Not complaining because the unexpected extra will go a long way towards paying for Christmas, but seriously, nearly five years? Is that normal?

I didn't check at the time (took voluntary redundancy package after maternity leave) but have checked their calculations and they are right. I did overpay tax that year.

Me too! Out of nowhere! Was very pleasant surprise indeed Grin

detoxdiva · 02/12/2011 13:40

Me too! Got all excited at the prospect of a summer holiday next year...how far will £29 get me?? Grin

bridgeandbow · 02/12/2011 13:43

Me too - but I got 3 separate letters:

2005/6
2006/7
2007/8 !!

came to over £900 so I am VERY pleased!!

I had 2 mat leaves during those years - so I figure things all got messed up a bit!

detoxdiva · 02/12/2011 13:46

Grrrrrr...but good for you bridgeandbow!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the 2005/6 one soon then as that's when I was on mat leave Grin

Pippaandpolly · 02/12/2011 13:50

Very jealous Envy I on the other hand got a letter saying I owe £600-because they think my salary is £12k more than it is and I'm being paid by two schools at once. Erm, no... Rang up a month ago to point out the mistake, got a very confused teenager on the other end of the phone promising to look into it, and nothing since. Am waiting till Monday then going to phone back again and try not to tear strips off someone...

naturalbaby · 02/12/2011 13:50

me to, well a few months ago. not sure what year but was definately several years ago. better late than never - where's the interest then?!?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/12/2011 09:33

Wasn't there a story earlier this year that millions had either been overtaxed or undertaxed and that corrections were having to be made? Maybe your circumstances have got reassessed as part of that? Nice little windfall.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/12/2011 09:35

This article says that 6 million tax rebates are being issued.

tallulah · 03/12/2011 10:29

Yes it's normal. Used to be they would go back 6 years but AFAIA that's been reduced now.

If you check the calculation you will see you have been paid interest for the earlier years too.

A small proportion of people have always been over or undertaxed (second job not declared/ company benefits not checked/ moved house and not told HMRC). It's just easier for HMRC to check now.

HarrietJones · 15/12/2011 15:15

How do you get them to answer the phone? Been on hold for 30 mins. Pretty sure they are wrong on my salary ( normally £11k but was on maternity leave for 6 months of that tax year. Says I earnt £13k.

Need my P60 really but my SPD is playing up & need dh to go to the top of the house to get it.

fluffy123 · 15/12/2011 15:27

Me too for £252... Happy days.

fairylights · 16/12/2011 10:39

my Dh did too for £912 from that tax year! seems like a miracle from heaven to us Xmas Grin

holly89 · 16/12/2011 15:59

Do you ring up and check or do they just write to you ? X

AliBellandthe40jingles · 16/12/2011 16:02

DH had an NI rebate from 1998/99 a couple of weeks ago! And ones from 2005 and 2008 earlier this year. Lovely!

juggielady · 16/12/2011 22:03

Yep me too, nice £197!

nizlopi · 18/12/2011 16:21

Ooh good, an explanation. Me and my husband also got some from 2006, we were really surprised! But yeah, not complaining ;)

PotteringAlong · 18/12/2011 16:45

Both me an DH got one for that tax year too. Between the 2 of us came to £1000 and was waiting for us when we got home from hospital after DS was born :o

LoopyLoopsWoopDeWoops · 18/12/2011 16:47

Me too, £600!

blushingm · 18/12/2011 23:05

Oh I'm feeling left out - I want one too"............I was on maternity leave in 2006/07 , I can hope ant I?

ManateeEquineOhara · 20/12/2011 07:03

I have just had a letter about this (the nice version)- fabulous timing as my car just failed its MOT/we are moving/it's Christmas and I am really struggling anyway.

How long has it taken other people between getting the letter and getting the money?

nerfmum · 20/12/2011 08:29

Only a couple of days, between the two letters but then I did get the cheque BEFORE the letter, so I was very confused, happy, but confused.
If you are moving soon Manatee then make sure you see the post office about re-directing post for a while Grin

ManateeEquineOhara · 20/12/2011 21:58

Thanks nerf. And yes, hopefully I will have the cheque by then, but must get my re-directing sorted!

ceebeegeebies · 20/12/2011 22:00

Am very happy for you all but DH got a letter saying he owed £3500 from 2008/09 Sad Sad Bloody nightmare but I guess we had the money that year (just didn't realise).

MollieO · 20/12/2011 22:02

I got £460 from 2004/2005 and 2007/2008. Employer made mistake on benefits in kind. Weird as bik didn't change at all for any of those years or the years in between (which I assume they got correct).

mumblecrumble · 20/12/2011 22:03

We got a rebate for last 2 years... then I rang about something else and they said I'd been on wrong tax code since I started my current job...... 6 years ago. I was otrn beteween the joy of a big check and being furious at being so skint tfor so long and the tax people were tasking £120 extra opff me every month.....

We got ours last january.
