How do you take your collagen powder?

Moveyourbleedingarse · 08/04/2026 09:03

Posting here because I'm peri menopausal, on HRT and a consultant has recomended collagen to heal a tendon issue.

I'm guessing that there is a good distribution of people in the meno board who also take collagen...

So, how on earth do you mix collagen powder so it isn't lumpy and doesn't make you gag?

I bought the unflavoured one from Elevate. They sent a little whizzer thing.

I've tried whizzing it into slightly warm water - omg the smell, I gagged and tipped it down the drain.

I've tried tipping it into my coffee and it just formed lumps even when I mixed it. Went down the drain.

This morning I tried one of the sample chocolate sachets they sent, mixed with some cold milk using the whizzer. Still full of lumps, but also frothy which I dislike, and tasted like one of those diet hot chocolate sachets. Bleugh.

I am committed to taking this stuff to help with my tendon healing as per medical advice, but I really struggle to drink stuff that isn't 'normal'. I also had to give away my protein powder as I couldn't bring myself to swallow it 😬

Please lovely menopausal people, how do you take your collagen?

I take it as a pill. Much easier!

notacooldad · 08/04/2026 09:05

Mine is from Geek nutrition and it doesn't smell.
I stir mine into my Greek yogurt at breakfast time.

ChurpyBurd · 08/04/2026 09:05

I use ancient & brave bovine collagen.

I put a spoonful in with the granules in my morning coffee, add hot water.

No lumps, no taste, no problems.

Which type are you using? I hear marine collagen stinks.

YouBelongWithMe · 08/04/2026 09:06

I use Nutrition Geeks collagen. It dissolves fully in my coffee? It's flavourless.

Iydrd · 08/04/2026 09:07

I have the collagen glow up one by nutrition geeks. I put it first into the mug and pour hot water on top of it as opposed to the other way round. A bit like hot chocolate powder I think you have to do it that way round to stop lumps forming. Sometimes I add hot choc powder to the mug too and put boiling watwr in and I can’t taste the collagen powder. Sometimes I fill the mug half way with boiling water and then add concentrated lemon squash , stir, and then a little cold water

HandsFaceTeeth · 08/04/2026 09:10

I use this - easy to mix, no lumps, slight strawberry taste which is quite pleasant

I use this one either stirred into coffee, if there are any lumps I just let it sit for a minute and stir again and they disappear. Or stirred into Greek yoghurt with some vanilla protein powder and sometimes chia seeds too (I add a little milk if adding chia seeds). I can’t taste it or notice any lumps. I have had it in squash and it dissolves fine but it does make it slightly thicker and I don’t really like that.

would it be worth pouring your powder in to your drink slowly and whisking while pouring?

I tried that!! But the pills I found only gave 1500mg of collagen, when the recommended dose for me is 10-15g a day. I don't mind any pills but 10 a day seemed a bit excessive!

@Soontobe60 i fully agreed and had no intention of buying it. Until an Osteo consultant told me that there is evidence for taking it while being treated and the treatment being more effective.

@Mosaic80 i could try it in yoghurt. Will give it a try tomorrow.

@ChurpyBurd its Elevate. £39 for a ten day supply. 😱 I expected it to be amazing!! I only intend to take it for a few weeks to try to help my healing process. In the ads women just tip it in, stir and drink.

@YouBelongWithMe mine is supposed to be flavourless. I'm still feeling queasy from downing the chocolate one I had earlier!

Ok I will try mixing it half with my yoghurt tomorrow and maybe the other half I'll put in the mug and let the espresso drip onto it, rather than pouring it onto the coffee.

Thanks all I knew you would have some ideas ❤️

I use the Geeks Nutrition one. Pour a bit of boiling water on and stir, then add cold water and a bit of ice, then add in an orange flavour Phizz dissolvable multivitamin/electrolye. Makes a nice refreshing drink.

Ooooh never thought to mix with an electrolyte tablet. That's a really good idea I have some of those and don't mind the taste!

I get the one from nutrition geeks. I stir it in a decaf coffee early evening

Aparecium · 08/04/2026 10:14

Yogurt. I’ve tried mixing it into loads of different drinks and not liked the result in any. I now mix powders into yogurt and add nuts or seeds to disguise any unappealing textures or flavours.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 08/04/2026 10:18

Thanks @teaandtoastwithmarmite and @Aparecium

I use the So Body Co Peptigen and this is pretty much what I do, but with Fybogel and a little bit of Orange and Pineapple diluting juice, I drink it short and cold so it's more like a shot than a drink. I usually follow it with a small glass of fresh orange as it's my first thing in the morning routine.

I did use the Elavate chocolate, but added a tea spoon to my regular hot chocolate (from velvetiser) as an additional booster, it blended well in this way.

ClearFruit · 08/04/2026 10:40

It's a scam.

piscofrisco · 08/04/2026 11:19

I’ve also had this issue with nutrition geeks collagen. I can taste it in everything and it’s lumpy no matter how much I whisk it. I’ve gone back to collagen gel now as it’s dissolves in hot water-with a bit of added juice to take away the taste and I also stick an iron sachet in there. It’s known as my concoction in our house.

Chewbecca · 08/04/2026 11:24

My consultant (rheumatology) specifically says don't bother!

Moveyourbleedingarse · 08/04/2026 12:53

@Chewbecca i went in with the exact same belief. Genuine surprise when he suggested it.

I’m another one using Nutrition Geeks tried others before and they were vile . Someone recommended me this one and I trusted them so yes it’s favourless and dissolving into my hot drink whatever I have it in.

isthesolution · 08/04/2026 13:46

Mixed it with a little orange juice and down it like a cheap shot

PenPaperIdeas · 08/04/2026 13:49

I started with Ancient and Brave, then moved onto Hunter Gatherer just for price then onto Nutrition Geeks which is the cheapest by far.

None of them have any taste when I put them into coffee but I can taste something if I put them in tea. Every morning I have a "collacoffee" using a bean to cup machine. When the milk is decanted in for my cappuccino I use a battery operated whisk, Dh uses a mini hand whisk. Dissolves easily.

SurleyTurnip · 08/04/2026 16:10

I get mine from Nutrition Geek, it just dissolves in my coffee when I stir it. No lumps.

Was the consultant prepared to prescribe it then, because if it does have an effect, then it should be able to be had on prescription.
