Mirena - bleeding every day.. Dr no help..

I got the Mirena coil/IUD to solve heavy bleeding 2 months ago . I don’t otherwise feel I need HRT yet.
Since then I’ve bled every single day. It’s not a lot but way more than spotting and I am changing pads 2-3 times a day. I’ve always hated pads but constant tampon use isn’t ideal either. My consultant says it’s normal and might last a year (!!). He told me about “spotting” beforehand but a constant period is not spotting. I’m starting to think it was better beforehand even though it was hard leaving the house for 2 days a month.
Is there anything I can do to speed up this phase? I eat very well, don’t drink much, don’t smoke..
As well as generally feeling a bit crap about the constant bleeding, my sex life is now having the driest patch it’s every had. I’m depressed about it all.

This will not help, but I had the mirena coil years ago for contraception.

I had normal periods before I had it fitted. I bleed almost daily for 18 months. I also turned into a short tempered bitch.

2 days after having it removed my mood improved and the bleeding stopped and went back to normal.

My colleague at the time had the same problem.

PeekAtYou · 11/03/2023 15:57

I had a Mirena put in about a month ago for period issues too. My first period has lasted 3 weeks so far. I was told that it could take 9 months for things to settle (hospital consultant) but I can't see myself waiting that long for bleeding to stop.

Justmuddlingalong · 11/03/2023 16:06

I had one put in to control heavy but regular periods.
After 11 months of constant bleeding, the Dr agreed to remove it.

JuneFromBethesda · 11/03/2023 16:10

I’m having exactly the same experience @JudyBlumesBlubber - had a Mirena put in 2 months ago and have bled virtually every day since. It’s shit. Mine is part of my HRT regime, I didn’t even have problematic periods so honestly I’d rather go back to how it was before.

I just checked the advice leaflet I was given when it was out in and it says bleeding can continue for 3-6 MONTHS 😣I think I’m going to have to go back to the GP and talk about options for getting it removed.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 11/03/2023 16:19

I tried mirena in my 30s for contraception and two months after putting it in, had it out as I had bled every day.

I wanted to be able to have sex without contraception, but we didn't end up having sex once with it in.

ImANameChanger01 · 11/03/2023 16:28

I had it years ago and bled for months, so had it removed.
Tried it again a few years later and had light bleeding for 3 months and then no issues at all (4 years so far). If you can, try and persevere for a bit longer and then if no change, I’d have it removed

JudyBlumesBlubber · 11/03/2023 16:28

I am overwhelmed to read of similar issues. Why isn’t this openly acknowledged rather than euphemisms like occasional spotting? I don’t know how long I can last like this.
@Moredarkchocolateplease that’s exactly it. Is it the best form of contraception purely because you just can’t face sex with it in?!

Can I ask if you bleed at all now?
I think 3 months is my limit..

lmnabc · 11/03/2023 16:33

Three months is the usual time it's supposed to take for irregular bleeding to settle.

TinaTotal · 11/03/2023 16:36

I was told to expect chaotic bleeding for up to 6 months (as she was inserting it, no mention of this when I agreed to have it at previous appointment)
I bled every day for 7 months and had to beg for it to be removed.

twinteenwrangler · 11/03/2023 16:49

To offer a slightly more positive view my spotting (it was light but pretty constant) did stop after 3 months and I've had no bleeding ever since (on my third mirena now). Would wearing period pants help as an alternative to pads? They are all my daughters wear and seem brilliant.

Well it’s constant rather than irregular. I’d cope with irregular..

Period pants are a good call actually!

But I take your point @lmnabc and thank you.

Only the very occasional month and that is light spotting for a day, if that.

Don’t blame 3 months for being your limit, it is horrible, but I’m glad I got through the horrible early days as not having heavy/any bleeding has changed my life.

Angelik · 11/03/2023 19:09

Bled for for 5 mnths out of 6 last year. Got heavier and heavier. Turns out it was in wrong place. Had it removed. Another one put in 8 weeks ago and bleeding getting less as in 9 days of spotting in last 3 weeks. But I've really had enough. Had enough generally actually.

Fedupofchangingusernames · 11/03/2023 19:21

First up, OP and others who are experiencing this constant bleeding, I'm so sorry you're having to put up with this.

I'm so glad I came across this post. GP is trying to push me down the Mirena coil route for my endometriosis.

I was already dubious about it from a few friends who had issues with it but reading this has confirmed that it's not a route I want to go down.

Being a woman is truly shit.

Schmutter · 11/03/2023 19:25

I had one fitted in Jan as part of my HRT, to stop my awful menopausal bleeding.

Whilst my flooding/clots has stopped and I feel miles better, I am still experiencing some bleeding. I’ll go a few days with nothing, then it will start again. It’s really very light, so I can cope with it easily but I want none whatsoever please.

MrsBlondie · 11/03/2023 19:27

I had the same. Constant spotting/bleeding for months. Had to push and push and finally got it removed. Turned out it had moved and wasn't in correctly. So good job the bleeding stopped sex as it wouldn't have worked as contraception due to the move!

I have a Cooper one now and it's fine

Bumblbeestungmyknee · 11/03/2023 19:29

Endometriosis & fibroids.
I had it fitted for heavy, but regular, periods. I gained horrendous weight, felt ill and pretty much bled daily.

I kept going back to the nurse asking for it to be removed but she kept fobbing me off saying ‘just give it a bit more time to settle’. I visited her at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months…it was horrendous. By 11 months they finally agreed to remove it but had no appointments for another 3 months so I presented myself at the local SH clinic and begged them to take it out. Thankfully they did. I returned to my old size and my old self really quickly.

Gynae then made me take P.O.P and insisted I take it for 6 months minimum. By 4&1/2 months I was so anaemic I could barely function and had only had 8 days free of heavy bleeding in the whole time. Horrendous.

JudyBlumesBlubber · 21/03/2023 21:53

I just thought I’d come back to the thread to say that the originally frustrated post must have been a good luck charm because everything sorted itself out that very weekend!
I’m now not bleeding at all and feel well in myself. So the advice to wait a bit longer was ultimately good for me.
Of course that might change but so far so good.

That’s really good to hear @JudyBlumesBlubber Long may it last! Im
hanging on in there a bit longer too and hoping it all settles down.

ImANameChanger01 · 25/03/2023 19:57

Great news @JudyBlumesBlubber

youmustbemad · 25/03/2023 20:03

As a counterpoint to all the women who had problems, I have had mine for 4.5 years (due to replace it this summer) and basically after the first 5 or 6 months my bleeding got less and less every month, to the point that I often have nothing at all, but max is slight spotting, not even enough to stain my knickers. I don't even need a liner. It's amazing. So it does work incredibly well for some women. I'm definitely getting another one.

Mumma · 25/03/2023 20:18

It takes about 6 months to settle. I bled alot and then nothing for 4 years!
