Will retained products come out with a period?

Hi ladies.
I had medical miscarriage about 3 half weeks ago, I was 6 weeks.
I have retained product just under 3cm left, I am booked for an mva tomorrow.
I was told the retained products had a bloody supply to it.
I am no longer bleeding with intermittent cramps.
I am wondering is it worth waiting for my period to see if it will come out.
Have you ladies had any experience of this ? The consultant said you can still have a period despite testing positive, as the lower level of pregnancy hormone won't stop a period. Any advice?

I just wondered what the outcome was for you if you don’t mind sharing? I am going through a similar thing at the moment. I have had medical management and a D&C but have been told I still have retained products a month later. Mine also has a blood supply but been told hopefully it will come out with period. What happened with you in the end?

Going through similar. Found out I had a missed miscarriage when scanned at 11 weeks. Started medical management 3 weeks ago. Took pregnancy test yesterday and it came back positive and have now been booked in for a scan. Really not wanting to have a d&c and had horrific bleeding from the misoprostol so don't want that again as had to be blue lighted into a&e. So very anxious and just wanting this over. But was previously told it may take up to 6 weeks and I may have to wait for my period to return. Wondering what your outcomes are/will be?

Mine came out with a period and I ended up in a&e. I had no idea the misoprostol hadn't worked as the nurse told me it had. I had spotting all the time until my period. Conceived the month after even though there was a tiny bit of retained products, they weren't big enough for a d&c. Just be wary that you could have a massive bleed. I collapsed at home with mine and called my dad to take me to hospital but would have called 999 if he wasn't close by. As long as you are aware of it as I had no idea and was caught by surprise. Wish the nurse had told me about this

This is one of the things I am worried about as have already been in hospital with a big bleed before my D&C in August.

I am just so worried. It’s 9 weeks today since my medical management and still no period. So keen to start trying again.

How long did it take for your period to come back and do you mean you conceived again the month after your big bleed? That’s really positive to hear. I have also wondered about falling pregnant with some products left and what would happen.

I was told by the nurse that the misoprostol worked as sac was gone but I was retaining the lining of 21mm. That was 3 weeks ago. Had one very heavy bleed before that which we also weren't warned about and was in a&e but had another heavy bleed a few days later but managed at home. Just waiting for Tuesday to find out where I am. The bleeding had lessened but now turning brown (sorry for the graphic description) as if end of period

My lining was 27mm at my scan on Tuesday but they didn’t say how big the area of product was. Just that it looked very vascular.

I have started with some very thick brown discharge this morning. I am hoping this is things starting to move as just want this to be over now.

It took 5 weeks for my period to come. When I say spotting there was red blood on and off. I have long cycles so 5 weeks was normal for me. I think it can take longer after a miscarriage? Maybe ring epau and say its been 9 weeks and take a pregnancy test? They should at least be able to call you back. I didn't have any bleeding after the period and what was left wasn't vascular. So felt ok try.
I conceived 2-3 weeks after the big bleed.
I lost 5 months due to the mmc and the misoprostol not working so I understand wanting to keep trying and not wanting to wait for your next period. Could have done with another month to get my strength back

Thanks for reply. I have stopped calling epau to be honest as they are getting fed up. Mad medical management, minor haemorrhage and then D&C over the course of 6 weeks. Still had a faint positive on test last week and HCG of 11 so had a scan on Tuesday and said some product attached still but best to wait for period now to avoid anymore intervention. I wouldn’t mind but been waiting 9 weeks already and feel it will never come!

Astra have they been monitoring your HCG levels?

They did give me an ectopic scare before I was given the misoprostol. Hcg was monitored 48 hourly for 6 days to confirm Hcg levels were going down. Then confirmed it was a missed miscarriage and not ectopic

Sorry for the late reply. Was a sad day Tuesday to find at scan 22mm of lining left but a better day Wednesday to get a 67 hcg result meaning I can wait for my period. Just anxious now but happy not to have to have a d&c or misoprostol again. Just hope it comes away with my period. Will have another scan after my period or in 4 weeks if It doesn't come.

Pleased to hear you are feeling more positive.
It’s now 10 weeks for me and still no period unfortunately. Since yesterday I have had come bright red spotting but not enough to call it a period or anywhere near what I’m used to. I just can’t read my body anymore which makes me quite sad. Still getting a very faint positive on a FRER and have a blood test booked for Tuesday to see what HCG level is now.

Just joining the RPOC thread... I had MMC and medical management, then surgical management in August but there might be something left, they had to stop the surgery because of a big bleed and just gave more misoprostol afterwards.

ive had 2 cycles since but u/s has shown something there still. petrified to have more surgery to remove because of how wrong the last one went.

I was told retained product could remain through a period, or indeed, stop periods returning. Fingers crossed, though, in your case, it will all be straight forwards.

I know surgery is terrifying, but it's not always awful. I had medical management back in March and bled excessively. They were on the verge of doing emergency surgery at 3am when they managed to bring it under control. As a result, they weren't happy to continue with drug treatment and I was booked for surgery the following week. Following the trauma of the medical attempt, I was really scared, but surgery was straight forwards. I went down at 3pm and was home by 7pm. Never had any complication.

I really hope it doesn't come to this for you, but I just wanted to reassure you that, if it does, it's not always awful.

I just wanted to post an update for anyone relentlessly trawling these threads as I found myself doing.

I did finally have a period on the 6th October which was nearly 11 weeks since the whole process started. I expected it to be really heavy given the retained product but it was pretty unremarkable. I had a scan a few days ago to confirm everything has passed, which it now has. She also confirmed I will most likely ovulate in the next few days so I’m hoping to try again. I am having the same old anxieties as I did before regarding things like Ashermans and wondering if I will ever be able to get pregnant again. I am 39 in a couple of months as well so that’s going against me.

I really hope you ladies I have been chatting with previously are doing okay. And to anyone reading this who is going through this awful process- you will come out the other side. Patience is key. Something I don’t have a lot of!

Your situation seems very similar to mine. Its been 11weeks since my D&C and I haven’t got my period. scans showed a few very small products left. I think the dr said it’s calcified? I’m due for a period in 2 weeks. Anxiously waiting to see if it comes back and hopefully flush the product out.
Just wondering how you all went? Have you managed to get pregnant? Thank you 😊

@Hunibuni85 sorry to hear. In my situation the d&c totally messed up and ended up with 4 days in hospital Confused and they didn't get everything out. 2 periods later and it still remained and would only be visible on scans at certain times of my cycle.

Had to have another hysteroscope/d&c to remove it.

I had a miscarriage some weeks back,after that I want for scan,I was told I had some retained product,Immediately I called my nurse n I was given two drugs n injection I only have light bleed n brownish discharged for some days...so after some weeks I decided to make use of my pt strips all test was a negative results...but is it possible to still have retained product in me??

Hi everyone

How it went for you? I am going through somewhat similar situation. I got to know mmc on 27th April. In month of may took 3 rounds of misoprostol but had to undergo SMM on 9th June due to small RPOC left behind. I went for a follow-up scan on 20th June due to heavy bleeding for 8 days where they found still small tissue left (1.5 cm). I am really clueless now what to do next. :-( It feels like forever and not getting over. My pregnancy test is negative but intermittent bleeding is continuing. Can I expect this to come out with period or should I have another surgery? I really want to try again asap.

@Akan im also in the same boat! SMM and after 3 weeks and infections I got told I still had 1.5cm tissue left. I’ve started my period today but it really doesn’t seem a alot? (Im now 5 weeks since surgery) I’m worried that it’s just going to be a small period and be back at step 1 still wondering if my body will ever naturally release the tissue :( I’ve read it can calcify and make it harder to conceive so I feel like every week that goes by it’s just going to make TTC even harder.

I keep looking for positive stories about retained tissue passing naturally after surgery but can’t seem to find any to put my mind at ease x

Hi ladies
just checking in. I am 8 weeks after miscarriage - all natural no medical management. I bled or spotted through most of these weeks which led to having a scan today. I have had what I believe is 1 period and am ovulating ( saw today on scan). I miscarried pretty early on week 6 I think. Had a big bleed and passed the tissue and continued spotting stopping for a day or two once which is when is when I think I ovulated. I had a ‘period’ 2 weeks after that and now I’m 2 weeks after that and ovulating so seems my cycles are not disrupted except for all the intermittent spotting. At my scan they said there is product with blood going to it ( that colourful stuff) but couldn’t find an ovum or placenta or I guess the source. I have read all the bad stories from misoprostol and d n c s and really want to continue the natural route. My HCG has been decreasing well in the last week from 80 to 20 in a week and will see what todays result is. I want to advocate for myself but am scared that having another period won’t clear up the remnants. Has anyone just let their period do it’s thing? My spotting finished yesterday again I think it’s because I’m ovulating. The tech said even if we try - likely the egg won’t implant as the lining is disrupted by remnants. Just looking for similar stories…
