What's the longest lasting period anyone has had in perimenopause?
I'm 52, still fairly regular but I've been on my period for 4 weeks now.
I've spoken to the doctor and she talked about an ultrasound but hasn't actually referred me for one . I've had a period lasting 3 weeks before and was given tablets to stop it which didn't work.
I don't have hot flushes

Chase up ultrasound to rule anything else out.
longest ever period - some people just keep bleeding but it’s intermittent - you want to avoid becoming anaemic.
have you considered HRT x x

I've just come on, and checked my period app, as I thought it wasn't that long since I was last on, and since February, I've been on for 2 weeks, not on for 2 weeks, then on for 2 weeks etc. I'm going to phone the GP next week for an appointment as its getting me down. I'm 47

bridgeywhale · 21/06/2025 23:05

About six or seven weeks, had ultrasound, nothing untoward, just menopause- it’s happened a few times since too.

Bogocz1 · 22/06/2025 02:05

It's never been suggested

All you'll get is it's your age

Mine was a month. Had to get the tranexamic tablets from the gp as for about a week, I had such heavy bleeding that I was bleeding through a tampon and pad. That slowed it but didn’t stop it. Got another tablet a week or two later which did stop it. I was referred for a scan but I’ve not heard anything yet.

Bogocz1 · 25/06/2025 07:23

Not sure what tablets they gave me last time but it was a strip.rather than one tablet and they didn't do anything.

6 weeks here, but it wasn't consistent bleeding, just a bit in the morning, every morning. It felt draining, but I hadn't had a period for about 6 months before that. So I put it down to that. That was over two years ago and I m still getting bleeds.

Bogocz1 · 25/06/2025 11:47

I just feel a mess

How did you go on about sex?

OP posts:
menopausalfart · 25/06/2025 11:53

My periods are all over the place. I'm not monthly anymore, can lightly bleed for a couple of weeks, and can completely miss one. I'll be glad when they stop.

CreationNat1on · 25/06/2025 17:27

During that 6 week time I didn't have sex.

I ld just started a new job and I felt drained. Take multi vits, eat as well as you can. Look after yourself.

So I'm seven weeks in and still bleeding, went heavy but now it seems to have gone light again. Doctor has ordered an ultrasound,. prescribed some tablets to try and stop it and a blood test to check hormones and thyroid

So doc has given me tablets to stop my period which have actually worked. My blood have come back and my fsh levels are very high.
I have to have a telephone appointment with the doctor.

From November to May. I've been fainting and all sorts. Recently had an MRI nothing sinister, waiting on hysteroscopy and biopsy... I've been on Norethisterone for nearly 3 months now.

TheBuffetInspector · 14/07/2025 23:20

2 months not 3.

BruFord · 14/07/2025 23:32

I’m glad that you’re having an ultrasound, @Bogocz1 and that the current medication is working.

It could be fibroids perhaps? Prolonged bleeding is often a symptom.

Maybe, the elevated levels suggest post menopause so says Dr Google but since I'm still having periods Dr Google says it could be PSO. I'll have to wait and see what the doctor says.

That's what she's given me, about a weeks supply. One three times a day but it's making me really ratty

My periods were all over the place, 10 days on 12 off, 6 on again. I’m 47. The gp put it down to perimenopause and wasn’t overly concerned, but it started interfering with life too much so I asked to go on the progesterone only pill. The first month I had a 10 day period, next about a week, now in the third month I’m down to spotting for a few days. I can definitely recommend it.

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 16/07/2025 13:32

@Ladybyrd My GP has prescribed this today, so I'm pleased to hear it's working for you. Fingers crossed it does for me, too. She did suggest changing my (copper) coil to a mirena, but I'm going to try this pill first

Bogocz1 · 24/07/2025 20:55

Took the Norethisterone which stopped the period. Finished the course and now I've come on again which she said would happen but I'm flooding, super tampon soaked through in an hour, and really bad cramps. Is that normal?

Did you or anyone find it made you itchy? I fished the course early this week but I'd started being really itchy. The itching seemed to settle a bit but I've been put back on it because when my period started it was too heavy and painful. Now I seem to be itchy again.

OP posts:
Bogocz1 · 01/08/2025 22:28

Finished the course of Norethisterone and OMG the period afterwards was terrible, ended up in a&e in terrible pain, not just cramps, and clots like golf balls. Guess what? She gave me the same tablets again to stop it but just a weeks supply. Finished them and same thing is happening again, massive clots and blood just pouring out. I'm using a maternity pad with period pants and cloths just to get through a 12 hour shift at work because I can't go home I'll again.

OP posts:
Notsurewheretostarthere · 01/08/2025 22:36

@Bogocz1 haven't you pushed for an ultrasound?
This could possibly be solved by removing fibroids etc

You can get Transexamic Acid which stops bleeding without the moods swings from Norehistetone.

It's possible that your ferritin is through the floor which leads to exhaustion and low immune system and hair loss/poor nail growth.

Did GP do check for Anaemia? Are you taking iron tablets?

I would absolutely not put up with that much bleeding. I went on HRT when I started getting three periods in 6 weeks when I was 43.
