Question for SAHM.'s...do you let your dh/dp take full control of finances?

Im a SAHM and so is my SIL. I know exactly what our mortgage/bills etc are. she hasnt a clue and says that dh deals with all that, she looks after the house and he does everything else. She has no idea how much the phone bill is. she cant drive so doesnt even get to go to teh supermarket by herself so doesnt even control the food bills. Her dh (my bro), is a male pig or a controlling person, he even cooks the tea when he comes home from work but I find it unusual for the woman of the house not to have any idea wants going on regarding finances. Does anyone else live like this and if so are you happy with it. She seems totally happy with it.

my dh sorts out all the bills but if I asked him to he would show them all to me and I can access all our finances on the PC. I have my own money and savings and spend them how i like.

LilacLotus · 21/09/2005 14:44

i do ALL the finances. DP doesn't even remember the pincode for his own bank account as i always take out cash if we need it. i keep track of every pound we spend as we did go in debt when we were wreckless with money when we first got together. i do the food shopping alone and DP comes to pick me up when i am done with the car. i spend far less than when DP shops with me.

yoyo · 21/09/2005 14:45

My DH would not have a clue. He is happy to let me sort it all out which gets on my nerves sometimes I have to admit.

WigWamBam · 21/09/2005 14:46

The money is ours, and it's not a matter of who "controls" the money - whoever gets to the chequebook or banking website first does the paying, and whoever opens the bank statement deals with it.

I think that this is only an issue if the woman either has no money for herself or is prevented from accessing money if she needs it (you don't say whether your SIL does), or if she is bothered by it, and at the moment your SIL isn't. I do think, though, that it's one of those things that could become a bone of contention later on.

Windermere · 21/09/2005 14:48

Dh sorts it out at the moment but thats only because we are totally disorganised at the moment not that we have agreed it will happen that way. Can't say I'm bothered either way there is not really any money left after the bills etc, if there was then that would be a different story!

littlemissbossy · 21/09/2005 14:49

I sort out all our finances/paperwork too - which is probably a good thing so DH doesn't know what I've spent on what IYKWIM

tarantula · 21/09/2005 14:49

lol I AM that controlling PIGGY WIGGY . (Pigs are wonderful intellignet animals too just like me ). I control all the finances in our house and dp is a SAHD. He is totally crap with money and I keep us solvent. I do however print out a copy of each month projected (hahaha) spending so that he knows whats going where but he never looks at it at all.

littlemissbossy · 21/09/2005 14:49

I go to work BTW but have always done this

I deal with everything and give DH money when he needs it.

tarantula · 21/09/2005 14:51

yep gets on my nerves too yoyo. Id love him to take some responsibility for our finances.

eefs · 21/09/2005 14:56

we both work, I organise the money. He could get involved (all account on-line etc) but chooses not to. Bugs the hell out of me.

Gobbledigook · 21/09/2005 15:03

No, I control finances

I am a freelancer as well as SAHM so also earning but that's irrelevant really - I'm the one who is good with numbers and has good financial sense!

tallulah · 21/09/2005 18:08

I'm not a SAHM, but I do the finances. DH hasn't got a clue My dad used to do all the finances and when he died suddenly mum had no idea what to do. She didn't even know if he had life insurance and who he paid what for what. He kept his books in perfect order but it still took ages to sort out.

pepsi · 21/09/2005 18:33

She can buy stuff on the credit card when she needs it and if things get tight he tells her to stop using it for a bit, plus she has £20.00 a week for herself. If it was me I would worry how I would cope with everything if my husband wasnt around.

I used to do it all the time, now one of us does it. He kept asking why we had no money, I said well you do it and see why. Theres so little though theres not much to work out

NomDePlume · 21/09/2005 18:40

Yes, DH sorts all the financial stuff out.

If I want to know how much stuff costs and what we pay to whom and when, then I can look at the filing cabinet where all the paperwork is neatly organised.

bundle · 21/09/2005 18:41

let him? positively encourage him. hate money/numbers.

bundle · 21/09/2005 18:41

(but I'm not a SAHM does that disqualify me?)

BunnyBoo · 21/09/2005 18:43

I do all the finances in our house, but if dh asks i will tell him but he is quite happy with me sorting it all out as he does not have much time for stuff like that due to long work hrs.

coppertop · 21/09/2005 18:47

Most of the bills are paid by Direct Debit and I know roughly how much each one is for. I deal with paying the rent (it's our money but I'm the one who hands over the money IYSWIM) and dh pays any remaining bills over the counter at the bank. We both know how much is coming in each month and how much has to be paid out.

nutcracker · 21/09/2005 18:53

No, dp hasn't got a clue about our bills, he couldn't tell you how much our rent is or anything.

puff · 21/09/2005 18:54

Team effort here.

harpsichordcarrier · 21/09/2005 19:07

my dh deals with the finances - he is an accountant and I say, why have a dog and bark yourself? he's always done it, even before I was a SAHM and I used to earn more than he dd. We do discuss any decisions. it's not necessarily a question of control (not in this house) but a division of labour. he's better at it and he enjoys it. I don't. I am social secretary/birthday monitor/cook/holiday booker etc etc.
