Cycle lengths during Perimenopause

HappyDaysAreAhead · 15/04/2025 09:33

My cycle lengths have shortened after being fairly regular. I'm late 40s.

Would you be able to share your age and if your cycles have gone shorter, longer, missing etc?

If anyone whose periods has stopped is reading, can you share your experience? I.e. shorter periods for a year followed by missing periods followed by none etc?

I'm trying to gauge how it mostly happens.

I'm 50.

Nothing so far this year. X3 light ones last year. X6 year before.

I think from 45 until now it went from erratic and long (had two per month at times) to short. Some very heavy few years ago to very light now.

CyberStrider · 15/04/2025 16:44

Just posting as I'm interested in the responses.

I'm 45 and mine have just started being 24/25 days over the last few cycles instead of 28 on the dot.

JeremiahBackflip · 15/04/2025 16:46

44, cycle length shortened from around 38 days to now around 28 days on average. They shortened before I went on HRT, now I'm on it periods are much lighter. But go on for 8 days.

shellyleppard · 15/04/2025 16:49

Hi I'm 56 and post menopausal. My longest time between periods was 60 days, then two the next month. Then anything from 14 days apart to 3 months. Very erratic with perimenopause. I had the coil in the end because of severe heavy flooding. Then nothing for two years, then bled lightly for a day and done

BowTiesPinkTail · 15/04/2025 16:51

I'm 45 and my last two main periods have been about 28 days apart but I have had two very odd bleeds ( not even sure I would call them periods - just blood when I wiped) at the two week point between them. I'm definitely perimenopausal (hot flushes, night sweats etc 😭)

incognito50me · 15/04/2025 16:54

I am 49; since 45, my cycles have gradually shortened to 21-22 days (I used to have 26-27 day cycles). My gynecologist offered progesterone last year to counteract this a bit and also to help with sleep (no estrogen, so no full HRT for me). Since then, the cycles have been at 28 days with an occasional 23-25 day "breakthrough" cycle.

My latest cycle, however, was 56 days - no bleeding after progesterone - so I'm wondering whether the skipping cycle part of perimeonopause is upon me.

MiddleAgedDread · 15/04/2025 16:55

48 and anything between 19 and 40 days in the last year or so. I’ve been on HRT for just over 2 years but switched types about 5 months ago so I’m hoping some of the recent changes might be due to adjusting to that.

Lighttodark · 15/04/2025 16:56

My periods have shortened from consistently being 28ish days to anywhere between 24-28 days age 38/39. As it’s still within the normal range (21-35 days) does this indicate peri?

garlicbreadsticks · 15/04/2025 20:36

I am 49 and my period used to come every 31 days. Now it’s every 28 days. I don’t have any perimenopause symptoms but my periods started when I was 17 and half.

I wonder how far I am from my last one then?

Mine have gone shorter in length but I'm not missing any yet. Probably having 12/13 cycles a year but I've had perimenopause symptoms for about 6 years.

Me too. I've had perimenopause symptoms for about 6 years but no sign of missing any?

Not necessarily. Just a fluctuating cycle. Do you have any other perimenopause symptoms?

Mine started at 11 but my cycles have shortened but no sign of missing any cycles yet.

I feel as though I want them to stop in one way but not in another!

My cycle was always relatively short at 23 days but in last few years before HRT were anywhere between 16 and 45 days. HRT seemed to have settled them into a more regular pattern of 28 days but out of sync with patches again. 45 so still think I’ve print it got some way to go!

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 16/04/2025 13:46

I'm 47, and have been having peri symptoms for a few years. I have a Mirena which skews things a bit (as my periods did stop with that for first 5 years) but my cycle has gone from regular as clockwork 35 days with v heavy periods, to 21-23 days with fairly light (but long) periods. I generally bleed for 9 or 10 days out of every 21-23 days.
I do occasionally miss one completely, and go 50ish days without. I quite like it when that happens.
I've been on oestrogel since October, and need to ask for more progesterone as I don't think I get what I need from the Mirena.

WonderingWanda · 16/04/2025 13:50

I'm 46. My cycles have got shorter, gone from regular 28 days to erratic but almost always shorter than 28 days for the last few years. My periods are much heavier (need transexamic acid) but shorter around 3 days. I wish they would just stop to be honest. Gp has told me I'm a bit young for perimenopause 🙄

Pms symptoms Inc anxiety/lower mood, previously had none.

TokyoKyoto · 16/04/2025 14:49

For the past few years, cycle length of anything from 15 to 70 days. Long cycle length more common than short. Periods much heavier. Then one day I went past 70 days and have not looked back. Am 53.

BuzzYourGirlfriendWoof · 16/04/2025 15:11

I’ve not long turned 40 and my consistent 28 day cycle has suddenly switched to c. 21 days 😩 it starts with light pink spotting for a few days, then regular period. Not amused!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/04/2025 16:14

I'm 42 and my cycle has been going nuts since age 39. Longer and then shorter, some double length gaps too. I rather think I'm in for the long haul on this perimenopause lark...

user31908734289 · 16/04/2025 16:26

I’m 48.

At 38 periods got really heavy and close together, about 22/23 day cycle for two or three years. Then became lighter and further apart in my early 40’s - personal record of 160 day cycle! Thought it was finished but no, started again and has been on average a 55 day cycle for the last three or four years, with an occasional 30 day or 90 day just to keep me guessing.

englishmummyinwales · 16/04/2025 16:38

I’m now 56 and haven’t had a period for 5 years. At 47 I had a 17 day period which I would describe as two periods back-to-back. I went to the GP who said it was the start of peri menopause and to keep notes on how my cycles went. I’ve thrown the notes away now but I remember nothing changed for several months afterwards. Then I would just miss one occasionally, then back to normal for a while. Then I went three months without one, followed by six months of being very regular. I had an eight month gap and thought it might be the end but then had a short one, then three ordinary ones, bang on 28 days in between and then that was it - nothing to indicate it might be over. Based on the previous eight month gap, I expected one would eventually come again (I have a friend who had a two year gap between her penultimate and final one) but it didn’t and after two years I decided it must be over. I’ve been very lucky and had no other menopausal symptoms. It isn’t always hell - you just need to constantly carry a sanitary towel around, just in case!

BruFord · 16/04/2025 16:41

I’m 51 this year. I still have regular periods every 27-28 days but they only last four days now (previously seven).

I’m waiting to see what happens next. As PP’s have said, always carry sanitary products just in case!

Summertimeblahness · 18/04/2025 19:09

46, they got heavier, then shorter, then 5 months of no period, then one day a month for the last three months.

camerontucker · 18/04/2025 19:56

I'm 52, periods every 28 days until the last six months when they were shorter times in between but only by a few days. This month it just didn't appear. Had all the symptoms just no blood. I'm hoping this is them stopping. Got my period when I was 12, I've done my time!
