Peri-menopause or hormonal imbalance? My period won't stop...

Hello ladies, looking for some help or advice.

I have been having irregular and heavy periods for the last 4 years since having my copper coil removed (I was 39 and me and my husband were TTC). Everything was hunky dory before that - regular as clockwork and bled for 5/6 days until the next month. Since the removal I skip months of periods, then have a massive bleed where I am flooding and passing clots that are so big to the point I can feel them bursting out of me and they push out tampons. GP's have prescribed tranexamic acid (which never ever works) and I have now been bleeding fairly heavily since 17th June with no end in sight.

Could this be peri? I have no other symptoms and the GP just last week said my blood test results did not suggest menopausal or close to. I don't really want to go back on birth control as we would still love a baby although I now have DOR and an AMH of 0.2 so its not likely to happen. Or have I got a hormonal imbalance and would it be worth perhaps going on the mini pill for 2/3 months to try and balance out my hormones? What can I take to stop the bleeding and give me a break..Its affecting everything, work, my social life and wanting to go anywhere in fear of flooding not to mention my relationship with my dh.

Thanks for reading xx

Hi, sorry to hear about your problems. Ask your GP for a scan. You can be early menopause, but can be something causing your heavy bleeding. Are you still bleeding from 17th June till now? How times do you change your pads, tampons? I went for a scan and the doc told me I have fibroids, small.. and told me not to worry! I am having irregular heavy and light periods and I'm peri.. this month is longer periods. Have to ask GP to book me to see a gynecologist. I read somewhere a tablet/pill stops your period for a short time. Temporary, can't remember the name. Maybe others who are reading this, can give suggestion and advice.

Hi @Gen888 thanks for you reply.

I have been referred to a gynecologist, just waiting on an appointment to come through.

Yes I have been bleeding everyday since 17th June but GP don't seem phased by it. I'm hoping for it to slow down soon as like I said it is affecting everything at the moment. I will look into a pill to stop it even just for a break x

Khanny,

How are you lately? Have you found out the cause of your problem? Is it hormone imbalance? Take care, x

Khanny · 06/08/2024 21:54

@Gen888 hi and thanks for asking..
I actually have a blood test in the morning due to the clot size and texture that I have been having although I have now stopped bleeding (phew!) I bled from 1st June to 10th July apart from a couple of days where I stopped in between but it started up again. I was also going to ask they can test my iron as I am wanting to smell things such as petrol, engines, smoke etc and I read that is can be a sign of anemia. It makes my mouth water🙈
How are you getting on? Xx

OP posts:
Gen888 · 09/08/2024 19:49

I was anaemic and had to take iron sup prescribed from my GP. I think it was the heavy periods on and off with some clots. Now it is lesser. Our body can mess with us! My ultrasound is delayed, but I'm having some blood tests on the safe side. Remember to eat more iron and vitamin c food. 🙂x

Khanny · 11/08/2024 09:12

@Gen888 i had a call from the doctors on Friday to say my blood test results are abnormal and i have a call with the gp tomorrow to discuss. I have had a look on the nhs app at my results and my levels are all below what they should be so I’m presuming I am low in iron also. Will see what tomorrow brings…

Hi, how are you feeling today? Do u need to increase you iron level or take tablets? Like Tranexamic acid or coil. I think some people use either.
Take care. Chat soon. x

@Gen888 as I expected I am anemic, one of my full blood count levels was down at 2ug/L when it should be between 10 - 322ug/L and a few other results were low (all iron related). I have been out in a course of 3 months iron tablets and am awaiting an appt with the gynaecologist. I have tranexamix acid but I dont find it helps and I’m not wanting the coil as we have been ttc for a long time. Hope you’re well x

Go to Holland & Barrett and get some Floradix it works so much quicker than iron tablets it will give you a real boost as the tablets kick in.

Hi Khanny

Ive also been suffering with long heavy periods with clots. The worst one was 40 days 😫

Norethisterone stopped mine in 24 hours. The GP prescribed this for me. I started to get very anxious about the bleeding and the GP told me that if Norethisterone successfully stops bleeding this is a good sign as it is likely due to hormones rather than anything more serious. I’ve also since had blood tests and pelvic/uterus scans and everything is fine.

Sorry to hear you’re going through this.

Gingerkittykat · 17/08/2024 01:27

I took provera tablets when I had huge peri bleeds like you describe, the only problem is I think it would make you infertile when you take it as it is progesterone tablets.

monkeyblonde · 17/08/2024 05:44

@CanISayOfHerFace can I ask what dosage of Norethisterone you were prescribed?

CanISayOfHerFace · 17/08/2024 07:24

@monkeyblonde Of course, 5mg tablets, one tablet, three times a day. I was amazed how quickly it worked. Once I stopped taking it (10 days I think) I had a sort of breakthrough bleed (around 3-5 days of light/medium flow) then my cycle was “normal” for a few months.

Thanks for the reply. Did you start whilst you were still bleeding?

CanISayOfHerFace · 17/08/2024 07:29

@monkeyblonde Yes, I was bleeding for 40 days and every day it felt like it was getting worse and it was making me really anxious. Plus I wanted to get a scan and this wasn’t possible until it had stopped.

Ive also taken it again since when I got to 20 days of bleeding.

Thanks - did you take it cyclically or just as a one off?

CanISayOfHerFace · 17/08/2024 07:44

@monkeyblonde I’ve taken it twice, both times because the bleeding went on for so long. It’s not something you take every cycle.

@CanISayOfHerFace thank you for the advice. I don’t know why my gp has never prescribed norethisterone as I have been having this problem for a good couple of years now. I will certainly mention it though, thank you x

Was a reason ever found for the prolonged/heavy bleeding? Having same issue at the minute. Hoping its my pcos. Will they not do an internal scan if you are bleeding?

Hi, nothing was found or confirmed for me, I haven’t actually had a bleed for 3 months since I last posted so I am definitely putting it down to my age. Nothing was found on scans both external and internal and I have had my bloods tested which other than the anemia were all okay. Hope you get some answers x

Thats great to hear. I have been flooding for about a week now after continual spotting from mid July - coincidentally after my smear which was normal. Gp put me on the mini pill which is when the bleeding started getting heavier, also having night sweats. On the 2 week pathway for an internal scan and really worried.

I hope you sort out your health problems, hormone imbalance can be the cause or if you are perimenopause.
