Suddely smelly armpits

Educ8tor · 14/07/2026 20:01

Since being perimenopausal (46) and with the hot weather, my armpits (one more than the other!) Have become really smelly. I shower in the morning and use ineos or waves apart antiperspirants plus sometimes a top up spritz of dove aerosol. I wear fresh clothes daily and always wear sleeveless tops to try to keep cool. But by the evening, I smell awful and I'm so embarrassed. I have tried driclor before but I am allergic to it (and lots of other antiperspirant deodorants). I have never had an issue with smelling before even after sweating and longer without showering. Can anyone offer any advice please?

My sympathies 😊

Wash my armpits with bar soap using a sponge that has been soaked in a bit of Dettol ( diluted with water )
I then use Sanex or Mitchum roll on.
i touch up throughout the day

I use persimmon soap when I shower. I then layer antiperspirant deodorant by using a roll on first, (dry with a hair dryer on cold) and use a spray twice.

LittleGreenDragons · 15/07/2026 23:25

Use bar soap, not Dove though as that is a moisturiser rather than a cleaning bar.

Use a small dob of hand sanitiser at bedtime rubbed into the smelly pit. Mine was the right one, the left always smelt lovely. This weird phenomenon will disappear in a couple of years of its own accord.

Perspirex - keeps you dry for about 5 days . Just do not use if you have shaved your armpits recently or on broken skin - painful !

Bar soap, then apple cider vinegar on cotton wool & allowed to dry worked for my kebab pits.

On the plus side, I had maybe a year of it, & then since being fully post menopause, I just don’t smell at all.

I’m in a hot country, I had a shower this morning since when I’ve been lugging packing boxes around all day in an apartment with no AC, & I’m decidedly grubby & sticky…but my armpits just smell quite pleasantly of warm deodorant.

so there’s light at the end of the tunnel, maybe!

I’ve had to switch to Sure 3X Maximum Protection. It’s more expensive but it does work.

Shinyandnew1 · 15/07/2026 23:50

I have used Mitchum stick deodorant and it’s been great, but I find it seems to not work as well as it used to. Either the ingredients have changed or it doesn’t work as well on me as it did. Is the roll on better?

I use the cream stick one if that’s the same and get it in bulk off amazon, usually much cheaper

also this is good for smelly anything, acne, armpits, eczema, sanitising hands, feet… endless uses

Same here, I just carry deodorant to work and freshen up at break times. Why just the one armpit though 🙄it’s my left never the right?

Mine’s my right, never the left. Are you left handed, perchance? (Jus a theory I saw once courtesy of Dr google.)

No, right handed.

I use mitchum roll on as recommended here. It is excellent.

Educ8tor · 21/07/2026 17:24

Just wanted to say thank you for all the suggestions.
I tried dettol soap, mitchum and glycolic acid with no difference. However, AKT has worked. No more smell, dry armpits and I'm not allergic!

I embarrassingly found that I started noticing my body odour later in the day about 3 years ago just before I went onto HRT (I’m 49 now); despite having had a shower that morning.
I changed my antiperspirant deodorant to a different brand as well. I find Sure works well for me.
I also think the HRT has definitely helped me in a lot of ways.

andrinaballerina · 21/07/2026 19:37

Saltair serum deodorant has worked wonders for me - doesn’t stop the sweat but 100% has fixed the BO. I think it’s the combination of acids (like using glycolic acid on a cotton pad) that makes it work.

Mary46 · 21/07/2026 19:39

Same here but one armpit very sweaty. Had to use wipes aswell in june (we do school bus). Strange. Wonder is it menopause. Might try soap

Try bar soap a dettol one , I don’t work for dettol I promise. It just makes my one kebab arm pit a little more clean !

hhheeyyyy · 21/07/2026 22:23

Bar of soap and triple dry 100 hours deodorant. Smell great again now!
