On xmas day i woke up to bloody sheets 😳 I'm 58 and period free for nearly 2 years.

A dull tummy ache on and off and a heavy period going on since then.

Ive googled and i will ring the docs on Mon for a chat with them about post meno bleeding but i wanted to ask here. The thing is about 2/3 weeks ago for a few days i had wildly tender boobs, huge nips and that heavy feeling when you take your bra off. Plus i was (TMI sorry) really wet with egg white stringy discharge like when you ovulate. This too has all also been absent for nearly 2 years.

I suppose im asking if anyone else thinks it sounds like this is a weird random period rather than the more scary things i've read about? I'm trying to settle my mind a bit. I've got to socialise at a big family do tomorrow and at the mo i'm really quite tearful.

Thank you.

Hi Please go see your GP it does need to be checked out probably all ok but after the weekend just make an appt

MollyButton · 26/12/2025 19:46

i echo see your GP asap. It might be nothing, but I have family history of the difference going to see a GP quickly and putting it off for months can make.

APatternGrammar · 26/12/2025 19:51

Have you got a teenage daughter? This happened to a friend of mine when her daughter got her period.

RollyPollyBatFace · 26/12/2025 20:03

This is overwhelmingly likely to be a surge in hormones. It’s really normal and everything to post points to that

so don’t worry unduly.

you’re doing totally the right thing in talking to your doctor though - so it’s important you do that but I don’t think you need to tie yourself up in knots

Bougainsillier · 26/12/2025 20:11

Sounds like the last hurrah OP but def get it checked. It will be a referral on the 2ww to your local post meno bleeding clinic for an ultra sound. Standard for all so don’t panic.
What rubbish timing… typical 🙄

Laiste · 26/12/2025 20:51

Thank you all so so much.
I've told DH it's not a good sign ect and he's being v loving but i can't keep on mithering about it, it's xmas!

Yes i do have a young adult DD3 living at home who's just had her period.

And weirdly the moment my eldest DD1 walked into the house yesterday morning for xmas day with us she came on for the first time in 3 months! (coil + random periods).

It's very periody here.
Yes what fucking shit timing. I had to strip the bed down to the mattress and wash all that reeling with shock while trying to be xmasy for everyone 🙄🙄

The ultra sound - is that like when you're preg or a vaginal one?

Puddledaf · 26/12/2025 20:58

Yes it happened to me post menopausal. Two week pathway was worried sick, had a vaginal scan turns out nothing sinister it was just a surge in hormones. Nothing since this was three years ago. Hope this helps.

Vaginal. They can see so much more and measure the thickness of your womb lining.

Namechange568899542 · 26/12/2025 21:20

As others have said GP, and likely nothing to be worried about and a hormone surge.

The other thing and utterly mental I know - any chance you could be one of those medical mysteries and somehow pregnant? Weirder things have happened…! I think the oldest person to carry a natural pregnancy to term in the U.K. was 59, but I’d imagine there have been quite a few others who have fallen pregnant and not been able to/chose not to continue the pregnancy.

Laiste · 26/12/2025 21:22

Ah.
Thank you again.

Vaginal. OK. I had one of those years ago. It wasn't too bad.

sigh

Its been very heavy but tonight it's slowing down a touch. This is ridiculous.

It's going to be hellish trying to get through to GP on mon morn isn't it?!

Defo doing the right thing getting it checked. I was just about to hit my 1 year period free milestone a couple of christmases ago only to have it arrive in all its glory on Christmas Day! When I mentioned it to the doctor when I had gone in about something else, she said it’s ALWAYS the bloody way! Hope you get seen quickly and all is well.

Laiste · 26/12/2025 21:24

Pregnant.?
Well i had DD4 12 years ago and was regular as clock work until it all stopped about 2 years ago.

Nahhh surely not ...

I mean the chance is slim to none! It was just a thought as I remember reading a thread on here where a midwife mentioned delivering a baby to a 56 year old woman who’s first knowledge of said pregnancy was when she was 5cm dilated after being admitted for what was assumed to be an ovarian cyst 🫣

Hope whatever it is is nothing though, as I’m sure it will be! 😊

ncduetooutingsituation · 26/12/2025 21:44

This happened to me just after I had Covid.
GP said it was fairly common after Covid.
It hasn’t happened again

landlordhell · 26/12/2025 21:54

With all the other symptoms it sounds like a rogue period. But as you know you must get it checked
Happened to me after 13 months. I had discharge and sore boobs and felt horny a week or so before. It was only light bleeding and I didn’t get it checked as it was only one month outside of acceptable. That was 3 years ago.

Oh wow well I have my two adult DDs here and they are both on their periods!! I will be on high alert now as it’s been 3 years.

fluffythecat1 · 27/12/2025 01:00

Definitely get in touch with the doctor, they will likely send you off for a trans abdominal/transvaginal scan, they take PMB seriously. It’s likely a hormonal surge, however 10% of the time it is cancer. 90% it isn’t of course. I’ve had two bouts of it and a polyp removed and am having ovarian cysts kept an eye on. No period for 7 years and then two in 6 months. The last one was tender breasts before, like you have had, felt hormonal, like a usual period. It’s probably fine but you have to get it checked out. It could be that like me, benign cysts are stimulating your estrogen hormone.

Iamafaithfull · 27/12/2025 14:32

Hi , I got mine back after a gap - not as long as two years , after having one of the covid vaccination jab .
. You haven’t had a vaccination jab recently have you ?
Either way as others have said , it will need checked out .

Laiste · 27/12/2025 20:35

No covid jabs no HRT, no.

Imagine thinking you've got a cyst and it turns out to be a pregnancy !!

Spent the day at inlaws doing big gathering. The bleeding has slowed a lot and (if it goes the way it used to) tomorrow will be the last day of bleeding. Although the first two days are/were always like a tap turned full on, at least the whole thing is/was all over after 4 days.

I've calmed down a lot. I'm getting the usual old late period horniness so i am thinking this is a hormone surge.
Interesting pp saying a polyp can cause this.

Docs tomorrow 🤞

Good luck with the doctor, 100% doing the right thing.

RadiologyStaff · 28/12/2025 14:08

That’s not a period, after 2 years period free that’s classed as a post-menopausal bleed and needs to be checked out. It’ll probably just be a quick ultrasound, and a few other tests, to rule out anything sinister.

Supersares · 28/12/2025 23:32

The exact same thing has happened to me OP. 10 months no period, was hoping I was on the home run in terms of menopause (I’m 53). About 3 weeks ago I was getting sore nipples and the egg white thing and was convinced I was ovulating. Then Xmas eve I came on, absolutely gutted. It’s been 5 days now and so heavy with cramps too. I won’t go to the doctors as I’m still peri but I’m so disappointed as was hoping and praying I was about to hit menopause.

Crispynoodle · 29/12/2025 00:05

I have to take steroids from time to time and they induced a very heavy period when I was going through the menopause
