Suddely smelly armpits

Educ8tor · 14/07/2026 20:01

Since being perimenopausal (46) and with the hot weather, my armpits (one more than the other!) Have become really smelly. I shower in the morning and use ineos or waves apart antiperspirants plus sometimes a top up spritz of dove aerosol. I wear fresh clothes daily and always wear sleeveless tops to try to keep cool. But by the evening, I smell awful and I'm so embarrassed. I have tried driclor before but I am allergic to it (and lots of other antiperspirant deodorants). I have never had an issue with smelling before even after sweating and longer without showering. Can anyone offer any advice please?

I found washing armpits with soap helped massively
And reapplying anti pers a couple of times a day
Definitely a peri issue for me

Same here, I just carry deodorant to work and freshen up at break times. Why just the one armpit though 🙄it’s my left never the right?

blablablagobshite · 14/07/2026 22:22

someone on here suggested using witch hazel on cotton pads under arms after shower and that worked for me.

I came on to say swap to bar soap too! Game changer!

OhThePotential · 14/07/2026 22:23

Same problem, kind of…I hit fifty and started smelling strongly of stale coffee even though I never touch the stuff. Very weird.

Washing with persimmon soap twice a day solved it for me. I then use sanex roll on antiperspirant and a squirt of Neals Yard liquid deodorant and I now smell of nothing but my chosen perfume again.

i use Faith in Nature soap for my pits. I buy it from Holland & Barrett.

MyJollyFish · 15/07/2026 13:31

Yes mine became smelly after 40 which was a new thing, not had BO since being a teenager. It did improve on HRT and have to use decent deodorant and soap.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/07/2026 15:14

I had this as well, one armpit was worse than the other.

It was like this for around 6 months and then randomly went away.

I only use bar soap, or soap as it used to be called and my pits don't smell.

What are people washing their armpits with if not soap?

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 15/07/2026 20:05

I had this issue and two things changed it (that were recommended on here).

  1. only use soap not shower gel (dettol soap is great)
  2. only use a roll on like Mitchum never spray

Took a few weeks but not had a problem since

MabelAnderson · 15/07/2026 20:08

Yes to soap, and I use AKT deodorant and find it really effective. It’s the best natural deodorant that I have tried.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2026 20:10

I had the opposite I suddenly stopped sweating at all and my body hair just stopped- no leg shaving or underarms needed!!

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 15/07/2026 20:11

Oh God, totally all of this…..I smelt like I had a dirty kebab under each armpit 😂….. it’s better now I’m the other side of the menopause but on the very hot days we’ve had I can smell it again…..you’ve had some very good advice but to add my two Penneth worth , on those days I use Badedas shower gel….its a heavier one and quite perfumed but works a treat for my Burger pits 😉.. good luck finding something that works x

anrom1969 · 15/07/2026 20:13

I’ve mentioned my one arm pit that smells like I’ve fallen asleep with kebab underneath it before on here and there were other sufferers (maybe 20/30 years ago could have been a possibility) dettol bar soap and a good roll on and spray have improved the situation but some mornings I still wake with kebab pit .. Good Luck , menopause, the gift that keeps on giving!

Moistcottonchafers · 15/07/2026 20:16

Another vote for soap here. Strangely it was one armpit for me. 😅 Just an inexpensive bar of Aldi antibacterial soap did the trick. I use bar soap in the summer too.

3xmonsters · 15/07/2026 20:17

Soap and AKT deodorant fixed it for me!

Ah you and me both !!

If at work, scrub with a paper towel with a bit of soap and water, apply some hand sanitiser then a deo top up.

ForgedForDrizzleAndDisappointment · 15/07/2026 20:23

Hand sanitiser every few days (not after shaving!!) at night just to kill all the bacteria helps no end, then soap and an exfoliating mitt. And men's anti perspirant.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 15/07/2026 20:26

I used perspirex, it has got better post menopause but it was awful at the time.

AgentPidge · 15/07/2026 20:30

I'm post-menopause and I've noticed that some mornings I wake up with smelly armpits, and other mornings there's no smell at all, and I put it down to what I've eaten the night before. If it's something that causes me inflammation, then my body has a minor reaction against it. So for example, with pasta I'll smell (gluten) but with rice, I won't.

WeddingInvitation · 15/07/2026 20:42

Mine got better post menopause. Soap helped, natural fibres too.

petitpasta · 15/07/2026 21:12

Another recommendation for old school bar of soap. I also found wild deodorant to be a game changer

AgMaggy · 15/07/2026 21:14

Bar of soap (I particularly like the pink Dove) then glycolic acid applied with a cotton pad, let dry and then apply deodorant.

Morepositivemum · 15/07/2026 21:16

Not much help but I will say roll on has always worked better for me than spray in all brands (then a spray of impulse on my body plus perfume) Using Sanex or Mitchum at the mo but reapplying regularly
