Period after 2 years without ?!? Come and talk to me please?

On xmas day i woke up to bloody sheets 😳 I'm 58 and period free for nearly 2 years.

A dull tummy ache on and off and a heavy period going on since then.

Ive googled and i will ring the docs on Mon for a chat with them about post meno bleeding but i wanted to ask here. The thing is about 2/3 weeks ago for a few days i had wildly tender boobs, huge nips and that heavy feeling when you take your bra off. Plus i was (TMI sorry) really wet with egg white stringy discharge like when you ovulate. This too has all also been absent for nearly 2 years.

I suppose im asking if anyone else thinks it sounds like this is a weird random period rather than the more scary things i've read about? I'm trying to settle my mind a bit. I've got to socialise at a big family do tomorrow and at the mo i'm really quite tearful.

Thank you.

The exact same thing has happened to me OP. 10 months no period, was hoping I was on the home run in terms of menopause (I’m 53). About 3 weeks ago I was getting sore nipples and the egg white thing and was convinced I was ovulating. Then Xmas eve I came on, absolutely gutted. It’s been 5 days now and so heavy with cramps too. I won’t go to the doctors as I’m still peri but I’m so disappointed as was hoping and praying I was about to hit menopause.

I would still recommend going to the GP. A 10 month break is a long time and it’s worth checking out. Anything unusual I would get looked into. I had a PMB at 52 after 7 years of no periods (on the POP pill continuously), which I thought was odd and the doctor sent me for a scan. It came back as abnormal and I had a polyp removed, biopsy etc. which was clear thankfully. They’re now monitoring an ovarian cyst, though don’t need another scan for a year. It’s probably nothing, but good to take advice and to rule things out.

I haven't rung the doctors.

I know i know i know i know i know i know i know i know

I can hear you all! But hang on.

My reasons are as follows:
a) On Sunday eve I dug out my 2024 diary and went through the whole thing page by page and noted all my period dates and my last one was actually late June '24, so it is over a year ago, but by 5/6 months. (i thought it was 2 years + since my last one)

Secondly we're just so busy this week with visitors and visiting that a docs appt. would be really awkward. We're lucky that we can usually get a same day appt. but you ring at 8 and have to take what you're given there and then iyswim? No use me saying oh i can't do half 10 today cos we'll be half way down the M40 by then ect ect.

I've talked to DH and said i'll wait and see.

Thank you so much to everyone sharing their stories and experiences. I appreciate it so much. So many xmas day and eve ones too!

Im not ruling out docs completely. I think i just want xmas and new year time out of the way and not ruined any more than it is/was by doctor appointments.

The bleeding has stopped now. It was heavy first 2 days then down to a trickle for day 3 as is usual for me. Spotting then until it's stopped.

Yeah I get you OP. I was 13 months past last period and didn’t seek help. This was 2 years ago and hasn’t happened since. I had the same symptoms to you so it was obvious to me that it was a hormone surge- I actually enjoyed the feelings of experiencing ovulation again and DH was v happy!! 😂 The vast majority of women are fine and the screening is invasive but we all know we should . If it happened now I probably would get it checked but one month outside of ‘ its normal’ wasn’t a worry for me.

Have you got a teenage daughter? This happened to a friend of mine when her daughter got her period.

I love this.. how our bodies communicate with others

Marylou2 · 30/12/2025 11:16

No chance that you're on Weight loss injections OP? I got the shock of my life with bleeding at 57. Apparently quite a common side effect. All checked out and fine though and only happened once. Sorry if not.

Laiste · 30/12/2025 11:16

Yeah it does feel so much like a late random period. Im happier in myself and my tummy's less bloated now and boobs are normal and i'm not hangry any more! I was a nightmare before xmas!

I mean this thread has made me see the importance of keeping a proper eye on this. But also i feel i don't want to leap to the docs. yet.

Just very recently i've been able to stop doing something very very stressful in my life and i'm wondering if that's something to do with it? It sounds daft but last time that happened (giving up a stressful thing)(the same stressful bloody thing actually!) i fell preg the very next cycle after 2.5 years of TTC!

I don't know. Our bodies are weird.

I’m just going to give you my experiences. I have recently had surgery to remove no less than 18 polyps from my womb after I had a bleed after five years without. I did, however, bleed for 3 plus weeks. Fortunately all benign. I’ve had breast cancer and this is a side effect of my medication. My aunt, however, had a bleed post menopause and it was uterine cancer. While I understand wanting to get Xmas/NY out of the way, it is also something you really must address asap. It could be all manner of reasons but you have to make sure you don’t have cancer. I had a transvaginal ultrasound to start with and then a hysteroscopy under GA because of the amount of polyps that needed to be removed. It was a 2 hour surgery in the end. Just my two penneth!

landlordhell · 30/12/2025 12:35

If it were something wouldn’t the bleeding continue?

BillieWiper · 30/12/2025 12:40

I had a random period the other week. Really strongly felt like I was coming on for a few days. Massively swollen and almost painful boobs, then a four day period. Weird. 🤔
I haven't had one in about a year and then it was only one early last year so was hoping that's the end but maybe not.

I feel totally fine so didn't go to the doctor's but if you are a bit concerned it's a good idea to get checked out. It's probably nothing bad. Just a random surge of hormones or something?!

landlordhell · 30/12/2025 12:35

Not necessarily. My aunt had a one off bleed. She had uterine cancer. I believe it’s less likely but it’s not certain.

fluffythecat1 · 30/12/2025 13:10

Ovarian and uterine cancer often have very few symptoms apart from post menopausal bleeding. 10% of PMBs are due to cancer. When I was investigated, I was stunned to see that there was a whole hospital department for postmenopausal bleeding. Medical professionals often go by the rule that it is ‘cancer unless proven otherwise.’

landlordhell · 30/12/2025 14:19

Yes I understand but in my case it was 13 months after last period and I’d had pms , sore boobs and the thin discharge associated with ovulation and a surge of horniness a couple of weeks before. It was clear to me it was a random period

localhere · 30/12/2025 14:26

I had the same symptoms as you before I had a period after 6 months free. I was told it’s not an worry until after 12 months period free. Two years is concerning. I would definitely call your GP.

Yes that is the time period( excise the pun) BUT it can still happen as our bodies don’t know the calendar.

Applecup · 30/12/2025 14:32

Any post meno bleeding warrants a check up and you will be put in the 2 week pathway. I had one after a year and like you had all the symptoms and just knew what it was. Doesn’t do any harm though to be checked out.

BahMinthumbug · 30/12/2025 14:34

Hi lovely

I had one period after 12 months then a second period after 12 months then it has been a further 18 months I think period-free, but it is like the mafia, just when I thought I was out bloody period returns, usually when my daughter is on, so hope I am on the other side now yet just like you, I had that heavy feeling and period pains just last week so never say never.
My daughter was menstruating last week so I do think my continued Mittelschmerz is connected to her somehow, unless it really is confirmation bias.
Either way, it sucks
Hope you are okay OP Shamrock
See you on the other side x

Thank you again to all you wonderful ladies ! ♥️ So wise and witty!

And a happy new year to you all as well 🎉 To everyone posting and lurking. Let 2026 be peaceful and bring contentment and wellness 🥳

I will go to the docs, i know i will. i'm a strange one in that i tend to always wait till the pressures off before i'll react to something. I'm incredibly calm even in a horrendous crisis and people are often impressed, but it's just this weird delayed reaction thing. It can be very useful, but it can also look as if i'm not 'doing' or feeling anything about something.

When i feel everyone's forgotten about it - a week or two - i'll take a deep breath and go. I'll get there.
