Does menopause anxiety and depression ever go away

Hi,
I just want to know if the anxiety and depression and mental health caused by menopause will ever go away?

Not gone away completely unfortunately but HRT made a massive difference but it didn’t go suddenly… I’d been suffering since it started out of the blue since my late 30’s, and let it get really bad over a fair few years..really wish I had not waited. I feel so much better now and not on Ad’s

I was put on SSRIs in my early 40s and at 52 have just finally had a med professional admit that sudden anxiety and depression in early 40s is due to peri. Now on HRT and hoping to drop the last 5mg of citalopram

Ilovelowry · 21/03/2025 19:55

Mine has lifted massively on HRT, plus counselling.

But I have been very shaken by the peri meno symptoms. Then the year of trying to get the HRT right which involved suicidal thoughts on Utrogestan.

Then health issues that came from the meno stuff.

I don't think I'll ever be the same person again.

An Ashwagandha supplement made my perimenopausal anxiety symptoms pretty much entirely go away.

I’m on 20g fluoxetine and Femoston HRT. I’ve gone from crying all day and fantasising about dying to having loads of energy and being normally cheerful.
My brain still doesn’t work as well as it used to but I feel so much better.
You'll get there op! 💜

Aren’t you in menopause forever after your period stopped? Meno- menstrual cycle / Pause - stopped

Oh my god I had suicidal thoughts on Utrogestan too. I have never come across anyone else who felt as shocking on this as I did. I took the gel and then the tablets but I felt so poorly on the tablets that I would have thoughts of leaving my family in the middle of the night and walking and walking and walking and throwing myself off a bridge. The urge was strong. It was really awful.

Can I ask what you found that works for you?

I am currently trialing the patches and feel great on the 2 weeks of estrogen but not so great on the 2 weeks of progesterone. The low mood is difficult and the tiredness is off the scale. I feel like a walking zombie until I switch back to the estrogen patches.

I am so fed up and wonder if I will ever feel human again.

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/03/2025 16:02

@kalokagathos
i thought once 5 years since your last period was considered “post” but I may have made that up!

Does menopause anxiety and depression ever go away
Ecotype · 22/03/2025 19:37

I didn’t take hrt as history of beast cancer in my family. I have suffered extreme anxiety and depression during perimenopause and menopause. After 4 years I’m starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Gaps between each anxious/depressive episode is definitely getting longer and each episode is not so severe. It’s definitely better in the better weather too. Hang in there. I think it does get better.
