them to think they can dilly dally around me!

cathcart · 09/05/2007 14:36

i just used the sample letter and did my claim without the interest - didn't want to push my luck!

OP posts:
littlemissbossy · 09/05/2007 14:38

Congratulations cathcart - enjoy spending the money
2 months?? is that all it took? I've put off claiming because I thought it would take an age! sod it, I'm going to have a look at moneysavingexpert myself. Wish me luck

FeelingOldnGrey · 09/05/2007 14:38

LOL, I thinks it wise! I dont think the interest would be significant enough on mine to chance peeing them off even further!
