Superdrug is selling testosterone

So I noticed Superdrug are selling testosterone for women. Its all about libido, and you have to fill in an online form for their online doctor. £18 for 3 satchets which is a months supply I think.

My GP say she can't prescribe me testosterone (and I have checked the local formulary for my area and she is right) but she also won't refer me to a local consultant (plus there is an 18 month wait anyway).

Thinking of trying the Superdrug route - anyone had testosterone from there without the help of their GP? Doesn't look like you need a prescription but I am not sure.

I've had an email from boots all about menopause; I think pharmacies are going to really get on this bandwaggon.

I actually had a medichecks blood tests via Superdrug's today and hadn't realised how much their nurses can do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start a meno service.

It sounds a bit too easy though and you're supposed to be tested a while after starting?

It's not even licensed for women here apart from issues with libido and after oestrogen has been maximised?

WarriorN · 15/11/2022 17:56

Looks like you buy a test kit too for £50

You aren't supposed to use testosterone unless you are already on HRT . Drs would want you on HRT first before adding testosterone as @WarriorN says.

It isn't 'risk free' either and has to be used in very minute amounts with blood tests now and then.

Northernlass99 · 18/11/2022 14:31

Yes seems too easy. The questionnaire does ask if you are already on HRT etc. But I would be worried about doing it without regular tests.

On the other hand I’m looking at about £500 by the time you have a private consultation, private blood tests and private prescription!

Mmm I'm tempted. Has anyone bought it from Superdrug and used it?

Pastryapronsucks · 04/05/2023 17:42

Well I am going for it

UnaOfStormhold · 04/05/2023 17:46

I requested it but was refused because I ticked the box to say I do competitive sports (as in local runs)

Perime · 04/05/2023 17:48

What regular test are required for being on testosterone?

WarriorN · 04/05/2023 21:49

Testosterone test a few weeks/ months after testing. Though my Gp did one before too.

Littlepumpkinpie · 05/05/2023 18:26

Would love know if anyone has been successful in obtaining the testosterone from super drug without doing the test they sell beforehand.

WarriorN · 07/05/2023 09:13

The test is important imo; my Gp always does testosterone and FAI before allowing a woman to try testosterone. It was useful as it showed that I was too low in free and borderline low FAI. Awaiting 3 month follow up test. Testosterone has been very helpful imo. I'm lucky the Gp will prescribe- but I'd been on patches for over a year.

WarriorN · 07/05/2023 09:13

Will also show if you're absorbing

AthenaWhite · 07/05/2023 09:22

What is FAI?

WarriorN · 07/05/2023 09:55

www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk/our-services/services-we-offer/pathology/tests-and-investigations/free-androgen-index-fai/

They test sex binding globulin hormone and testosterone and work out the FAI.

WarriorN · 07/05/2023 09:56

Sex hormone binding globulin !

GreenDressy · 07/05/2023 10:01

When I first started HRT I went to a private specialist who prescribed testosterone. It smelled gorgeous 😂
It did have some effect and I felt good using it. However...my chin and leg hairs took on a life of their own, like they'd been fed some super fertiliser and I had to stop before I ended up with a full beard.
I miss the lovely smell though.

WarriorN · 07/05/2023 10:29

Not everyone needs testosterone- I've not had that issue. It's helped the things that I was really struggling with.

Some women just need to get the oestrogen level right for them.,

I also think I've benefited from being on more Utrogestan and continuously. But that changed over time; it first I couldn't tolerate it. (There was a webinar with Nick Panay about body identical progesterone recently if anyone is interested. Can also help flushes and joint issues.)

Barbarbarf · 07/05/2023 10:32

I'm currently taking a low dose of T for fertility related reasons. Definitely get a blood test and see an endo first..my friend took it for months for IVF and her hair started falling out and all sorts. Needs to be delicately managed

Somanycats · 07/05/2023 10:33

This is great news. And we really do need to stop thinking of GPS as a gateway to healthcare and especially prescriptions. That stopped working several years ago for many people.

moomoogalicious · 07/05/2023 10:45

I've ordered without the test. Just did the questionnaire

I have ordered testosterone from Superdrug as my community gynae clinic had a 16 week wait list. I tried to order without the blood test but got rejected. Reapplied for the blood test - was super easy to do - then after 24 hours the results were back and I could order the Testogel. It arrived the next day! I'm on day four and waiting to feel rampant any moment 😁

BloodyInternetWeirdos · 08/05/2023 00:00

Let us know how it goes! @lanawinters Although I’m nervous to try it as I’m afraid I’d have the same issue as @GreenDressy I have to wax my upper lip weekly as it is!

WarriorN · 09/05/2023 11:44

Definitely get test afterwards to check - mine is slightly out of range now! I can't believe how high it's gone from so low. Zero negative side effects. So I'm going to alternating days.

My oestrogen has gone much higher than ever before too. Don't understand that- though I started adding patch up very upper leg rather than tummy. But happy with it!

WarriorN · 09/05/2023 11:56

Free testosterone went from 1 to 25. With the calculations it's now 2.2, needs to be below 1.7. That's testogel using 0.3 ml daily.
