I’m 48. Is this pregnant or menopause?

I am 48. Came of the pill in September last year. Periods only returned and became regular since January. I’m a week late. Everything screams perimenopause. But I did a test on pregnancy. Am I over thinking this?

Helpful if any ladies going through similar and think it’s peri menopause. I’m confused.

It's a positive pregnancy test why are you confused? Presumably you have been having unprotected sex? Peri would not cause this.

REDB99 · 28/05/2025 08:00

I don’t think perimenopause causes pregnancy hormones.

Gulliver88 · 28/05/2025 08:01

Congratulations.

I think because I have read a few things online saying being peri menopause and my age, can create a false positive.

It is rare but you can get a false positive due to menopause. But given it is rare then best to treat a positive as a positive and then take it from there.

It would be a high risk pregnancy so you could be in for an emotional rollercoaster. How are you feeling about this?

screwyou · 28/05/2025 08:04

Do you want to be pregnant op?

Dibbs76 · 28/05/2025 08:07

James my partner is moving in end of June. My 3 children are aged between early to mid twenties. Feeling a bit confused at the moment. I thought perhaps this is the start of irregular periods re peri menopause. I took a test last night and negative. So because it is early I took this in my first urine this morning.

Screw you in honesty I’m not sure. Regardless I would love any child I have and would count my myself extremely lucky. It would also be my partners first child and my fourth. But I only came off the pill to track my periods and peri menopause. We have been sensible.

I thought this was a bit harsh and then realised it was a username!

Every website / forum is different. Impossible to know them all. I’m the same age and can only imagine the turmoil you are feeling right now. Good luck with the journey.

Ohmygodthepain · 28/05/2025 08:33

I've never taken so many pregnancy tests since I started perimenopause. Partner has had a vasectomy and chemo so pretty sure I can't get pregnant, but still a teeny risk.

Aren't there supposed to be 2 lines for pregnant?

JinglingSpringbells · 28/05/2025 08:43

We have been sensible.

Meaning?

merrymelody · 28/05/2025 08:46

If you’re still having monthly periods, then I’d say that you are pregnant.

@JinglingSpringbells sorry I meant using protection. Purely as I am trying to track my periods for peri menopause

Happened to my cousin a few year ago at 47 she now has a 3 year old dd. I would get thee to a GP and see if they can do bloods to confirm. Good luck op x

Dibbs76 · 28/05/2025 08:52

@Ohmygodthepain The second line is there but faint. I should have started my period on 22nd

Every single time- condoms? Used properly every single time and not splitting or tearing? No foreplay without wearing one?

JinglingSpringbells · 28/05/2025 09:10

I'd wait a couple of weeks and see what happens, then see your GP.
Sadly, a lot of pregnancies in older women aren't viable.

dontcryformeargentina · 28/05/2025 09:10

Congratulations x

Dibbs76 · 28/05/2025 09:21

@JinglingSpringbells yes I was thinking of doing that. I won’t tell my partner until I have done that in 2 weeks. Good advice, thank you
