Uterine AVM after surgical management of miscarriage

I have been diagnosed with a uterine AVM, following an MVA (which I think is the same as ERPC, but under a local anaesthetic) after my missed miscarriage at 10 weeks (I had a miscarriage previously at 6 weeks, this pregnancy followed straight on, I had no period in between).

I had the procedure 7 weeks ago and had been having bleeding and positive pregnancy tests since. The hospital initially thought it may have been retained product (hate, hate, hate that term!), but there was quite a lot of blood flow to the mass in my uterus, so an AVM was queried. I had a negative hpt today, and another scan, unfortunately the mass had not decreased and still has quite a big blood flow - hence finally being diagnosed with AVM.

Sorry for the essay, I would just be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this. I can't find much info about it. I just want to try and move on from my miscarriages, but finding it so difficult after continuos trips back to EPAU, even though I haven't actually been pregnant for 7 weeks.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Hey @Francescarae
if you don’t mind me asking, what was the outcome for you?
I had a D&C post MMC 8 weeks ago and consultant thinks I’ve ever got an AVM or had a partial molar pregnancy :(
I still have around 3-4cm of retained product which is very vascular. Also been bleeding pretty heavily for the past 2 weeks.
worried sick and just wanted to feel and be “normal” again. Xx

@HopefulCove can I ask what happened? Are you all recovered?

I have been trying to find threads on this to put my mind at ease. I had my second MC last week. Natural this time but had D&C before. They scanned me and said retained products but the sonographer is also concerned it’s AVM. They told me this in about 2 mins and just said it’s rare so hopefully not but need to treat it as if it is. They have said I will have a scan in 12 weeks to see. I can’t get my head around how I’m supposed to just carry on and hope all is okay and they didn’t say anything about TTC etc.

many positive outcomes from this thread eith babies born after?

Hi @Hopingforrainbow2025 yes I am all recovered now. Hoping to start TTC properly again this month 🤞🏻unfortunately they never got to the bottom of what was causing all of my hemorraghing and my slow dropping HCG - I personally think it was my body’s (very dramatic way) of trying to get rid of some retained product, but I ended up in hospital following an uncontrollable bleed which seemed to sort things out to me as my levels quite quickly dropped to 0 after that final experience.

are you still bleeding quite a lot? They said the retained products inside me were very vascular but it didn’t end up being an AVM so I would try not to worry too much x

@Hopingforrainbow2025 if it’s any reassurance I had a suspected avm back in 2017 (I posted on this thread back then). I got pregnant a few months after that all happened and now have 2 beautiful children. As frustrating as I know it is having to wait, definitely don’t give up hope xx

@Francescarae thank you for sharing that! I am so happy you are pregnant and all is well. It must have been a very scary experience after the d n c. Was it a long time to recover from procedure to ttc?
I haven’t been advised not to TTC (I’m guessing because diagnosis is not sure yet) but I am scared now just in case.

@HopefulCove i am glad you are recovered now. Can I ask were you ovulating and having periods or you didn’t because of the product?
I feel frustrated that my body just doesn’t recover quickly. I had retained product last time but then the next time they scanned me they said there is not retained, it is a fibroid. That’s why I’m so confused now as last year I was told retained, then no it’s a fibroid, now saying this time possible AVM. I’ve read so many studies over the last day and it seems there is lots of misdiagnosis of this condition and that even fibroids have blood supply. So my head is all over the place. The reason I am annoyed is they want to just leave me for 12 weeks and then see if it exists. Did you have regular scans?

I am not bleeding much but I’m still recovering from miscarriage so every day but not severe. Haven’t had first period yet so will have to see if that helps pass some tissue.

@LauLauH thank you. This is lovely to hear about your babies. I feel quite hopeless right now with the losses and just want to be recovered. I’m hoping mine is just retained product and they are being cautious but the not knowing is going to stress me out over the next few months.

I wasn’t allowed to TTC again for 8 months but that was because I had a cervical hematoma after my D&C, and I went through extensive testing before being given the green light because of the AVM and saw a specialist in London and the referral time was months , It’s an IVF pregnancy and had an embryo transfer 9 months after the D&C and luckily found out that I’m pregnant and had a really good experience throughout this pregnancy.
im having a c section in 3 weeks x
