Mirena - bleeding every day.. Dr no help..

I got the Mirena coil/IUD to solve heavy bleeding 2 months ago . I don’t otherwise feel I need HRT yet.
Since then I’ve bled every single day. It’s not a lot but way more than spotting and I am changing pads 2-3 times a day. I’ve always hated pads but constant tampon use isn’t ideal either. My consultant says it’s normal and might last a year (!!). He told me about “spotting” beforehand but a constant period is not spotting. I’m starting to think it was better beforehand even though it was hard leaving the house for 2 days a month.
Is there anything I can do to speed up this phase? I eat very well, don’t drink much, don’t smoke..
As well as generally feeling a bit crap about the constant bleeding, my sex life is now having the driest patch it’s every had. I’m depressed about it all.

So glad I found this thread - I have just been for a scan/biopsy and was told I need to have a polyp removed. The (lovely) doctor advised I could have a Mirena coil fitted at the same time if I want, but I think I’ll stick to Utrogestan pills (she said 200mg daily) with my Evorel patches after reading this - I’ve been bleeding for the last 3 months and I’m fed up of it!

TheCoffeeTableofDoom · 30/03/2023 09:01

I had a mirena for heavy bleeding and it was horrendous, I bled every day for 7 months. When I got it removed (sorry to shock you!) I haemorrhaged and had to go to hospital. Never again . I had a key hole hysterectomy then and have never looked back. Best decision I ever made, it turned out I had adenomyosis.

Mrsworried1 · 25/07/2023 16:59

Hi did your problems ever settle? I am
6 months in and have had spotting every two weeks, im currently having cramps, and a light period which I haven’t had in a few months, just spotting like a say. I’m fed up and disheartened after reading on here most people have no bleeding after 3-6 months! Or on the other side, if they have still been bleeding at 6month they’ve generally ended up getting it removed as it never stopped! I also have a 4 month wait to get back to gynae to discuss it 😭x@PeekAtYou

DustyLee123 · 25/07/2023 17:01

I had varying levels of spotting for 6/7 months, but I’m glad I stuck with it now.

Mrsworried1 · 25/07/2023 17:04

@DustyLee123 ive had it 6 months now and it did seem to be getting lighter, then this just came along and im feeling worried. I’m only 34 have had hysteroscopy and biopsy, and various consultants look down there and they all say nothings wrong with me and that the coil needed to be fitted to stop the bleeding- well it hasn’t 😭 next step ablation but I just have a horrible feeling they’re missing something like cervical cancer but they have said it’s virtually impossible to get that between clear smears and dismiss my worries everytime I see them! Xx

Talipesmum · 25/07/2023 17:04

Mine settled after 2-3 months and I’ve had barely any bleeding at all for 2 years so far. I think the OP posted again to say it settled down almost as soon as she had started the thread.

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/07/2023 17:07

I would stick it out for at least three months if you can . In the vast majority of cases the amount you bleed will have greatly reduced by then and hopefully the frequency likewise. I fit a lot of them, am happy to remove but it can take three months and sometimes up to six to really settle in.

HoobleDooble · 25/07/2023 17:12

I had the Mirena and had light spotting/bleeding every day for 3 months until the bleeding built up in a crescendo and my cervix spat the bloody thing out! I just take the mini pill now, have a light bleed every couple of months, am considering getting the jab next though.

Mrsworried1 · 25/07/2023 17:16

@yikesanotherbooboo - glad OPs seemed to settle- but- Can it be normal to bleed beyond the 6 months? I’ve had spotting every two weeks roughly for 6 months, sometimes get one week bleed free, sometimes 3 weeks. But I have just passed the 6 month mark, and I have sore breasts, cramp and a light period, heavier than the spotting and need to use a liner. I really thought it was slowing down. X

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/07/2023 17:36

@Mrsworried1 it can be normal but I would want to examine you to check that the mirena wasn't coming out or that there was no other cause of bleeding. I might arrange an ultrasound.

Mrsworried1 · 25/07/2023 17:40

my GP isn’t interested and gynae can’t see me until the end of November 😭 I might try a sexual health clinic x

EversoDetermined · 25/07/2023 17:42

I had bleeding/spotting for a few months then nothing, maybe 1 day a year of light spotting, honestly it has been amazing for me.

BigGapMum · 26/07/2023 08:48

The Mirena seems to really suit some women, but not everyone.
I was put under a lot of pressure to have one following a hysteroscopy. After a week I started getting pain and could no longer feel the strings. I think that it might have dislodged from the correct position and was digging into my uterus wall and went to the gynae emergency clinic, but they refused to scan me to check its position ( despite me being in a room with a scanner ) but did remove it when I insisted.
The NHS seem to be keen encourage Mirena use, but are not transparent in telling us the risks or disadvantages of having one, in my experience.
I wouldn't have one again.

I had the Merina fitted three months ago. This was for hyperplasia.Im 66. I am bleeding on and off and have awful mood swings. Help!!!

Katherineryan1986 · 26/12/2023 21:22

I had Mirena fitted almost 6 months ago as part of my HRT regime. before that I had a regular cycle - I’m 57.
Now I have been spotting / light bleeding for the whole of the 6 months - every day!
I had a polyp removed last year (before the Mirena was fitted) and I wonder if I have another.
I have just emailed my GP to ask for an ultrasound to check for polyps / fibroids and to check if the Mirena is in the right position.

Dwya64 · 30/12/2023 18:21

@JudyBlumesBlubber
i had Mirena fitted at 59 on 31/10/23 after being diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia - after insertion had no problems but a week later I started bleeding. I’ve had spotting/bleeding every day for 53 days now and have also been on oral Desogestrel for 3 weeks with a week left to go. I had my first mirena in 2013 and had it removed in 2022 during which time I had very few problems but looking back I did have spotting for the first 8 weeks. I know your post is some time ago but I’d like to know how you’re getting on!

Mrsworried1 · 01/01/2024 02:42

I have been bleeding most of the year now. Wish I could say it has settled but no… x
