Tax credits - can't get through to renew! What will happen

ChristianaTheSeventh · 31/07/2010 08:29

I thought I'd renewed ages ago but checked the paperwork and it was just put through as a change of circumstance.

I gleefully had I think thrown away the declaration because I thought I had done it and they would send me a confirmation.

I have been sent no reminders. But I have also tried calling them about 34235 times a day for the last week and can't get through.

Worried about what will happen, we're v poor as DH made redundant and need the money.

What to do? What will happen if I haven't done teh declaration and I don't get through today?!

www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/keep-up-to-date/renew-claim/deadlines.htm see this link.

I think if you don't renew they go with the info they already have. I havent' rung them as I read it that I din't need to unless something had changed. Hope i'm right!

ChristianaTheSeventh · 31/07/2010 08:42

Ohhh, did you not get a renewal pack?

Sorry but I think there are 2 different things, there is a check on the change in circumstances which if you don't return they assume nothing has changed. However I think the other is the renewal, you have to fill in the form or they stop! You'll need to keep trying them and if you can't get through today then try again on Monday.
I may be wrong but worst case is the payment may stop, hopefully not. Fingers crossed for you.
Hopefully someone will be able to post with a better answer.

Eddas · 31/07/2010 08:57

ah no, no renewal pack just a review form. Maybe it's because I only get the basic amount? there was a thread on here giving another phone number. I'll see if i can find it and link to it.....

ChristianaTheSeventh · 31/07/2010 08:58

If you can find an alternative number that would be amazing. BEen trying continuously for weeks

Get in to your local tax office on monday, get a pack, fill it in , take it back. There is a weeks grace if you take it in to the office. Also if you need to speak to the tax credit hotline on the phone go in to your local office and they will speed dial you through to the top of the queue but you may need an appointment.

Danthe4th · 31/07/2010 09:03

@ eddas you are wrong you still need to renew.

ChristianaTheSeventh · 31/07/2010 09:05

Just called it too, got through straight away, have been calling 0845 one for nearly 3 weeks!

bekabee · 31/07/2010 11:36

I just tried the 01355 number and I was told it's for overseas only and to keep trying the 0845 number!! I've been ringing for about 3 weeks now but not getting through..

I wouldn't mind if I was put on hold but all I get is the answer message to say they are busy and to ring back later! RAAAAAAA

With today being the last day I'm getting a little stressed

bekabee · 31/07/2010 11:51

Has anyone been able to get through on the main number?

ChristianaTheSeventh · 31/07/2010 14:39

Just try the 01355 one again?

Someone on the WTC helpline this morning told me that you can hand the form in at your local office, and that they would accept them until the 6th. I said does that mean the deadline has been extended, she said no, get it in today if possible (some are open today) but by the 6th should be OK if not. Make of that what you will!

muggglewump · 31/07/2010 16:02

I need to call them on Monday.
I sent my renewal away fine but haven't had the paperwork back yet and I need it to apply for DD's free school meals.

BertieBotts · 31/07/2010 16:05

That's interesting Lowrib. Do they have spare forms there do you know? They sent me two because I changed from a joint claim to a single one in December - but I threw the second one away in a manic tidying spree because I was being thick and didn't realise that they were two different forms for a reason.

And yes I know I have left it really late, but I can't get through to the helpline either...

Lenkamew · 31/07/2010 19:58

I am having a BREAKDOWN here!!! why is there no info on the website? only gloomy 'your payments will stop!' phone has been glued to me and just can't get through!!! SO WORRIED!!

SecretSlattern · 31/07/2010 20:04

this happened to us last year and this year . they phoned us last year and did our renewal the day after the deadline. think we missed out on 1 weeks payment.

this year i have been unable to get through on the 0845 number and have just come across this thread. will be ringing them tomorrow!

Jaquelinehyde · 31/07/2010 20:13

I have rung them several times over the past few weeks, yesterday morning being the most recent. I have had no trouble getting through (sorry) altghough yesterday I did sit and wait in the queue for 30+ mins.

Cheer up you could be in my situation where I am entitled to the full award for my three dc's yet haven't been paid for NINE WEEKS. I am currently owed £1300 and when I spoke to them yesterday, I was told it could be another three weeks before they send notification and pay me. Until then there is nothing I can do

Lenkamew · 31/07/2010 20:13

I feel such an idiot but I really can't afford to lose any money why can't it be done online like anything else?!! (angry) !!!

Jaquelinehyde · 31/07/2010 20:15

Actually can anyone confirm what the weekly rate is for child tax credits when you are entitled to the full award.

bronze · 31/07/2010 20:24

Now I've seen this I'm cacking myself
I've phoned them pretty much weekly the last couple of months as our circumstances keep changing. I haven't phoned to renew officially as I assumed that the fact they had sent us a provisional tax credits for this year meant it was sorted.
Too late now though
