For a couple of months I’ve started to get a burning sensation on my face when I drink alcohol, and my face goes red. Anyone else ?

Just me then ?

No I do too. I can't drink red wine anymore at all as I get really red and get hives. But even white wine/champagne/rose make my fave burn up.

KangarooKenny · 22/10/2022 08:03

I’d had half a glass last night, and it actually felt like there was a flame in front of my forehead. I suppose it’s time to give it up then !

Get one of those fans you wear round your neck, switch it on, then have a drink!

Flowersintheattic57 · 22/10/2022 08:10

I had that, also with tea or any hot drink. Felt like a volcano walking round in my pants! Thankfully it does ease off, after several years for me, but I’ve not enjoyed wine so much since. It’s like it always has a slightly metallic taste now.
On the plus side, I am not so people pleasing and have learned to say ‘that doesn’t work for me’ and give zero fucks.

KangarooKenny · 22/10/2022 08:16

Last night was the first time I’ve drunk in weeks, so it wouldn’t be a problem to give it up, it’s just nice to be able to have the odd drink without looking like a beetroot.

Yes, like bad sunburn! Wine is worse that spirits for me.

Dragonfly97 · 22/10/2022 08:49

It could be Rosacea if it's just your face? Alcohol and spicy food can cause flare ups.

RoseOud · 22/10/2022 08:56

I was like this with my favourite tipple, Prosecco.

After two glasses, I looked like I had sunburn on my cheeks and my heart would beat harder. I tried to get through it because I loved the Prosecco so much, but in the end, I had to give it up. It made me feel rotten.
I looked up about it and found that wine contains sulphites which can trigger a reaction. Clear drinks like gin, vodka or white rum and certain lagers don't contain sulphites.
White rum is my drink choice now and I don't have that problem anymore.
Hope this helps.
Smile

KangarooKenny · 22/10/2022 08:59

Thanks for that, Prosecco is my favourite too. And thinking about it, it didn’t happen when I had a can of lager.
I don’t drink spirits.

I always had it with red wine so stopped drinking it, but since I was 40 it's started happening with white wine, tea, coffee, or even stress.

With white wine, it lessens if I take an antihistamine before drinking.

tigger1001 · 22/10/2022 09:05

I have rosacea and wine, for me is the biggest culprit- stopped drinking it a few years ago. Other alcohol can cause me a flare up, but it depends on other factors and it's not quite as bad.

My kind of thinking.

I get this! I've read it's some kind of syndrome?

neveradullmoment99 · 22/10/2022 09:16

Alcohol flush syndrome. Sometimes I get it and sometimes not. It can be with any alcohol. It feels like sunburn. I get patches of red all over my face.

Alcohol is a toxin. Your body is telling you to stop, listen to it.

Fififizz · 22/10/2022 16:19

Yes, this was me. Turned out to be rosacea. I ditched the vino but spicy foods, hot drinks, steam rooms etc are also problematic for me too.

CourtneeLuv · 22/10/2022 16:21

I've developed this over the last few years. I rarely drink now but when I do, my face gets hot and I get really red cheeks. I never associated it with menopause before though.

YukoandHiro · 22/10/2022 17:06

I think I'm just entering perimenopause and this is happening to me too. I keep forgetting until it's too late. Plus itchy legs. It's so annoying, I love glass of wine

Yes! Once I had a different wine to what I usually drank, in a theatre and once I got home my thighs were burning up and itching really badly. That only happened once though.

Well yes, think we are aware of this🙄

nooboonoo · 23/10/2022 20:49

People are not aware of it though. Drinking alcohol is so deeply culturally ingrained in us that we often don't question it - until things start to go wrong. What other thing do we consume that makes us feel so bad afterwards - hangovers, guilt, shame, embarrassment, affects our health, skin, hair, eyesight etc., yet we continue to consume it?
I'm not judging anyone who drinks. It's for everyone to make their own decisions over. I'm just pointing out that if it's affecting you negatively in any way, whatever that is, to question it and not feel pressured to continue drinking either.

KangarooKenny · 23/10/2022 21:42

I don’t feel pressured to drink, I just like the occasional glass of Prosecco, like on birthdays and at Xmas. Looks like that small pleasure might have to go too.

neveradullmoment99 · 23/10/2022 22:12

I dont actually drink very much either as I don't like it. I have a bailey's or a glass of wine but rarely.
