Has anyone had their first tattoo at the age of 50?

I'm pretty sure I'm menopausal, periods have just about stopped. I've had a horrendous year health-wise, two life saving operations in three months (and more to face) and I've decided I'd like a tattoo on my lower forearm.

The question is, am I going to look like a complete mid life crisis weirdo? I have no children so no one who can mock me, only an 80 year old mother who I will delight in pissing off 😅

Got mine when I was 57 to honour my best friend who died of breast cancer aged 58. Dont regret it for a second. A sprig of lily of the valley above my right ankle

Chocs44 · 17/08/2023 20:52

I've got a sprig of lavender on my ankle. I think it's a bit addictive as I fancy another one now!

My uncle got a hand tattoo at the age of 60, bless him. It’s a cute animal too 🤣

@PollyCreo I've just remembered my last chat with my piercer - she mentioned she loves working on middle aged ladies (or women in general) as they are brave, tough and non-flinching! I got complimented on taking a rook like a champ!

I'm also contemplating the late middle age tattoo!

Do you need to start off small or can you go big from the beginning?!

I'm 53 and I got my first one this Easter - on my shoulder.

I love it so much; far more than I thought I would, so have just had a fine line tattoo of leaves and flowers on my lower leg to cover up some nasty broken capillaries and varicose veins.

Go for it!

Ooh @LilacpointMummy I've been thinking about doing something like that. Is it safe enough tattooing over thread veins? I have lots Sad

Would you post a pic or would that be too outing?

Loving all these stories! 🥰

It is ok to tattoo over thread veins but not varicose veins - she went round mine.
It has disguised them really well and I LOVE it!

Here's a photo of the front of it, although it does go all round my calf.

I got a deathly hallows and snitch as part of it because I'm a huge Harry potter/JK Rowling fan.

That's really beautiful LilacpointMummy! I've just been covering my legs up all summer because the thread veins get me down so much. I really like the idea of doing something like this so i'd want to get my legs out again

Greenwitchhorse · 17/08/2023 22:43

This is so interesting to read...

I have had various health issues as well in the past few years and around Christmas when I was quite sick I made myself the promise that if I pulled through I would get my first tattoo. I am 52...

I am now trying to decide what design to go for and where I want the tattoo!

Go for it.

Sorry to hear about your tough year and mastectomy. Just wondering if you've seen mastectomy tattoos? I don't know if they appeal to you or not but I've seen some beautiful ones.

Thank you @nenewname642 ! I'm so pleased I had it done.

cuckyplunt · 18/08/2023 08:01

I had one on my forearm last this year, I am 58. It’s teeny tiny but highly visible and I love it.

cuckyplunt · 18/08/2023 08:02

I’ve had a mastectomy, really considering getting that done now too.

Pandorapitstop · 20/08/2023 20:43

I had my first when I was 57, two years ago, and now I have 7, all quite big ones.
