How long did it take for your pregnancy test to turn negative?

Still testing positive a week after I started bleeding, the line isn't any stronger or weaker. Still looks the same. I would've been 5 weeks 4 days today.

How long did it take for your lines to disappear and test negative?

It took mine quite a long time, around 6 weeks. You can have a tiny tiny tiny amount of retained tissue and it will cause tests to show positive, which is why mine took so long. It all passed naturally and my tests went negative. Try not to worry.

WutheringMights · 27/10/2021 10:04

I am so sorry that you are going through this @prayingforrainbows. I was 7+4 when I miscarried and it took between 7 & 8 weeks to get a negative FRER. I had no retained tissue - it just took a long time for the HCG to drop. Sending you hugs x

prayingforrainbows · 27/10/2021 13:03

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Seems like this may take longer than I had anticipated... 😔

Did you both have scans?

My GP has arranged an appointment for tomorrow as I'm still testing positive and have finished bleeding. I'm not quite sure what to expect, is it unrealistic for me to hope for a referral for an ultrasound to see if I have retained tissue etc?

I had a scan 5 weeks after the miscarriage and they confirmed I had no retained tissue. Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of time which doesn't help with the emotional aspect of the healing process x

10 weeks for me sadly.
It's a long wait
Thanks sorry for your loss

Northernsoullover · 27/10/2021 14:01

Around 8 weeks Sad

I’m sorry to ask, but do you know for sure you have miscarried?

Have you had a scan?

Bleeding can happen in early pregnancy.

prayingforrainbows · 27/10/2021 18:47

Hi @Suprima.
It hasn't been confirmed, hence why I'm hoping to be referred by GP for a scan or blood tests tomorrow.
I spoke to the GP when the bleeding started, a few days after I had told them I felt something was wrong as I had little to no progression with the pregnancy test lines getting darker, CB digital still saying 1-2 weeks (with over a week in between tests) and just a strong feeling of something wasn't quite right (sorry I can't explain it any better).

The GP said it does sound as though I'm having a miscarriage so that's what they're suspecting it is and told me that if I was still bleeding after 7 days OR if id stopped bleeding but still tested positive then I need a follow up appointment (tomorrow).

I started bleeding Thursday night and it tailed off a lot by Sunday after that I only had pink spotting when I wiped but absolutely no blood today. So over all I'd say I only had period like bleeding for 2 days and the rest was spotting.

First MMC - medicated took 10 days

Second MMC - further along at 12 weeks.
I passed naturally and exactly two weeks today since it happened I've tested negative.

@doodledeedum I'm so sorry for your losses Thanks

I'm sorry you haven't been sent anywhere to be examined. They can only really tell if the 'os' is open or via a scan. Bleeding in pregnancy doesn't necessarily mean a miscarriage either....it's all very confusing and horrible. I bled a lot but the 'os' was closed so they couldn't confirm miscarriage until I then deteriorated further. I'm sorry because it really is a horrible thing to go through, not knowing either way makes you feel so confused.

lovelylittlesunflower · 27/10/2021 20:04

Hopefully your GP will refer you to an EPU and they will test, if the test is positive they will hopefully scan you.

prayingforrainbows · 28/10/2021 18:18

Update

Has my GP appointment at 9am this morning, he was also quite confused with what's been going on.

He advised me now that I'm 6 weeks pregnant to phone EPU back and get a scan. I phoned them and they still wouldn't see me, said I cannot 'self-refer' (even though it tells you on their website to call them if you have any pain/bleeding/unusual symptoms!! Hmm) so I'd have to get in touch with my GP once again.
Called them back 20 mins after leaving the surgery to ask the doctor to call me so we can sort a referral to get someone to look into it and see what's going on.
He called me back finally around 6pm and said he will send a referral and hopefully get some answers.

Anyone have any idea what to expect regarding time scales?
Im so tempted to pay for a private early scan because all of this waiting around is giving me horrendous anxiety 😔

I started bleeding 2.5 weeks ago very early on - 5 weeks - bleeding was heavy the first few days - then trailed off to old/brown blood and the a few days later started heavy bleeding again. About 2 weeks bleeding total. Went for scan in epu and nothing there - no retained tissue. Unfortunately tests are still positive although getting slightly lighter now. Very frustrating as I just want to try again. Seems it can take quite a while

prayingforrainbows · 29/10/2021 07:40

Ugh, still no lighter or darker 😩

Should be 6 weeks today.

Hoping EPU get in touch soon so we can find out what's going on.

It's a real shame that your EPU don't allow self referral @prayingforrainbows. My EPU do but I appreciate CCG's differ around the country. Call the EPU this morning and explain that your GP should have sent through a referral and can they check to see if it's been received. Ideally, they will ask you to go along today for a scan so that you can find out what's happening. The unknown is no good for anxiety levels.

PinkMoon22 · 29/10/2021 07:55

If EPU don't ring by dinner time, ring them.
If they don't have anything booked in yet they should be able to give a scale of how long you'll have to wait.
Thanks

Harlequin1088 · 29/10/2021 07:57

I had an ectopic pregnancy and had emergency surgery to remove a ruptured Fallopian tube. I was still testing positive about a week later. I think by the time I got to 10 days post-op only then did I start testing negative. It takes a while for the pregnancy hormones in your body to drop down so that's why the positive tests keep coming back.

I'm so sorry for your loss, by the way. If you haven't already, please contact the Pregnancy Loss Team at your hospital's Early Pregnancy Unit. They offered me counselling throughout my loss and I found them to be so comforting. Please know you're not alone Thanks

prayingforrainbows · 29/10/2021 08:23

Yeah I think I'll ring them if I haven't heard by lunch time. It'll be the 3rd time I've asked them for help, I just can't believe how little support is out there for women in early pregnancy 😔 been passed around pillar to post and the anxiety is insane! 🤯

I'm shocked honestly, I had a lot of pain on a few occasions this week, I explained to my GP and the EPU staff on the phone and both weren't concerned. Part of me wishes I'd rocked up at A&E so I know they can't turn me away! But that just sounds extreme, and I have my 18 month old with me on my days off from work.

Fingers crossed for some news today 🤞🏼

Update:

Went for a private scan yesterday, the sonographer had a good look around but said she cannot see any sign of a pregnancy. Womb lining measured 4.5mm. So she diagnosed pregnancy of unknown location and booked me in for a follow up scan in 2 weeks.

Tests still coming back very positive, even getting stronger, just want it all to be over so we can try again. I really thought I'd see them getting lighter or have turned negative by now, given I miscarried at what would've been 4 days late for AF. So before 5 weeks, and now it's been a week since the bleeding/spotting finished.

On another note - I had a bit of EWCM yesterday too, so just for fun I took an OPK which came out blazing but I'm aware this is more than likely just the HCG leftover.

Update for anyone who may be following or reading this in the future:

These are my tests from today, for the first time ever the CB digital says 2-3 weeks (haven't taken one since 29/10) and the other tests are continuing to get darker. (Pic attached)

Got my referral to EPU sorted and have an appointment tomorrow to find out what's going on.

Oh this is soooo amazing! Fingers crossed next scan shows the location, congratulations 🎊

prayingforrainbows · 03/11/2021 12:21

Thank you @doodledeedum, I really hope it turns out to be good news but I'm not expecting much.

I do find it odd that they're getting darker/levels are rising given it was such an 'early loss' at 4w5d, bleeding finished over a week ago so totally confused as to how I'm still showing positive but we shall see tomorrow hopefully!

WutheringMights · 03/11/2021 13:41

On one hand, your positive tests are fantastic news @prayingforrainbows but I completely understand why you are feeling confused and concerned. Going by your dates, you would have been 6+1 when you had a private scan - I think that's a little too early for anything to be seen so there's hope that you will see some progress during your next scan. Your endo being under 5mm is on the low side but if you had a bleed early on, that would explain the thin lining. It's simply too early to speculate but I wish you all the love in the world that this turns into a wonderful pregnancy for you. Good luck!
