How did your periods stop?

Allinadaystwerk · 24/05/2020 17:45

I'm 50 and until April my periods were like clockwork. Only change was in length of time from average 6 days to 4 and from a 28 day cycle to 21 over the last year. But I never missed a month. I am now 28 days late. Did anyone elses periods just stop like that when going through menopause? I thought they would fade out gradually and that I would have other symptoms like hot flushes etc. Oh I have also gained about 3 very stubborn lbs around my middle. Menopause or something else?

Hi there. I'm 51 and I have just missed 3 periods. My periods have been like clockwork right up until now. I was thinking wow that might be it just like that, however, I woke up this morning with the start of a very painful period. Really sore boobs and crushing lower abdominal pain which is much worse than I've had before. Like you, I have also got this sudden chunky midriff which I've never had before. Feel very bloated too. You never know though, I have heard some women say theirs just stopped and that was that. This could be the case for you. It would be great to hear from others on how their periods finally stopped.

Nsky · 24/05/2020 21:06

2 very close together, then stopped, full on hot flushes aug 2007 , started at 45.
Lasted 13 years

ProperVexed · 24/05/2020 21:13

13 years?. Bloody hell. I'm dying of the night sweats here...and have been for 5 months or so. If it carries on for 13 years I will be a wreck...more of a wreck...a shadow of my former self....

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 21:13

Loads of hot flushes and flooding for years and then a gradual slowing down, three years now of nothing for ten months and then a period just when I think they have stopped Hmm

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 21:14

Oh and it started 11 years ago now.

fallfallfall · 24/05/2020 21:19

My periods just spaced out more and more, every 3 weeks went to 5 then 8 then 12 till nothing for a year, then one then nothing ever. Mild hot flushes and night sweats luckily only a few times.
That peri menopause stage really seemed to drag out. Great once done though.

pigoons · 24/05/2020 21:31

OP could've written your post myself. Just turned 50 - periods regular as clockwork but became more frequent over last year - about 21 days apart. Then suddenly no period in March until day 40 but April period bang on time again ...

The thing I am struggling with is huge amount of bloating / water retention - I look like I am 5 months pregnant for 5 days or so before my period and feel grim. Have just bought some menopace tablets in desperation ...

Thisbastardcomputer · 24/05/2020 21:34

Stopped dead at 46, never had another, night sweats and generally feeling shite for quite a long time. Prior to them stopping I had terrible problems with flooding, 2 superplus tampons and a thick sanitary towel and I could manage a 2 hour meeting, not fun.

StrawberryJam200 · 24/05/2020 21:39

You might like to look at the threads on menstrual cycle in pandemic and another one about night sweats suddenly vanishing....

It might not be anything to do with menopause!

There's quite a few articles on this around if you google.

StrawberryJam200 · 24/05/2020 21:40

Could the weight gain be due to lockdown OP?

picklemewalnuts · 24/05/2020 21:40

It's all a bit random. Stopping and starting, heavier or shorter or longer or lighter... more frequent until I skip one...

Then suddenly I skipped about four, then about six. I made it to 10 months, then had a period. So the countdown started again.

I'd say, expect anything and you won't be surprised.

TheSultanofPingu · 24/05/2020 21:44

I'm 50 and my periods have been all over the place for a couple of years now. Gaps of 3 or 4 months followed by a really heavy period, then regular as clockwork for a few months. My last period was early February. Really hoping that this is it, but concerned I'm due another heavy one.
Hot flushes and night sweats started a couple of months ago.
I don't like it.

Allinadaystwerk · 24/05/2020 22:45

Wow what a mixed bag! I dread the thought of 10+ years of slugging through menopause 😖
What are menopace tablets? I give them a google. Will also look at thread about mental cycle in pandemic if I can find it.. intrigued about that.
As for the extra weight i dont think lockdown as helped. But I feel so bloated.
No other symptoms though. I dont know it's all a bit confusing.
Thanks for the replies. I'm not great on finding old threads so if anyone has any links I'd be much obliged

My friends first response was might you be pregnant Shock

I'm 41 so I've gone through this a bit earlier than is usual.

Mine slowed down to begin with. So from about age 36 they started spacing out to 5/6/7 weeks between periods. Then went to only 4 periods a year for 3 years. Then they just stopped when I was 40.

I've experienced the delights of stubborn weight gain and bloating, occasional night sweats, insomnia, loss of volume in my breasts, brain fog, and I swear my face aged about 10 years in a year ConfusedSad not really had any hot flushes though, maybe those are next?

LizB62A · 24/05/2020 22:50

Mine got much heavier before they stopped - after lots of investigation that didn't uncover any sinister reason why the flooding was happening, a sympathetic GP let me go back on the pill for another year and when I stopped taking it again, no more periods.

The previous GP had refused to let me got back on the pill as I was "too old" even though I'd only stopped taking it less than a year before

PickAChew · 24/05/2020 22:53

Mine got closer together, then forth er apart and lighter, then I went 6 month, then almost a year...

And I'm still not convinced I'm entirely done. Last one was Christmas and I think I have one on the way, this month.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 24/05/2020 23:06

I'm 46 and having a similar experience. Shorter cycles-I've gone from 28/29 days to 25 now and only 3-4 day periods. The stubborn midriff fat has come on in the past year. I'm not overweight, just got a thicker middle!

My friend's periods stopped suddenly at 47 and that was it for her, no other menopausal symptoms (except for a tubbier midriff as well Grin). I hope I'm similar.

Allinadaystwerk · 24/05/2020 23:21

I just read the other pandemic period threads. How weird! All these women with missed or irregular cycles all of a sudden 🙃😮
The thick midriff is quite depressing. I find myself looking at it and thinking ewww you look like a middle aged woman...which of course I am 😆
But my mind needs to catch up with my age I guess

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 24/05/2020 23:24

Spanx are our friends Grin

PickAChew · 24/05/2020 23:51

Spanx are too bloody hot and itchy!

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 23:53

The night sweats and hot flushes only lasted a year or two for me.
I haven't had hrt, the Gp didn't offer it and I'd decided not to bother. My periods went to one or two days long then I had a couple of two week long ones and, touch wood, nothing since...seven months and counting,

Allinadaystwerk · 25/05/2020 00:22

Wonder whether to talk to gp to see if I can get confirmation that i am menopausal? If not then I'd like to know what else it could be. Have others found gps willing to help?

OP posts:
patchysmum · 25/05/2020 00:55

I got much heavier periods for the last year or so with lots of clots. Then they just stopped at 54.Never had any hot flushes or night sweats

VanGoghsDog · 25/05/2020 00:58

Worth doing a pregnancy test of course.....

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 25/05/2020 00:59

I went 73 days in February between periods. Then it goes back to 30-35 days. Then I have one 10 days later Angry. I’ll be bloody glad when they stop tbh.
