Has anyone had their first tattoo at the age of 50?

I'm pretty sure I'm menopausal, periods have just about stopped. I've had a horrendous year health-wise, two life saving operations in three months (and more to face) and I've decided I'd like a tattoo on my lower forearm.

The question is, am I going to look like a complete mid life crisis weirdo? I have no children so no one who can mock me, only an 80 year old mother who I will delight in pissing off 😅

My husband has at the grand old age of 54. They look good.
I have 2 & got my first at 30. I want another. Don't over think it just do it.

Chocs44 · 17/08/2023 19:43

Go for it! I got my first at 50 to celebrate my milestone birthday!

PollyCreo · 17/08/2023 19:43

Oh thank you 😊 I've been thinking about it for a while, long before I got ill. Where are yours?

I did and loved it.
Went in for a small bee and ended up with something else...go for it.

I did, at 49, on inner wrist.
I knew it was bigger than I wanted but went ahead and now, some years later, am going through the pain and expense of having it removed!

Oh god! I'm not rushing into anything and I know I need to do my research properly 🧐

Ive just had 9th tattoo and im 54 soon. Life is too short if you want it, get a recommendation for a good artist, pick what you want and get it booked oh and don't forget to come back and show us your design 😁

Something like this:

Thats lovely, you can ask them to tweak it so you get exactly what you want, they are always happy to personalise it what you want. Not sure where you are but happy to pm you with my tattoo shop.

I'm nearly 40 and considering it for that. Though I don't plan to tell anyone but my teenage children (who approve) and I think I'd get it somewhere like shoulder or back where it's hidden. If that doesn't sound silly.

I had an extra ear lobe piercing too recently, so it does feel slightly midlife.

Definitely get it if you want it! If you're absolutely sure. I think I am.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 17/08/2023 20:06

I bloody hate most tattoos but I'm contemplating getting a teeny one for my upcoming 60th.

hby9628 · 17/08/2023 20:10

Mines my inner wrist & my ankle. I love the fine line tattoos that's what I'm thinking of next

BobbleForAHat · 17/08/2023 20:11

My sister did and I was shocked to my core. I had one done when I was 21. Her god daughter died aged 20 and she honoured her with a tattoo of one of her drawings. It is beautiful. I said I never thought I would see the day when she would get one and she said sometimes in life things happen that make you do things you never thought you would.

Do it, life is too short.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 17/08/2023 20:19

Me! Got mine at 50. Only small bit reminds me of a fantastic once in a lifetime holiday last year. I quite fancy another one now despite always being anti-tattoo up until now.

Jackydaytona · 17/08/2023 20:21

I'm considering a star wars rebel sign

😃

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 17/08/2023 20:23

I had one when I was about 42. A little butterfly where my leg becomes my hip if that makes sense.

Kedece2410 · 17/08/2023 20:27

My Mum got her first tattoo at 70 and her sister was 73 🙄

Probably half the women I know. It is a bit of a cliché.

I suspected it might be! Mine will be hidden anyway. I'm not brave enough to have it on display.

nodogz · 17/08/2023 20:42

Tattoo shops are generally nice, chilled places. You'd be very welcome. I like getting piercings on a whim and it's always a nice, friendly vibe when I go in and I'm middle aged. I've gone in wearing smart work clothes, nice stuff or trackies and been treated equally nicely.

Maybe follow a few shops/tattooists on insta and start a convo when you like their work. Or stop a stranger with good tatts and ask who did them.

I'm celebrating being alive. I had a ruptured appendix in May and just recovering from a double mastectomy last month, I don't care if I'm a bit of a cliche 😂

I'm 53 and I got my first one this Easter - on my shoulder.

I love it so much; far more than I thought I would, so have just had a fine line tattoo of leaves and flowers on my lower leg to cover up some nasty broken capillaries and varicose veins.

Go for it!
