Pregnancy test still positive

Hello,

I had surgery on June 27th for an ectopic at 6weeks. Hcg level was around 9000 at that time.
I'm still having blaring positive pregnancy tests.
Does anyone know how long this takes to become negative - it's just getting me down as I want to have a first cycle before trying again, and obviously won't get a first cycle until my body is free of hcg hormone.

Any help/insight or advice would be hugely appreciated, I'm feeling quite down about it all

Thank you x

So sorry for your loss Flowers
I still tested positive 5 weeks after mc. As it had been a two embryo transfer the fertility clinic rescanned me to check if there was a remaining viable pregnancy. I didn’t recheck after seeing the scan.

It is understandable to be down, there are midwives trained in bereavement available for support on here if you need it

About 4 weeks after everything had settled and bleeding had stopped for me.

I didn’t bother doing any tests after that, just waited for period to come.

Hello, I'm so sorry for your loss. I had an mva procedure for a mmc at 8 weeks on the 8th June. I am still getting very faint positives on sensitive tests now which is 5 weeks and 5 days post procedure. I went back to the EPU at the 3 week mark as I was told to call if I was still getting a positive. They did an internal scan to check for retained tissue (there wasn't any) and bloods which came back at 102, bloods were retaken the following week and came back at 34. I'm hoping to get a negative over the next couple of days as the tests are extremely faint now. I do think hormones take longer to go down if it was a mmc as opposed to a natural mc as the hormones in that case would have already been declining. It really is frustrating I just want my cycles back so I can ttc again. Once you hit the 3 week mark I would contact the EPU if you are still getting positives xx

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I'm sorry for your losses 💐

Your replies have reassured me. Hopefully it will decline further and I can start trying for my rainbow 🌈 x

Hi op, sorry for your loss...sending hugs and positive vibes!
I had an mva on 22nd June for a mmc at 8wks. I bled for 10 days after (light brown rather than proper blood) and had a negative test 3wks later (Monday just gone). Yesterday I came on my period and on in full flow today Sad....But at least I know my body has reset.
It appears to vary when you get a negative test, lots of factors that can alter it (gestation, starting hcg, how your body generally recovers etc). As others have said, if it's still positive after 3 wks, call the epau to check it out. Xx

Quail15 · 18/07/2020 19:22

Hi I had a d&c on the 26th June. I finally got my negative pregnancy test this morning. The waiting is awful. I hope you get yours soon X x

ivfdreaming · 18/07/2020 19:48

Hcg should halve every 24 or so But could be quicker since you've had surgery

You should also really wait longer than one cycle before trying again.............

coffeewithmilk · 18/07/2020 20:10

Thank you everyone for your replies. My hcg was up at 9000 so will probably take ages to go down.

@ivfdreaming my consultant said it's no problem to start trying again after one cycle as the ectopic I had was extremely rare - my right tube is working and the egg travelled into the womb but was drawn up to a previous surgical site.
He said it's 1: a million.
He's happy for me to continue after one period
X

I've started bleeding again this morning (after have a 5 day bleed post op 3 weeks ago), hoping that it is my first cycle, but pregnancy test is still very positive - havent a clue what's going on with my body but will just have to go with it x

Wearenotyourkind · 19/07/2020 12:11

Hey. It took 6 weeks after my MC to get a negative pregnancy test. Hang in there 💗

coffeewithmilk · 24/07/2020 07:50

Thank you @Wearenotyourkind
I'm still having positive tests, despite having a post surgery bleed and also my first post op period. Hoping it'll turn to negative soon x

Northernsoul90 · 24/07/2020 08:49

@coffeewithmilk Fingers crossed you get a negative soon, I finally got a negative this week which is 6 weeks after my mc. Have you been in contact with your doctor or hospital about the positive tests? X

coffeewithmilk · 24/07/2020 16:28

Fingers crossed @Northernsoul90
I was going to wait until next week, going to give it at least to the 4 week mark and then contact my doctor afterwards, even just to see if I can get a blood hcg done to see where it stands now. It's very frustrating.
I was just under the assumption that because I had surgery to remove the pregnancy, that the levels would drop quicker, but maybe it doesn't work like that x

OP posts:
Northernsoul90 · 24/07/2020 17:39

@coffeewithmilk I had presumed the same and thought it would drop quickly as the procedure removed everything. It's so frustrating, I feel your pain! Yeah maybe give them a call and then at least you would be given blood tests and would know where you were at. Hope all goes well xx

BenScalesIsAGod · 24/07/2020 17:41

Just popping up to say you definitely need follow up for this at the 3 week mark. X

coffeewithmilk · 25/07/2020 10:51

I did a CB digital this morning and it said 3+ weeks.
Contacted EPU and they said my test shouldn't be positive. Retest in 5 days, and if it is still positive, I need to contact them again to go in for bloods.
I don't know how they expect me to wait another week, would just be better to go in now, maybe I'll just ring again on Monday and see what they say xx

OP posts:
Northernsoul90 · 25/07/2020 11:15

@coffeewithmilk I would ring on Monday again, I'm not sure why they have advised to wait another week because 3+ weeks on a clear blue is quite a high level of hormone. Did you tell them that it was a weeks indicator? Sorry that it seems to be dragging on, hopefully they will see you early next week and maybe do an ultrasound and bloods like they did with me. Xx

S10130928 · 25/07/2020 18:56

I had an MVA on the 20th July and had a positive yeaterday, really hoped it would have been negative, I picked MVA so it was quicker (not exactly best experience) so fingers crossed I get a negative and the neasua passes soon

Northernsoul90 · 26/07/2020 10:17

@S10130928 Hopefully you bet a negative soon 🤞🏼if you haven't by the 3 week mark make sure you ring your local EPU to get things checked 😊 best of luck

coffeewithmilk · 26/07/2020 11:38

@Northernsoul90 yeah I told them it was a digital weeks indicator but I feel like she just kind of fobbed me off on the phone and said to retest in a few days and then get back in contact. If the CB is reading 3+ weeks, I can't imagine it is going to become negative within 5 days.
I will ring on Monday and just try and push to come in and get bloods. Have been having some mild cramping too, feels as though my period is coming but I just had a period 2 weeks ago.
The body is a confusing thing x

OP posts:
Houndabouttown · 26/07/2020 12:45

If it’s 3+ that’s ridiculous to tell you to wait as the levels are quite high. I doubt they will suddenly drop. My experience of EPU was that they tried to get rid of me as much as possible! They don’t seem to take complications very seriously

coffeewithmilk · 27/07/2020 11:22

I rang again this morning and it was the same person on the phone and basically just tried to say oh well I suppose you could come in for a blood test but we aren't going to give you an answer as to what's going on today, and also you are not pregnant, so the tests are not telling you you are pregnant. Since it's the second time you've phoned in 2 days then you can come in for bloods if you want.

Now I just feel like a huge inconvenience and feel like I'm being that annoying patient. I don't really know what else to do, and now feel even more emotional because she was rude on the phone when I'm just genuinely concerned x

OP posts:
Northernsoul90 · 27/07/2020 11:57

@coffeewithmilk I cannot believe that you have been treated this way. I'm really sorry that they have been so unsupportive and insensitive. When I went in for my bloods I was rang and told the results later the same day and was also given an internal scan which I am shocked they have not considered. Is your GP supportive? Could you call them maybe rather than the EPU and tell them what is going on? Xx

coffeewithmilk · 27/07/2020 12:59

@Northernsoul90 it's awful, I'm a nurse and would never speak to anyone that way. I just feel let down to be honest.
I did another test to make sure I'm not seeing things and the line came up dark straight away.
Discussed with DH and we are going to make appointment to see our lovely gp tomorrow. He is always very helpful and knows exactly what to do x

Pregnancy test still positive

They do an internal scan after an MVA to ensure all tissue is removed so id assume that's why they haven't offered, mistakes can happen though so I'd maybe push it, i think the hormone drops at different levels in everyone which is why its a waiting game, they still should be being alot kinder though, this is such a hard time. I'm only a week in and im already frustrated with a positive cant imagine how you feel. Sorry your being treated this way
