How did your periods stop?

I'm 50 and until April my periods were like clockwork. Only change was in length of time from average 6 days to 4 and from a 28 day cycle to 21 over the last year. But I never missed a month. I am now 28 days late. Did anyone elses periods just stop like that when going through menopause? I thought they would fade out gradually and that I would have other symptoms like hot flushes etc. Oh I have also gained about 3 very stubborn lbs around my middle. Menopause or something else?

I had a few months of one period every other month then a few months of one every couple of weeks then back to normal for a while then... nothing. Occasional hot flush but nothing stunning other than it is harder to lose weight

Mine became more frequent for a year or so (every 18 to 20 days) but they were much lighter. And then I had none for six months. Then they came back, were quite regular and very much like my previous 'normal' for a few months. Then they just stopped. That was about a year and a half ago. I'm 53.

Interesting how different everyone's experience is. I recall periods starting being more uniform as in once they started that was it kinda thing

Oh, and no hot flushes. Just a very hot temper!

My periods were regular and 6 or 7 days until I got to 51. Then periods got so heavy. Only lasted for 4 days but first two days blood was literally squirting out of me. I was using super super plus tampons and night time towel and having to change every half an hour. I became anemic and working as a teacher was almost impossible. GP gave me transanemic acid tablets which helped I tiny bit. This went on for 2 years. Then I started missing an odd period, only for following one to be even worse. Over next year they gradually got a bit lighter and I started missing more periods. I think I had 7 that year. This is when hot flushes started and I started to become forgetful. I was also a bit weepy for no reason. Following year they were lighter again and only lasted 2 or 3 days. I put on weight around my waist. After 6 months I was only having a period every 3 or 4 months. I went off sex. Vaginal dryness and got tired more easily. Then periods just stopped. I put on more weight. I tried hrt but put on more weight so GP said I could not have any. I am now 58. I still get hot flushes and am forgetful. Sometimes I still feel weepy. If I sit down in afternoon I sometimes nod off. I don't sleep at night
and I try to avoid sex as much as I can. I don't know why DH puts up with me. I am often either grumpy or tearful. I just don't know how many more years I will feel like this.

One of my friends had no periods for 10 months and then got pregnant at 47. Her two children were 21 and 19. She was shocked but was going to go ahead and have baby, but she miscarried at 15 weeks.

Be very careful not to get pregnant, as when my friend got pregnant her GP said her hormones were having a last hurrah.

Mine were very regular - always every 28 days. When I was 48 they just stopped. 18 months later, I had one more completely normal period. Then nothing since. I am almost 52 now.

Yes to huge clots here as well.

Ginger minced, 1 teasp in boiling water helps bloating, also press gently on tummy button, and move in clock work direction.
Repeat often if needed
I had extreme bloating up to 20 days s month.
The oestrogen upsets the bile, and therefore does not aid digestion

Bloody hell @caringcarer that has scared the life out of me!
The thought of being pregnant is even more terrifying. Ginger tea and a Belly rub sounds great though.
We dont half have it tough us ladiesSad

111 days since my last period - maybe this is it? I've just turned 48 & last year I had of 75+ day cycle.

The few periods I have had in the last year have been scanty & light.

Prior to that they were every 12-21 days, heavy & almost flooding etc.

Strangely, I am not having any symptoms eg hot flushes.

I do wonder if I should go to the GP for HRT, but I thought if you were under 50 you had to use HRT which gives a monthly bleed.

And I cannot face more bloody periods, having started age 10!!

nicslackey · 29/06/2020 23:59

Had a period as usual in January, skipped February ( and I never skipped) March as usual and nothing since, just over 4 years ago. No hot flushes etc. That is not to say I have not had other issues but just not sure if they were related. Very painful arthritis set in at the same time and intermittent hand and arm itching. Like drawing blood itching.

I skipped a period in October and everything went back to normal then last month two weeks after period I had a couple days spotting which stopped and now late again, so I’m guessing it’s started. I’m 49 some of my weight gain I’m blaming on lockdown but I do feel very large and everything is way too tight now.

The same here! I am glad to read this. I am 48 soon and haven’t had a period for months now. When I do get one it’s very light and short. Prior to this I had very heavy irregular periods for a couple of years. I am worried it seems early for my periods to stop but from reading this board it seems 47 isn’t too unusual. I was debating going to the doctor but I don’t have other symptoms so not sure its necessary.
