How do you take your collagen powder?

Moveyourbleedingarse · 08/04/2026 09:03

Posting here because I'm peri menopausal, on HRT and a consultant has recomended collagen to heal a tendon issue.

I'm guessing that there is a good distribution of people in the meno board who also take collagen...

So, how on earth do you mix collagen powder so it isn't lumpy and doesn't make you gag?

I bought the unflavoured one from Elevate. They sent a little whizzer thing.

I've tried whizzing it into slightly warm water - omg the smell, I gagged and tipped it down the drain.

I've tried tipping it into my coffee and it just formed lumps even when I mixed it. Went down the drain.

This morning I tried one of the sample chocolate sachets they sent, mixed with some cold milk using the whizzer. Still full of lumps, but also frothy which I dislike, and tasted like one of those diet hot chocolate sachets. Bleugh.

I am committed to taking this stuff to help with my tendon healing as per medical advice, but I really struggle to drink stuff that isn't 'normal'. I also had to give away my protein powder as I couldn't bring myself to swallow it 😬

Please lovely menopausal people, how do you take your collagen?

I have it mixed in yoghurt with fruit and muslie the chocolate tastes like mouse . Just stir it in. Didnt like it as a drink.

Was the consultant prepared to prescribe it then, because if it does have an effect, then it should be able to be had on prescription.

I shouldn't think so. It's a private consultant, he recommended it as he sees it being used by sports teams for tendon repair.

I'm not bothered about buying it, if I can stomach it and it makes a difference.

I use some from Sunna supplements. I paid £24 for a month's supply. There are often offers on Instagram etc.
I have mine in my morning coffee or tea. No taste and dissolves easily too. Nearly finished my first months supply. I signed up to a three months supply and will get a free gift each month. Have a free travel cup and e book about supplements so far.

Nutrition Geeks stirred into peppermint tea.

Paracetamol has a clinical effect, but it doesn’t get prescribed. Reducing carbs has a clinical effect on T2 diabetes, but it’s up to the patient to make and fund the change in their diet.

I have also had creatine and collagen recommended to me by HCPs and a Sports scientist (I don’t recall their grade). If it doesn’t harm, why not try it?

Iydrd · 09/04/2026 09:08

For those saying it’s a scam, I wasn’t on HRT and the only change I had was taking collagen on recommendation of a friend and my hair has started growing back. So I don’t believe it is

It's nice that your hair has grown.
However, it may be a coincidence.
Hair has a cycle of around a year anyway when it grows, is dormant, then sheds. It's also very sensitive, especially to stress, diet and hormone levels.

The *programme linked to has science behind it and the doctor who was commenting said that the research carried out by manufacturers is not up to the high standard of proper trials for medicine.

*There is another thread active at the moment about collagen and there are links to a BBC Radio 4 prog called Sliced Bread where they discuss it.

The other thread, with links.

'Has anyone found a collagen supplement that helps menopausal joint stiffness?'

I take a few powdered supplements & I make a little evening cocktail:
large glass of water & I add marine collage, magnesium & creatine. I flavour it with a water drop tab (Amazon) & drink. It’s nice.

Flatinbed · 09/04/2026 10:09

I stir it into miso soup. It hides the taste perfectly.

AnotherDeadSparrow · 09/04/2026 10:15

I’m trying Nutrition Geeks- I mix it with a little boiling water to dissolve, add some chocolate Nesquik powder, let it cool a bit and then add milk.
Chocolate Nesquik, what’s not to love? 😋

Spongblobsparepants · 09/04/2026 10:20

I use the Elevate chocolate powder. If I take it in the morning I put a tiny bit of boiling water on a teaspoon of coffee powder, top up with almond/oat/coconut milk and microwave for 1.5 minutes. Add the powder and whizz through. Tastes great to me. Evenings I just add to any warm milk and use the electric whisk.

Zanatdy · 10/04/2026 05:44

I have the nutrition geeks one - glow up, its not lumpy at all. I was worried about that. I have it in my tea, leaves a bit of a film on the top, and i’d say I can taste it, but its not a bad taste. I am 6wks in and notice a difference in my skin. I also have a potential tendon issue, needs more investigation but done nothing to help that, but a few people have commented on my skin and it does have a bit of a glow.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 10/04/2026 05:49

I use Wild Nutrition. I mix it into my morning glass of Berocca, slight taste, but nothing dreadful. I started taking it because I was losing so much hair, which has improved immensely.

twilightcafe · 10/04/2026 07:50

I have a teaspoon of marine collagen powder in the dregs of my morning cuppa.
Wild Nutrition collagen has little taste. I used to add it to a shot of juice but it's less faff to add it to tea or coffee.

Well I'm on day 6 of trying to get it right and I've wasted another 15g down the drain when I tried it with boiling water to make it dissolve, the smell was next level horrific!

I've tried again, I mixed it with cold water and the whizzer, then added it to my large coffee and heated it up. And it seems OK so far.

I didn't like it in overnight oats and the problem with that is that I often get halfway through breakfast and feel full so don't eat it all.

Forgot about the electrolyte tablet. It's getting it to dissolve that's the issue.

I might change to a different brand after this runs out.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 10/04/2026 08:11

And miso soup next! Have it as a mid morning snack at work.

OP posts:
Moveyourbleedingarse · 10/04/2026 08:25

And as a minute by minute update, I've found that as the coffee goes cold, I can sense the collagen and it makes me feel nauseous so I've heated the coffee again to get through it.

I so want this to work to help with my recovery but I'm so bloody useless at taking anything that doesn't come in tablet form!

I can take a whole handful of pills in one mouthful no issue at all. Swallow horse sized capsules. Never even get stuck. But dissolve something into a liquid and swallow it? My brain just feels like it wants to gag.

OP posts:
Iydrd · 12/04/2026 17:51

It sounds like this brand isn’t doing it for you. Persevere though. The nay sayers can neigh all they like but there’s got to be a reason that all these people are having success stories. If thinking of giving up, just give up on that brand.
@JinglingSpringbellsI’d be interested in the science of the one year hair regrowth thing though. I can actually see the baby hairs growing in where I have been balding.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 12/04/2026 18:11

I use elevate and tried it in my coffee, got lumps. Tried water and like you gagged.
I now have it in a pre-made protein shake and use a proper electric blender to mix, not the silly thing they sent.
it does alter the shake but not enough to make in undrinkable

doodleygirl · 12/04/2026 18:13

I use the chocolate Elevate, 150 ml cold milk, powder on top, stir a little then use the frother thing, it’s not my favourite taste but it’s not lumpy.

TheCurious0range · 12/04/2026 18:14

I use the nutrition geeks one, no lumps at all in coffee and I just stir with a spoon , I just have a pod coffee in the morning which is quite small so no time for it to go cold and if I'm on my way out I use a smash lidded coffee glass that keeps it hot. I put the powder in first then the coffee on top but sure if that makes a difference

MauveFatball · 12/04/2026 18:16

I use Nutrition Geeks, been using it for about 8/9 months now. After 6 months I thought it hadn’t made much difference to my joint pain so I stopped - the pain got worse! So bought some more and still in pain, hoping the benefits from before will kick in again soon 🤞
I have mine in my morning coffee, Costa Cappuccino made in my Tassimo machine. I stir it in slowly from a measuring table spoon that I leave in the packet. Once or twice I’ve had lumps form on top of the coffee, no idea why as I use the same method every time. As PP have said I can’t taste or smell it if I drink my coffee straightaway but if it gets too cold I find it tastes a bit sickly.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 13/04/2026 06:21

Hi all, I hit on a winner.

I make it the night before, add it to a bottle of water with a strong tasting electrolyte tablet in it and a squeeze of lemon juice, shake like mad, leave in the fridge overnight and no lumps by morning.

It made my coffee taste/feel revolting and I spent all of Saturday feeling incredibly nauseous. With the electrolyte tablet I down that in one go so I don't notice!!

Will presevere. I started shockwave therapy last week so this is to support that healing and the physio. No sign of reduced pain so far though 😂
